A little bit of debate about the likes of Wojo and Varcoe recently has got me thinking who will be in the best 22 come September. Anyway I will have dip.

FF. Chapman. Hawkins. Stokes

HF. Bartel Pods. Johnson

C. Bundy. Corey. Duncan

HB. Enright. Taylor. Mackie

FB Scarlett. Lonergan. J. Hunt

R West. Kelly. Selwood

I/C Stephenson, Wojcinski, T.Hunt, Varcoe

Emg: Murdoch, Guthrie, Smedts

Varcoe and Wojak have already been cause for considerable debate. How bad is Stephensons hand? Will he be back?

I personally feel extremely conflicted about leaving out Smedts and to a lesser extent Guthrie. They Probably get Wojak and Varcoes spots depending on how things play out over the next month.

No complaints here :thumbsu:

Agree with your team.
Just sucks when our best 22 SHOULD have Vardy and Menzel in it (and possibly Simpson) :(
Bartel needs a big finals series... had a pretty ordinary year so far by his standards.
Ive said it for a while now if we go deep into the finals it will be on the back of 4 or so players, I really think it comes down to Hawkins right now... if he monsters some games (which knowing his finals record hes probably odds on to do) then we are a BIG chance.....

I also did say in another thread that Varcoe will play against the Swans, seems the MC are agreeing with me now :D

It all depends on injuries and who is available. But if most with injuries are back I reckon -

FF. Chapman. Hawkins. Stokes

HF. Bartel Pods. Johnson

C. Bundy. Corey. Duncan

HB. Enright. Taylor. Mackie

FB Scarlett. Lonergan. J. Hunt

R West. Kelly. Selwood

I/C Smedts, Guthrie, T.Hunt, Varcoe

Emg: Murdoch, Wojcinski.

Best 22:
B: Scarlett Lonergan Enright
HB: Mackie Taylor Poodle
C: Duncan Kelly Bartel
HF: SJ JPod Chapman
F: Stokes Hawk Bundy
R: West Selwood Corey
Int: Stephenson Guthrie/JHunt Wojo/Motlop Varcoe (sub)

Emg: JHunt Wojo Smedts

Varcoe is definitely best 22 and the signs are they will play him, presumably as the sub. Smedts drops out, will be super but not physically ready for finals yet. I have bracketed the guys who are in competition and the green I would pick. Dropping Josh is a hard decision and in reality probably won't happen but I feel Guthrie is best 22 now. He and Smedts and to a lesser degree Motlop are the ones who are competing to stay in, Duncan Bundy and Poodle are certain starters. There's an argument that with Varcoe you may not need both Wojo and Motlop and one could drop out. I feel we have to have two ruckmen as Walker's not an adequate pinch hitter and West can't ruck the entire game by himself throughout finals.

A fully match fit Trav certainly is in our best 22. However that's a big call when he hasn’t hit the field yet after such an extended injury interrupted preparation. Hope you're on the money.

I was quite taken with the Tom Lonergan comment on our website re Trav that “we can’t expect too much this year” The next few weeks will be intriguing.

Personally I think Trav must play and it's a risk worth taking. My side though is more based on CS comments on Monday about what he and the assistants think which indicates to me it's a certainty he plays finals if the vfl goes well.

The calls about Josh vs Guthrie are harder ones, and I'm not sure which way to go. Getting Varcoe in was a much easier call.

A hell of a lot is expected from TV in these threads.

The anti-Varcoe brigade will be rubbing their hands together at the thought. Lets see how he pulls up first before selecting him as best 22 in 2012.

I am a little sceptical to be honest.

Best case scenario he certainly is. But you are right we need to wait and see. Doubt he will be be worse than Motlop ^.^

Swap Smedts for Wojo and Stephensen for Motlop(Depending on matchups) and it's spot on.

J Hunt is way in front of guthrie. no doubt about it.

This.

And what's with listing our best 22 starting with the forwards.... I just can't read it that way!

Sorry just the way it came out lol. Didn't think much about the layout.

There seems to be a lot who wouldn't worry about West going in solo. What if he gets injured early in a game? We would have throw Taylor or even worse Hawkins in there. Hmm maybe we could just put Jimmy in ;)

No Christenson (proven finals campaigner) or Motlop (X factor)?

Bundy = Christensen so yes he's in. Motlop has been useless for a month now unless he can change that soon Varcoe is likely a better option IMO.

I agree with motlop.
I like him, think he will be a good player for us but I was howled down at work recently for saying I hope he gets dropped.
Hes started to become a little lazy and Im sick of seeing him try a toe poke out of a pack when putting his head over the ball and WINNING it is required... crap like that comes undone in finals.

I like PO's side, except I think Smedts is a lock for our best team - not purely based on form, but I think he is earmarked for big things and I think they'll take every opportunity to get games into him, especially finals. Perhaps in place of Stephenson, I am happy with West as a lone ruck although it is obviously a risk.

I would like to see Guthrie in the team for finals, ahead of J Hunt. The one thing in Hunt's favour is his kicking, on that basis it is always reassuring to see his name on the team sheet, but finals experience aside I think Guthrie has him covered. Guthrie also offers a bit more flexibility.

Motlop and Varcoe is an interesting discussion. I tend to think it'll be one or the other due to limited spaces, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them in the same team depending on injuries. Varcoe in could really improve Motlop as his pressure and quick ball release could create opportunities for Motlop to break away from stoppages, and Motlop is dangerous in space. Unfortunately I can't really see a place for Wojo in the side.
