If we had no injuries what would our best 22 be?? Mine would be...

FB: C.Brown S.Gilham B.Guerra
HB: R.Ladson T.Croad G.Birchall
C: J.Lewis S.Mitchell C.Bateman
HF: M.Osborne L.Franklin S.Crawford
FF: C.Rioli J.Roughead M.Williams
R: R.Campbell L.Hodge B.Sewell
I: S.Taylor C.Young X.Ellis
S.Dew

So no room for B.McGlyn, T.Tuck, J.Morton, T.Murphy, T.Clarke, T.Boyle

I agree with your 18. I think that the questions are whether Benny McGlynn and Morton might get in before Clinty - and maybe even Xman. The other guy who looked like he was best 22 was Musto but its hard to compare him.

I find it very interesting that so many posters here exclude Young and some also Ellis. When last was either not selected, so clearly both are considre part of our best 22 by the match committee.

Agree 100% with your team.

No arguments here, although I would like to see Boyle in the team, ahead of Dew.

Young in form is in, but right now I wouldn't have him there. He is really being shown up in 1 on 1 contests. As an outside player he doesn't need to be able to win the hard ball in a pack, but he needs to be able to break even in a 1 on 1 with his direct opponent, and at the moment he isn't, and sides have recognised that and are making sure his opponent stays on him. I'd play Tuck ahead of him (even though he's a different sort of player) or even Morton.

I personally wouldn't have Dew in there either. His current lack of run and pace is too easily exploited by his opponents even if he is is great when we have the ball.

If McGlynn can get back to his form of mid last year he's in the mix with Tuck and Morton, but he was terrible before his suspension this year, you can't afford turnovers in AFL these days.

No questions about Ellis in the side, he's a gun.

I like Boyler too, but I'd rather play an extra mid-fielder than a third tall forward, particularly while Williams is in the side.

Gilham has been very shaky when isolated, and again, teams know this and are trying to exploit it. There isn't anyone better at the moment though.

I think that is a pretty close read of where we are at at the minute.

In the future/perhaps finals could see Dew and Guerra fighting over the one spot at half back. both great kicks but imo play a similar role and i'm not sure we need two in the side. If Dewy gets fully fit he's clearly the better player.

Next in line Travis Tuck his form before injury put him ahead of Young and Ellis but is now just behind.

Next couple Moreton (needs to work on his kicking but has shown enough) Clark we all know what he brings. Whitecross not perhaps this year but look a good one.

Renouth was happy with his efforts a handy back up atm. could step up next year

Thorp. Yet to prove himself. Still need to give him time. Let him get fit. Has all the talent just needs to get on the park

tuck, young and ellis are three very different players for my mind.

tuck is a genuine midfielder who can find his own ball.

young is a slight man who waits for the ball to come to him on the wings/flanks.

and ellis is a cool head in defence, his ability to make decisions under pressure isnt dissimilar to that of luke hodge. he will be a very important player for us. i know he has been maligned on this hawthorn board, but for barely a 3rd year footballer, he plays far beyond his years and makes better decisions than many of his peers in the defence/midfield at a much tenderer age.

he is a gem.

so basically, ellis is an automatic inclusion, and at this stage yes, i would easily have tuck over young.

Brown, Campbell, Guerra
Gilham, Croad, Ladson
Birchall, Mitchell, Bateman
Lewis, Roughead, Rioli
Osborne, Franklin, Williams
Taylor, Hodge, Sewell
Bailey, Crawford, Dew, Ellis

Very good selections benji. :thumbsu: Only question mark in my mind could potentially be Clinton's selection.

The selection of Young over the rest of these blokes really depends on the team we are versing.

For example, against Sydney this week I would far prefer Tuck or McGlynn over Young if given the option. It's just that Young tends to bomb it long inside 50 and Sydney are a disciplined side who get numbers back and generally have a rock-solid backline. Clinton also tends to play his best footy when he roams down HBF/wing freely, and I feel Sydney would certainly limit his space and shut him down thus heavily limiting his impact on the game. Sydney are an extremely physical side and I am far more confident Tuck and McGlynn could find the hard ball and win the contested footy compared to Young which is a necessity against the Swannies.

Against the Kangaroos or Crows in particular I would prefer Tim Clarke over Young as he is a good match up for a shutdown role on Brent Harvey (who is a fantastic player and always kills us) or Andrew McLeod (who Clarke has done well on in the past) as Macca is extremely damaging and provides great drive from HBF.

Tim Boyle is handy as a decoy, but can certainly step up on his day, which he showed last year on several occasions. Certainly a player who has the potential to kick a bag if Buddy and/or Roughy can't fire. Can certainly help to stretch opposition defenses and give them something else to think about.

Against a side with plenty of tall forwards (possibly Essendon with Lloyd/Lucas/Gumbelton/Neagle if all were fit and firing) I feel Tom Murphy could be fairly important. Croad is an awesome defender and I am a big fan of Gilham, but I have grown to appreciate Murphy's role in the team. Certainly provides some assistance down back especially for Gilham. Solid contributor and handy defender with a good kick and mark.

Morton is similar to Young, although I feel he can become an extremely important player in the future. Has been superb since his inclusion to the seniors and looks as though he will hold down his spot. Still very young with much improvement but the signs are really good.

Not having a go at Youngy here, I just feel that from the 22 you listed Young is really the only questionable player ATM (possibly Dew if his hammy keeps giving him trouble and limits his kicking) and against certain opposition Tuck/McGlynn/Morton/Clarke/Boyle/Murphy etc. could be of more value to our side than Clinton.

Agreed Dew's kicking is limited at the moment but he isn't wasting it, its just that he is not able to kick 60m. Still hits his target on the tit, just that it might travel 30 or 40 rather than 50 - 60.

Definitely in our best 22!

No room for Stokesy, Bailey, Musto, Dowler, Thorp, Whitecross either.

Man that's 12 blokes that other clubs would happily have on their list.

Can't wait til we have a fit team!!!!

Almost forgot about Musto!! He looked great pre-season, hope he comes back bigger and better next season and works his way into our 22!!

If you think McGlynn was terrible before his suspension, I suggest you go back & watch the Collingwood game again. By no means was he terrible that day - in fact he stepped up to cover for Hodgey's injury.
I admit, he's not in the form he showed halfway through last year, but calling his form terrible is too harsh.
