MIGHTY MAGPIES
Hey guys, just wanted to get the opinions of the faithful on what they think is our best 24.

Ok so it’s the 18 on field, with a 6 man bench.

Fire away

SP

Why six man bench? Why not make it twenty five for the 4 man bench and three emergencies?

Anyway, I'll go with:

FF: L. Davis | C. Tarrant | S. Burns
HF: J. Fraser | A. Rocca | B. Caracella
C: A. Didak | N. Buckley | R. Lonie
HB: R. Cole | S Wakelin | S. Woewodin
FB: J. Clement |S. Prestigiacomo| C. Morrison
Foll: G Richards | P. Licuria | B. Johnson

INT:
B. Holland | N. Maxwell
T. Lockyer | C. Cloke

Emer:
S. O'Bree | T Walker | A. Iacobucci

Now that's only based on what we know now. Obviously the new draftees, or the young guys could suprise us, but that team looks pretty good to me.

no room for J.Cloke, even in the emergencies?
and why would iacobucci be more advanced than several other youngsters, namely the 2 younger shaws and even egan.
otherwise, this team picks itself due to poor depth.
for mine, change iacobucci with cloke1.

FB: B. Johnson Wakelin Cole
HB: R. Lonie Prestigiacomo Clement

HF: Caracella Rocca Fraser

R: Richards Licuria Burns

EM: R. Shaw T. Cloke Davidson

Almost exactly what i was thinking of, except a few minor tweaks.

Id move bucks to HFF, with caracella going to the pocket and leon going to the bench allowing holland to move into the rover possition and licca to take the centre. Im not sure if C2 has a spot in the side if the forward line already has Taz, Fraser, Pebbles and Bucks who are all 6'3" or taller. While Davidson who i think will take his spot is tall, he is quicker off the mark, not to mention i like the idea of a rotation of bucks to the middle to give johnson a spell, who moves to the wing to give lonie a spot on the bench allowing Davidson to goto the forward flank opposite Taz. I cant see any defence being able to man up on 2 fast leading forwards, the man mountain Anthony, while holding 2 awesome crumbing finishers in burns and caracella at the same time. Id also take R.Shaw over Obree, he has pace to add to the midfield, all he needs is confidence, i say put him on a tagging role on someone like cooney or gianciracusa in round 1, for atleast the start of the match dutchy can be an attacking midfielder... if westy is having a too greater impact, change it round move dutchy onto west and let shaw be the attacker. Thats just my 2 cents tho, feel free to critacise

Davidson is the smokey

What i believe is Collingwoods best team

FF: A. Didak | C. Tarrant | J. Fraser
HF: S. Burns | A. Rocca | C. Cloke
C: B. Caracella | N. Buckley | B. Johnson
HB: C. Morrison | S Wakelin | N. Maxwell

INT:
B. Holland | R. Lonie
T. Lockyer | J. Cloke

Pretty good team ya got there. Problem seems to be whether Collingwood have the back up in order to help if they were to suffer from injuries

Well, first, we're talking Best 22, and I don't think Cloke will fit into that with the health of Wakes and Presti and the emergence of Maxwell.

Second, Iacobucci is listed there because it always seems that our late draft picks are guys who're ready to play, and generally get game time, and Iacobucci sounds like he's in that group, as he's got an AFL ready body, whereas Egan and Rusling need to work on their bodies. Our late picks usually play that year, like Rowe, Lokan and Johnson.

Maybe I did leave out the Shaws, and maybe I did leave out Egan, but from what we know now, it's actually more likely that Iacobucci will get playing time what we've seen in the past.

Well thanx to every1 who posted their take on the best 24/25 for 05.

Most of the teams posted have been pretty close, only minor differences seperating the opinions of posters.

Heres my take on all things 05

B: Cole / Presti / Clement

HB: C.Morrison / Wakelin / Woewodin

C: Lonie / Licuria / Didak

HF: Taz / Rocca / Bucks

F: Burns / Fraser / Caracella

Followers: Richards / Holland / BJ

Interchange: Davidson / Lockyer / Davis / R.Shaw

Emg: Rowe / Walker / C.Cloke

So theres my take on all things 05 for the pies, and on paper its an awesome unit. A fast running, blanketting backline, finally adding some pace and skill to the midfield while keeping the hard bodies of Licuria and Holland in the middle. And IMO one of the top 3, if not the best forward structures in the league... How many defences can man up on so many stars?

Was also wondering the opinions of other posters here... who actaully has a backline good enough to keep our foward line down. The only one that comes to mind is Geelong, who may have trouble as it is, they might be able to hold Taz and Pebbles down with Scarlett and Harley, but who takes fraser, bucks burns and caracella?

B: Richard Cole ~ Simon Prestigiacomo ~ Shane Wakelin
HB: Shane Woewodin ~ James Clement ~ Chad Morrison
C: Tarkyn Lockyer ~ Scott Burns ~ Ben Johnson
HF: Alan Didak ~ Chris Tarrant ~ Blake Caracella
F: Leon Davis ~ Anthony Rocca ~ Josh Fraser
RUCK: Guy Richards ~ Nathan Buckley ~ Paul Licuria
INT: Nick Maxwell ~ Ryan Lonie ~ Brodie Holland ~ Julian Rowe
EMER: Shane O'Bree ~ Cameron Cloke ~ Dane Swan

My team is geared around future direction and ultimatley making some minor improvements to the side.

B : Cole - Presty - Wakelin
HB: Morrison - Walker - Clement
C: Lonie - Didak - B Johnson
HF: Caracella - A Rocca - Buckley
F : Frazer - Tarrant - Burns
Foll : Richards - Licuria - Woewodin
Inc : Holland - LDavis - Lockyer - C Cloke
Emer : J Cloke - Rowe - Maxwell - R Shaw
King - Obree - Lokan - Williams
JCloke to struggle as I tip Malthouse will look to Walker more and more as a second tall. Plenty of run through the wings and half back line to set up countless playes and some in and under types on the ball to get it out to them in Woey and Lica(dont think pace will be a huge factor next year)....Bucks to roam around centre wing and the 40 meter mark ditto Caracella. No favours for Caracella, if he does not perform Leon or CCloke straight up. Holland pinch hitting off the bench.

The magpie fans have got to realise that no matter much they hate O'Bree and Jason Cloke, they are Malthouse favourites and will start the season in the best 22 purely based on experience and good seasons of the past.

My team:

B:J.Clement; S.Wakelin; R.Cole
HB:B.Johnson; S.Prestigiacomo; R.Lonie
C:S.Woewodin; N.Buckley; T.Lockyer
HF:A.Didak; A.Rocca; B.Caracella
F:L.Davis; C.Tarrant; S.Burns
FOLL:J.Fraser; B.Holland; P.Licuria
INTER:J.Cloke; S.O'Bree; C.Morrison; G.Richards
EMERG:R.Shaw; M.Lokan; T.Walker

How can so many of you put Bucks in the middle? He is unfortuantly on his last legs, and we need to use him as either a roaming Forward flanker, or a sweeper... The reason 2 why i dont think he should be the sweeper is cause i think that that role should fall to woewodin... I still think that J.Cloke will have to prove himself... Obree may be there round 1, maybe round 2, will probs be moved to the bench at the start of round 3 and dropped by round 4

For what it's worth, the best 24 in 05 will hopefully evolve. May start out conservatively:

FB: Cole/ Wakelin/ JCloke
HB: Clement/ Presti/ CMorrison
c: Johnson/ Woewodin/ Lonie
HF: Tarrant/ Rocca/ Lockyer
FF: Burns/ Fraser/ Caracella(?)
Foll: Richards/ Buckley/ Licuria
Int: CCloke, Holland, Didak, Davis

(Buckley, Burns swap & rest; Woey is a sweeper - as is CMorrison and Rowe played that way too vs Hawthorn when Woey was thrown forward to follow the ball to great effect. He might follow it some more next year)

Through the season I'd imagine the best 20-odd would include Rowe covering from time to time
also RShaw for fast tagging roles
Davidson and HShaw for forward duties
Walker (possible CHB?) and Maxwell down back
And either King, Swan or Yakkabucci at Back Pocket to gradually allow Cole into the midfield, where BShaw also needs an occasional run as Buckley and Burns gradually wind down. Burns is a fine forward, onballer and started as a fantastic HBF, but can Buckley "see" himself as anywhere than burning brightly on the ball?
