You have to hand it to the list managers, they have created one of the best AFL defences from SFA.
We got Jordan Butts for pick 39 in the rookie draft.
We got Hinge for free as a delisted FA
We got Michaelanny as a father son.
We got Nick Murray as a delisted FA in the SSP.
We got Keane for nothing as a delisted FA.
We got Worrell for pick 28, which was an absolute gift as we lost McAsey for nothing.

That's pretty amazing to create that backline for next to nothing.

Yep, superb recruiting. Add in Laird as a rookie selection holding down the small defender role. And even our backup options were cheap.

If Bond ends up there, he was pick 50.

If Cumming goes back there, we got him as a free agent.

If Nankervis gets a game there, he was a PSD selection.

If Borlase plays, he was an international rookie.

The only player back there that cost any significant draft capital is Milera. And I guess Smith when he gets games.

Jack Hombsch needs credit here.

Yes great talent but the method is also important.

Its very cheap.

Only cost us one of Hayden Young, Caleb Serong or Kysaiah Pickett...

I recall being annoyed at us missing Dylan Stephens to Sydney:think:

Murray wasnt a delisted Free Agent as such. He was overlooked in two drafts so we invited him to train with us. We had a spot open so we were able to select him as SSP selection

Talia. Smith , Lever, Doedee and Michalanney go/went alright.

I guess what I usually look at is a) whether the player taken was actually the best option compared to the next best mid or tall forward and b) whether you could readily get a similar player later in the draft.

For example we took Darcy Fogarty at pick 12. Could we have readily taken a similar player in the later rounds or rookie picks? No. Was there a clearly better player available in a more valuable position slightly later in the draft? Not really.

Tom Doedee though. The next best available mid was Jade Gresham and later in the draft we had Sam Collins going at pick 55, Nathan Broad pick 67, and Blake Hardwick pick 44. Did we actually use that pick wisely?

I think Michalanney is a clear exception due to the father son rule. We only actually spent 3rd rounders on him.

Of course on the balance of things sometimes it pays off (for example Jake Lever over Kyle Langford) but most of the time it doesn't.

Smith as a half back isn't the sort of player I was referring to

Read an article the other day (can't find it now though) which said that we are the best team in the comp at defending opposition transition between the arcs. Our defence has definitely improved as well, but the work up the field has helped them out a bit.

I feel that team defence is a difference between this team and the 2017 one.

And why Richmond dismantled us.

Proves my long held opinion that spending first round picks on defenders is a waste
I think O'Sullivan will end up being a pretty good pick. He's an absolute gun. Just depends on the player - I don't think 'defender' is the relevant category. A 'stopper' type KPD like Butts, yeah probably rarely worth a first rounder unless they are best in the league type material.

Great thread. 👍
I've been thinking this for a while. This is where our recruitment team have really cashed in. They've built an awesome back line for penny's in terms of draft picks, which has allowed us to spend those on other acquisitions. Brilliant list management.

Laird was a rookie pick.
Milera our highest spend with a 1st rounder.

Butts is a product of the Crows development, the player he has become is nothing like the player he was when we drafted him. In his top age year he led the then NAB League intercept marking for most of the year and played quite a bit on the wing and half forward.
