Our defence is crap because...

The last post is very accurate. Our defence is crap because it is inexperienced AND our midfielders and forwards have no defensive skills. Players like Betts and Stevens get run off very easily

I thought Ratten & Co. had a terrible night on Thurs for multiple reasons:

#1 Jamison is 87 kilos. Playing on 110 kilo richo.........how is this beneficial at the moment for his development. He should be made to do what Leaigh Matthews did for Mal Michael when he arrived at the Lions. ‘Go into the gym & you won’t leave until your above 100 kilos’. Then we can have Jamo playing on the gorillas such as Richo.

#2 Setanta is NOT a ruckman – he shows promise as a key defender, & all teams need 3 medium-big sized defenders. I know we had no other options in the ruck against Richmond but please let him settle at FB/CHB.

#3 All summer Ratten has spoken about Waite and CHB ! why then do I peer up to the Punt Rd endhalf way thru the 2nd quarter & he’s playing at CHF? An absolute disgrace!
1. Jammo did a pretty good job on Richo while he was on him. The mistake that Ratten made was taking Jammo off Richo, not putting him on. Plus putting that kind of weight on that quickly would just make Jammo slow and increase the likelihood of him suffering OP.

2. Oh? So who were you planning for us to play as our backup ruckman with Hampson, Kruezer, Aisake and Ackland all injuried? Judd is pretty good but I don't think he can play in the ruck.

3. So he can't change his tactics to suit the flow of the game? We needed another forward target because Fev was getting swamped, and Waite wasn't doing much in defense anyway.

You call him an absolute disgrace?

You're a joke mate.

1. I agree Jamo played well, but is it any good for the team/himself if his opponent is BOG & having 10 shots on goal over the course of each game? In terms of putting on size, it won't happen over night but you have to admit there is something fundamentally wrong with the lack of big bodies that are present on our list!

2. So we didnt have a back up ruckman for the 2nd half of last season either? Why did Ratten play Setanta in the ruck for the end of last season? I understand Thursday night was different but its blatantly obvious that Jamo isn't physically ready to play on big blokes. How will his confidence be after the following players.
Gehrig, Q Lynch, Richardson, Rocca, Brown, Neitz,.........alll who may not be in the prime of their career but are much stronger than Jamo.
Setanta is surely the answer here??

3. I think it is a disgrace to leave Waite up back for 45 mins before changing him! Did they coaches actually think 1 quarter of waite up back & our problems would be solved?

Pull you head in mate, look logically at what I have said!

Our defence is a joke because of Dennis Pagan. Dennis' quickfix going into the 2004 season that saw us win 10 games and finish a semi-respectable 11th lead him to pick up players like Mick Martyn, David Teague, Brett Johnson, Jordan Bannister, Cory Mcgrath, Daniel Harford, Troy Longmuir, Corey McKernan. Admittedly not everyone of these players was picked up by Pagan, I think all excpet for MCkernan and not all before the 2005 season. I cannot help but think that out of these 6 or 7 potential draft picks there could have been the possibility of a gun full back or atleast 2 or 3 solid key position defenders.
Yes........we took these guys instead of gun picks......

Re-read the history of the time and TRY and understand why we took recylced players.
Lets not forget that of our current elder key pos defenders none have come through the draft. setanta - irish rookie, thornton - rookie, and waite - drafted f/s primarily as a forward. how could we possibly have missed this when drafting/trading in the last 5 years? I blame you Denis!
I blame Dennis too.......he recruited Setanta, Thornton, Scotland, Jamison, Bower........oh wait.......he DID recruit backmen......

What's your point again?

BTW, opne of those recylced hacks was our best defender on Thursday night, beating a number 1 draft pick and a player we were having nightmares about matching up on.

Moot point, but Thornton was on our list pre-Pagan.

Fundamentally wrong?

What are you going on about? We don't have a monster full back because our defenders are still kids learning the trade and haven't had the preseasons under their belt to develop the required weight. Besides Jammo wasn't outmuscelled on the weekend, he was out ran. It's his endurance more than his strength that needs work and that can only come after three or four preseasons.

We did have a backup ruckman late last year and it was Setanta. Why? Because Cloke and Aisake was injuried while Hampson and Jacobs were either injuried or just plain weren't ready. Besides Setanta wasn't that bad in the ruck considering he's never really played in that position. No different than Thursday night.

Jammo is doing fine and it getting more and more confident with every game. I don't know what you're seeing but I'm seeing a guy who thriving on every challange thrown his way. Setanta isn't the answer in defense at the minute because after suffering from a serious case of Ross River Fever he's actually far weaker than Jamison and probably wouldn't have got a game if it weren't due to our ruck issues.

Do you think that just because we intend to play Waite in defense this year that the coaches should draw a line across the middle of the ground and tell Waite that he should never ever cross it? That's little league footy.

Defenders cross into the forward 50 all the time. Hell even Thornton had a shot on goal against the Tigers.

Pull you head in mate, look logically at what I have said!
There's no logic to what you've said.
