The whole 2007 Off-Season was a Blunder. The only Bad one for Hine.

I was thinking off 2005 and that was good Top End but Not Much Depth

Yeah, our first round drafting we nailed in 2005, and we uncovered a gem in Toovey the rookie draft, but came up bust on Cook and and came a draw on Stanley, both in the 2nd round, and Jack Anthony at pick 37 blew up in the end.

I tend to agree somewhat that our drafting has been overrated at times.

One thing I am highly critical of is lack of foot skills as a requirement, if we aren't careful we may end up a team of triers who lack polish but give 110%, our last weeks back 6 is testament to this and I am afraid our forward half isn't a hell of a lot better. As a team we really lack xfactor and class.
Loki . . . I can't believe it needs to be said again . . . look at our drafting the last few years . . . . look at those players drafted that have been held back due to illness and injury

JEEZUZ

Im talking over a longer period then that and the list as a whole. Your narrowed it down to a 2 year period

Ok then let's just for the moment forget the futility of looking back and second guessing.

First and foremost I'm no drafting expert nor even a person with a wide knowlege of footy outside my own club so these are my own thoughts.

As I understand it there are a large number of factors involved in drafting, each of which must be balanced in a dynamic way.

1. What draft numbers are available to us for each drafting season.
2. What players match those numbers.
3. What are our specific and overriding team needs at that particular time.
4. What clubs have the opportunity to select before and after our each and every draft choice.

Added to those obvious factors is the big limiting factor of our consistent high ladder finishes, not only over the last little stretch of years but historicly our club has featured in an incredible number of finals series which of course pushes us lower down the drafting order than the bulk of other clubs.

So to be frank I doubt our club has downplayed kicking skills or even over looked them, those few with near elite skills each year are often snapped up by lower finishing clubs which leaves us with players with 'potential'.

Yep if Carmeri is out Biggest loss then we done a bloody Fantastic Job

The story was only focusing on relatively recent late draft picks. Look more broadly across the whole draft and I'm sure teams haven't fared so well.

For example, who knows what would have happened, who we would/could have drafted, and where we'd be now if we hadn't of traded out 1st round picks for Wood and Jolly. Yes, we may have missed the 2010 flag, but would we have won the 2011 flag?

Where would Carlton be if they hadn't have traded Kennedy and 2x 1st round picks for Judd. Where would the Brions be if the had have ignored the quick fix of Fev et al.

In an interview Hine himself admitted that picking Cox over Tippett was his biggest blunder.

Picking Cox would have to hurt eventually.
