Our first round pick

wont mean anything. someone before us will bid and the demons will match it, no matter where it is. still, its quite possible that gws/gc dont bid on him and melb get him 2nd round, effectively giving melb 4 first round picks. yuck, what the hell did they do to deserve that?

No. Only GWS and GC can force Melbourne to use one of their very early picks on Viney. If we bid our first pick Melbourne will use their pick 11 or whatever their activated mid-R1 compo pick turns out to be.

Did not know that. Melbourne will either get a bargain or pay a hefty premium. They could also call the bluff if GWS or GC bid, let Viney play 2 years up north then have him request a trade back to Melbourne...

We need genuine game breakers. Our team at the moment is filled with hard workers but not many players who will grab game by the scruff of the neck and win it. Players like menzel and stringer should be high priority despite injury concerns.

Heya CR... our main problem has been getting and keeping our 2 main game breakers on the field... Robbie Gray and Hamish Hartlett.

I'm a bit weary of risking a pick on Menzel and adding to our "stars who can't get on the park" list... however, in saying that just look at Joel Selwood's injury prone youth and his AFL output. Certainly complicates selections. :S

nope, melb will take him no matter what. pick 3 is not a hefty price for that kid.

i believe that gc or gws will not bid on viney just to make melb take him though, only see gc bidding on him if they think he is worth it at their pick, which i think he is exactly what they need in their team. my guess is viney goes to melbs 2nd round though.

to be honest, i think conjecture that gc will trade that pick is quite possible. as good as whitfield is they dont need him, i reckon they might go for mini draft pick # 1 and jack martin or trade down and take wines.

trading pick 2 (which would be whitfield) and caddy for pick 4 and 12 would be something that suits both teams too.

melb get whitfield, caddy, pick 3 (toumpas) and viney from this draft, gc get picks 4 and 12 to add inside ball winners or a key tall.

...
A guy like Eddie Betts or Stephen Milne would be good. Both were rookie picks, we just need to look for the right features (agility and skill, not speed and/or marking necessarily)

Definitely doesn't belong in a discussion about a first round pick.

Yes... or similar to Didak, Schneider, Mahoney, Brad Johnson, Brent Harvey... players who are dangerous around goals but have the ability to provide spells in the midfield.

I'm confused, why is pick 2 Whitfield?

I thought he was consensus number 1, so GWS would be getting him?

Pick 2 for Jack Viney isn't really paying overs, so I could see GC bidding on him.

Nah. Too old for where we're at IMO, not `core' enough as a player.

I dunno either Porthos I'm with Bernie, I would do it too. He is exactly what we need to stampede up the ladder to 9th spot :) But a midfield with Boak, Brad, Hartlett Pearce, Griffin, possibly a fit Gray surely should push us up to finals contention?

Do we have a crack at Jack Martin ??

To get him it's either going to take something involving our first round pick (which I would be highly surprised if the club went down this route) or if Danyle Pearce leaves as rumoured. I have a sneaking suspicion that if GWS want Pearce that they could take him without giving anything up with the uncontracted player rule or by free agency.

Griffin's 27 next year. 3 good years left if we're lucky for our first round pick. Pass.

Might as well make a play for Travis "I'm putting off contract talks until the end of the year" Cloke.

Not if he's 27 I agree

We exist to win premierships.

Not sure if continual draft picks will get us there with our development model at the moment. Sydney has gone down a different path and are doing ok. Saying they they bring in 21-23 year olds not 26-27 year olds :)

Continual draft picks got Geelong there, with a bit of judicious trading.

Trading your early picks for `prime' players that aren't the guys you can seriously build a side around, and just serve to make you marginally less decrepit but no closer to actual success, are how you Ninthmond.

Let me put it this way. If the Dogs traded him, do you think his absence would significantly change their ladder position? I'm very unconvinced that it would.
