Our first round pick

I have no idea who Plowman is, but let's get him. I hope he's a small forward. Mr. Plow and Rex Banner fighting over the small forward spot would be fun.
Yeah, but if Banner thinks Mr. Plow is trying to smuggle the hooch past him he's going to be catapulted out of there.

our midfield looks not too bad if they are all fit and on the park but it doesnt look balanced.

ebert , broadbent, boak, all can win the footy

gray, dangerous ball-winner in tight.

pearce, run and gun.

hartlett read the play and use his kick.

moore looks like he will join the first group. maybe jacobs too.

pittard can give us run and carry.

no way is that balanced.

ive said before that now and moving forward im not worried about our ability to win the ball.

i am worried about our ability to find targets by foot when we do,

and to move the ball quickly with carry through traffic before kicking to eliminate our opponents effectiveness to be able to just zone off a kick ahead.

I think you've nailed it.

Our disposal up the ground is hit and miss but not bad enough that we need to address it right now imo. 60kg outside players are always a massive risk anyway especially with high picks. It's the type of thing that can be fixed with a late pick or through FA when we feel like we are a half decent team. Our forwards are apparently pretty efficient when we get the ball inside 50 anyway.

Our disposal coming out of defence is a big problem and has been for years. We've tried to fix it by drafting Pittard and Jacobs, and sticking Hartlett and Pearce back there but it hasn't worked so far. We always have qtrs where we are stuck in defence and can't get the ball out. Best examples are probably the Richmond game or against Hawthorn.

But yeah, for me its best injury free good sized mid or best tall.

Our midfield is balanced?!?

Gray and Hartlett - yeah if either ever got a full pre-season under their belt and played 20 games in a year would be good.

The youngsters, well, when was our last Rising star nomination any of them managed?

Cassisi and McCarthy? Dear god, they try, but geez one looks backwards as his first option and the other can barely hit the side of a barn half the time on his right foot and never on his left.

Rodan, if you watched the quarter or half he plays yeah, he's ok as an attacking midfielder (with almost zero defensive side), but what about the other half of the game? He can be sub a few times a year, but not 22 times.

Our list is so full of holes that our first pick could be any of a KPF, KPD, inside midfielder, outside midfielder or ruck and we're plugging a need. Just as long as any player we draft isn't built so they'll struggle to put on weight. Oh and no fraking flankers or players with a unique blend of speed and endurance.

Amen

A dose of reality

I hate these threads. we pretend we know something about some kid doing yr 12 and still growing and we really know sweet Jack-all about him

And even worse, when we get them, we turn them into slippery footed duds, IF they even get out on the field that is.

I'd rather we just select 6 players at random from a hat.

This was they are more likely to be solid players in SANFL as back up players for the bozos masquerading as AFL players in this team

Bullshit, one some of us see them play = to or more so than we see AFL, we know there AFL skills and past knowledge to predict how they will go as we find a like for like current player

Also know personally around 50% of this years SA draft pool

We don't do it at all, its the coaches

This is why i know you're an idiot.

Someone with superb skills kick handbags etc..
We lack speed but we lack basic skill even more

We need just about everything.

The key forward post is a major, major concern for me, now. Butcher has Scott Gumbleton written all over him. Essendon made sure they brought in Hurley and Crameri also and have benefited from having a few more options to rely on. Daniel Stewart and Westhoff do not count anymore as tall forward options, whether you want to consider them as third, fourth, fifth or sixth tall forwards - they are terrible. Schulz is 27, Butcher is injury prone and probably will leave as soon as we cut his brother from our list. Our forward stocks are awful.

Small forwards - I think we are virtually the only team without a recognizable, pacy, effective small, ground level forward. Wingard hasn't played the position at all well. When he has thrived in matches, it has been playing upfield. Hitchcock is a pip-squeak, who is now injury prone and lacks pace and poise. I have no idea whether he will ever make it as a small forward for Glenelg, let alone us. Phillips will go down as a Shattock-like mistake in our recruiting.

Key defenders - we have three guys who could have been gorillas, but none who are. Chaplin and Carlile lack intensity and presence. Trengove now lacks any semblance of intensity or footy ability - worst player we have had in the past 6 weeks.

Strong, medium sized, skillful rebounding defenders. Who on our list could play like Josh Hunt, Beau Waters or Shannon Hurn. Answer is no-one.

Midfield - pace, run and skill by foot in a player who accumulates plenty of possessions. We have seven midfielders who are up to AFL level (Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Wingard, Broadbent, Brad, Moore), but 2 are always injury casualties. That midfield group has a complete lack of line breaking, ball carrying, pace.

So what to recruit first?

If there is a top ten, half decent tall forward, we should nab him IMO. That's how bad our tall forward stocks are.

butcher has massive promise. already shown talent at the level and is still younger than many key forwards that still arent showing jack. what was cloke doing at the same time in his career? i agree stewert must be pushed out of the side in the future. westhoff must play up the ground, has very good value there. we need to draft a partner for butch when shultz goes, we need to add that player now or next year.

i couldnt give 2 shits about the small forward position. have good delivery into the forward 50 and strong competitive talls and your small forwards look like gold. have the opposite and everything but your elite once a generation small forwards look crap. can worry about this later.

Key defenders - we have three guys who could have been gorillas, but none who are. Chaplin and Carlile lack intensity and presence. Trengove now lacks any semblance of intensity or footy ability - worst player we have had in the past 6 weeks.

need to address our key defenders. only 3 who i think are quite good but have deficiencies and have dropped their heads and playing in bad form. no one to come in to replace them while they build form in sanfl. must add multiple key talls in the next 3 years. must find some who can kick really well fletcher like as well as defend as well as shutdown talls and rebound talls. a mix. i honestly think we must bring in at least 10 key talls ( backs and forwards) in the next 3 years. this will maximize our chances of finding 3 or more good ones. how we expect to find 3-4 good tall defenders when we only draft 3 tall defenders in 7 years is beyond belief.

Strong, medium sized, skillful rebounding defenders. Who on our list could play like Josh Hunt, Beau Waters or Shannon Hurn. Answer is no-one.

we definitely need to add a defender with elite disposal who can actually defend. pittard will help back there but i think his future lies between there and the wing and a dew like kick in a strong body would be welcome. another we must find.

same as ive been talking about for awhile now. i back our ability to win the ball, we just get coraled by opponents who know we cannot sprint past them or defeat the zone set up a kick ahead with our skill by foot.

footskills under pressure and footspeed! this can turn out team around very quickly if we can add players who excel in these areas.

So what to recruit first?

our first pick in the top ten has to be spent on midfielder/ footskills as i dont like any talls in the top ten anyway. plenty of depth in key defenders will be available 2nd and 3rd round.

Will yesterdays result encourage the AFL to re-visit what picks we have in the draft?

We genuinely need 4 picks in the top 20 though thats the thing.

No we don't. We need to get away from this cult of personality, all that glitters is gold mentality and build a club culture that is resilient, committed and absolutely team-oriented. In short return to the ethos that Fos built at our club. The club before the individual.

Raw talent gets a club only so far

You need raw talent though.

How many first round picks do we have on our list already?

Until we build a team culture that is back to the true Port Adelaide tradition all we will be doing is pouring concrete on a swamp.
