As painful as it would be to let such an elite talent like Grundy go, I think it's what we have to do. Our midfield needs to bolstered with a quality, hard running midfielder more than we need a top quality ruckman. We already have 3 relatively young ruckman, all with a couple of years of development invested in them (Renouf at another club) - IMO the addition of a fourth will cause a very tricky selection situation in the next couple of years and isn't particularly necessary at a time where we are clearly deficient in skilled midfielders and quality small forwards.

Grundy looks to be a fantastic player, but I continue to have faith that more than one of our three existing ruckman will become very good AFL footballers - it's just the way ruckmen develop. Jamar, Jolly, Sandilands, Griffin, Bellchambers, Maric and more all looked like they were spuds early in their career and in the case of some took 6 or 7 years of their clubs patience to become good players (I think Mark Jamar had his first >5 disposal game in 2010... he was an AFL footballer in 2001).

I would be highly surprised if he was available at pick 7 or 8 or whatever ridiculously high pick behind Melbourne and the Bulldogs who get rewarded twice for being shithouse.

What could be factored in is a bolter or two from the TAC U18s final series. That might make Toumpas or Mayes available. It also depends of whether GCS or GWS take a risk with Grundy so early. The stats stated earlier regarding ruckmen is valid moreso with the direction of the game making the second pure ruckman almost redundant.

I don't disagree with that - it's just that I am not sure that the second ruck will only be just that - he will need to have the ability to play as a tall forward ro backman as well.
But why "within 5 years"?

Because thats how long it takes for footballing fact to get through to media `experts' and from there to the wave of repeaters who rely on News Ltd & Foxtel.

Brendan Lade was a ruckman, but he could kick goals; expecting some other contribution from the 2nd ruck is nothing new, and doesn't mean you can get away with a third-tall ragdolling at ruck contests.

Exactly. You need two guys both of whom have a second string to their bow. That is why Grundy is gold. He'd be in the top few of this draft as a key forward. So which study is relevant to him? The key forward one that shows close correlation between early picks and stars, or the ruck one that doesn't?

To be honest I haven't watched footage of Grundy yet, so no comment. However, I'm always suspicious of `ruck/forward' as a grouping because it covers a whole bunch of different player types.

If you're right and he's draftable in the top few picks as a pure forward, then no-one will give a shit if he can ruck, so I doubt that's true.

I have said it forever and a day, Garlett would be massive for our side, pace and skill, takes the game on and like to kick long to big forwards. Also puts it to big forwards advantage, Butcher, Schulz (and Nick Salter)

The risk is to big on Garlett IMO, seems also to be a downhill skier

Our midfield is not as bad as people think. We already have Boak, Thomas, Broadbent, Gray, Hartlett able to go through there and Wingard, Ah Chee, Young, Moore and Jacobs will be online soon. That ignores Cornes, Cassisi, Pearce and McCarthy, Banner, Rodan. What it needs is time to develope.

Actually our squad is reasonably well balanced and there is no doubt Parker will utter the words "...best available..." at interviews between now and Draftday.

Gray and Hartlett - yeah if either ever got a full pre-season under their belt and played 20 games in a year would be good.

The youngsters, well, when was our last Rising star nomination any of them managed?

Cassisi and McCarthy? Dear god, they try, but geez one looks backwards as his first option and the other can barely hit the side of a barn half the time on his right foot and never on his left.

Rodan, if you watched the quarter or half he plays yeah, he's ok as an attacking midfielder (with almost zero defensive side), but what about the other half of the game? He can be sub a few times a year, but not 22 times.

Our list is so full of holes that our first pick could be any of a KPF, KPD, inside midfielder, outside midfielder or ruck and we're plugging a need. Just as long as any player we draft isn't built so they'll struggle to put on weight. Oh and no fraking flankers or players with a unique blend of speed and endurance.
