i'm abit bored......

obviously our forward structure may change significantly next year, from the current set up, with thoughts bought in by the new coach. however, our current line up of talls in sav, digby and petrie seems abit top heavy to me. they all seem to try hard. Contest well with the ball in the air, though not many contested marks (except drew and sav when he gets a run at it). when the ball hits the ground they also put in second efforts (especially drew). however, none of them are really blessed with pace. this makes us very prone to a rebounding type defensive. in the past we were able to out mark the opposition (carey, mckernan, scholl, crocker) and hence the lack of speed didn't always seem so apparent.

also, i am not entirely convinced that byron's best role is as a small forward. he is such a dynamic player when he gets the ball that every effort to put him near the ball will really help us. him hardly touch the ball some games is a terrible waste. i really think that he has played his best football in the backline and serious thought should go into whether he should go back there so as to be more involved in play.

any ideas? i was thinking the following as a possible senario...

talls: sav, petrie
medium: jones, junior
smalls: harding

the final spot rotating through the midfield or depending on the makeup of opposition
eg harvey, king, shagga
or new a new player such as watson.
or archer

btw i don't think that clayton really has a role to play in our team anymore. seems to me that harding has more than sufficiently taken his place in the forwards.

whatever the makeup i'm really looking forward to something different.

Although D.Motlop and Jones are good overhead, I think their run is best used a bit further out from goal.

If the Brett Burton plus draft picks for Wayne Carey rumour is true, I would be reasonably happy because I think we need a midsized forward who is more of a lead and mark player than a crumber/runner.

Seeing as how Diggers misses out in this setup where would you put him, or would he go back to the MK's?

IMHO, worth a shot at CHB, with Jase at FB, Colbert, Teague, Sinclair and one of Pickett/S.Motlop/D.Motlop/King/Clayton/Robbins/draft pick/traded player filling up the flanks and pockets.

Never liked Colbert as a key position player, worthwhile as a sweeper when he has no opponent... his lack of pace has been exposed this year, although maybe that's Pagan's fault for choosing horribly wrong matchups like Joel Bowden! As a sweeper he can play a Paul Roos type of role, blocking the path of key forwards and mopping up errant long bombs. There's probably a hundred times this year where I've exclaimed "that's your man Colbert!".. much prefer him in a nondescript role without an actual player match up.

not so sure about this backline either darky. i'm sure that baird is going to get a run in the backline next year. so that means we will have atleast four talls there (colbert, baird, digby, mccartney, ?martyn) maybe even five if you include archer. of these guys, only archer and baird are mobile to any degree.

to me, the most likely composition will be two genuine talls (colbert & .....), two intermediate size (archer, baird) and two small types (sinclair & one of byron, s motlop, teague, pratt... in that order). that leaves digby and mccartney (and maybe micky if he stays) fighting for the last tall spot. maybe even watt/crowe will get a crack at that same spot.

which ever way you look at it, several of our talls and smalller type defenders will not get a serious run next year barring injury. serious decisions will need to made as to who represents both the best value at the moment and the most likely to succeed in the future.

Now I know I will get shot down and murdered for this.. because Digby is a favorite here (and I dont have a problem with the guy- he has been great but...)

Trade Him..

Lets look at it:
Petrie does a fine almighty job- and will eventually be used in the ruck.
Hale is developing his body- once he does that he is sure to become our CHF in time.. Petrie can fill that role while Hale develops/gets used to the role
Sav is fine at FF.. and once he's gone- well we can draft another player in a year or so or to develop into that position- or we could use Jones- something which is not out of the question.

Defence:
He could move down to defence, but where? McCartney will be at FB/CHB next year, Crowe will in time be at FB I would imagine, Colbert will fill CHB or float across, and we still have Baird in that backline..

So what use have we in all honesty got for him, some would argue he could be a 3rd fwd, but I think its to top heavy with 3 talls.. and none of the talls (Petrie,Rocca or Morrel) have much pace..

Shoot me if u want.. but thats my opinion

GO Roos

I agree to some extent that Colbert fould be good without an opponent, but Baird is also in the same boat. He can't shut anyone down, but is good (probably better than Colbert) at running the ball out.
I think we would be better off if Mick retired, and McCartney just slotted in his spot for a season or two untill we develope someone else.
Watt needs to get a chance there as well.
Colbert could be good man on man as well, as long as it isn't on the best forward of the opposition (ie Holland round 21)

Look forward to a huge season from Corey Jones. I know I go on a lot about this bloke but I just think he is all class.
I think he will be in our top 5 players next year if he can stay fit and have a solid preseason.

Leigh Harding to be even more consistant next year.

Drew Petrie is another one like Jones who I believe is all class. It takes longer for big blokes to come on but I think it will happen for Drew next year with a lot more stints in the ruck. Always looks better when he is on the move.

Not sure on Digby but he does take a very strong mark out in front. I'd play him CHF at the start of season and see how he goes. With more muscle over the summer he could be useful.

Pickett is a waste in the forward line and should be played on the wing. On a wing he will be more involved in the play and should get a lot more of the ball. Here he can use his skills to deliver some lace out passes to Jones and Rocca. If he can't get it himself he can also play in a defensive manner and can also be a target for Baird running out of the back line.

My center line is Pickett, Makepeace and Stevens with Stevens having stints in the center bounce clearances as well. All these blokes can pass very well to forwards and a much better option then say Rawlings, Simpson and Cohcrane passing to forwards.

I'll talk about backline next week:eek:

Isn't he more an explosive player than an endurance player? I doubt that he could run out a quarter let alone a whole game. If we were on top, he might be ok, but accountability isn't his strong point and his opponant would be used to set up the oppostion forward thrusts.

Hopefully our forward line will be more settled next year with Petrie, Sav and Diggers our main marking options and Jonesy, Junior, Harding, Byron etc running amok.
