Analysis Our Game Plan under JLO

In regards to Cox, I think you just described the modern intercept defender, in the mould of McGovern, but as I mentioned if he is behind Hogan, Lobb, Tabs, McCarthy & the other rucks in Darcy & potentially Meek in playing forward, then I personally would be asking to play back to be that 3rd tall defender, take the weakest forward & be the intercept defender.

None of those players above have that capability & if durability gets you a game, then I’d be asking for it. Adam Hunter at WC was an average defender & an average forward, but he was able to change a game with his durability.

The wing is changing, you just need to look at Geelong. Over a game they would run Selwood, Duncan, Menegola, Kelly & even Blicavs through there amongst others.

It’s about getting the correct match up from game to game & having your best players around the ball for longer. Walters may spend 3 minutes a quarter on a wing with the instruction to be very aggressive in running forward. His man will be covered by others on turnover as part the defensive structure.

These are the type of plans we haven’t seen for years at Fremantle & what makes the likes of Hardwick, Clarkson & Simpson premiership coaches. Dom Sheed is not quick, but that exact type of creativity & pre planning is what won WC the flag last year when pushed aggressively forward to kick the final goal.

Henderson at Hawthorn had a great year on a wing, with a different role. He doesn’t follow his opponent deep into defence as he is covered as part of the Hawks defensive structure. Henderson’s role was to be the link between forward & back & played predominantly between the arcs.

I’m just saying that we are now in a position to be far more creative with that wing rotation & less predictable.
Im not having a go to be clear. But rather presenting an opinion thats different as I completely disagree with your post.
Cox is anything but the modern defender who can cover ground quickly even when playing tall. We tried Mundy in the intercept defender/playing on the weakest tall forward role a couple of season ago and it didnt work because he could not cover the ground quick enough. Cox would be the same at afl level in my view.
Adam Hunter was a borderline All Australian multiple times in his career and a match winner numerous time when pinch hitting forward. One of the most underrated Eagles players of all time in my view.
I think the wing is going back more to the way it used to be a couple of seasons ago, but not like it was ten years ago. We got killed with too many players going at the contest too hard and teams need a couple of seagull types on the wings to link up play.
Again Im not having a go, but Im pretty sure Walters has never played on the wing for all but a brief period. In my view it would be a new position for him if he went there.
In my view id rather play four players rotating through the wings max as id prefer a more settled line-up with more specialist position players. It seems like Acres and Aish will be playing some wing. Id like to rotate two more quicker players with them on the wings. Hopefully a fully fit Stephen Hill and a quick draftee like Stephens who would also spend time forward. I want Tucker onball more for what its worth as well.

No problem, I enjoy the discussion. I think Cox has a lot more show & had surprising sprint results at testing along with a good vertical leap.

In regards to Walters & the wing, I think we will see him coming off there from time to time, but certainly not for long periods as I mentioned. But with all these inside mids, we’re may have to turn one or two of them into outside players & I’m convinced that Acres will be given first shot.

I think Tucker will be around the ball more often too, but he & Aish may be competing for a starting spot, but both definitely are part of the best 22.

Walters is not a Gaff type player, And wing would be a total waste of his skill set just my opinion.

Cox a young KP who has shown his class and football nous in his limited time on the list . Is the only tall on the list capable of the swingman role but is disregarded in favour of Taberner who has been given 9 years to show what he,s got but apart from a hand full of games where he has shown reasonable form is the preferred KP.
Cox is the future ,Tabs has limited future. It's hard to follow the reasoning why Tabs is the saviour.

I think he was part of the equation due to lack of competition, but injuries have taken their toll and now we can
Rotate, cover injuries better with our key positions.
All our talls will be required, because we do have depth but durability is the question.
Tabs will more than likely be finished by 28-29.

It will be interesting to see how Cox rocks up to preseason. He hasn’t shown the application that Taberner has so far. Cox has a higher ceiling, but there are no guarantees that he reaches that, imo. In the meantime reward the player who has managed to improve his craft every year on the list.

Because as of right now, Taberner is the better player. If Cox can improve and not be a spud then I'll admit i was wrong about him, but Taberner is probably our best contested mark in the team.

After nearly ten years he should be unbeatable.Tabs after 10 years has improved to serviceable.
The ten years have produced how many best on grounds?
I,m tired of the same old story season after season re Tabs.

Taberner has some great weapons with his marking ability and height-running capacity combo. He really has shown a serious deficiency with his decision making over the years, which can undo a lot of his aforementioned weapons (and in some instances turn those strengths into actual liabilities). If (and whether) he can improve his decision making would transform him.

He's not the greatest pack marker in the world, which would help him get more reward for playing closer to goal and probably play a major role to overcome/minimise the problematic his decision-making has on the team (i.e. minimal decisions to make <30m out from goal). I think for a guy his height that should be a lot easier to rectify than his poor and/or slow decision making.

Just get our key forwards fit and on the park.

Then get a forward structure where we spread and isolate.

Until we do this we can have all the skill in the world but if we keep having forwards in clusters we will remain the easiest team to defend against.

That's a very binary way to measure success or failure for Tabs.

Rather a forward line that isn’t expected to be both ways and defend ie Hogan before he got injured. Was running ridiculous numbers for a wingman let alone a key forward. A proper set up enabling forwards to be maximised with less output then under Ross. That’s my hope.

I still think Cox is in our best 22 on a good day. At the very worst he should get a spot on the bench. If Logue or Hamling is injured, He can cover their spot.

He can cover a KPF spot as a 2nd or 3rd tall.

Yep true, from 2013-2016, Our KPF stocks were dire.... We Had an ageing pav. Apeness could of been a Solid KPF/ ruckman but had multiple knee injuries. Tanner Smith looked ok in some parts of 2016, but was shot with injuries too. Tabs was still developing around 2013-16.

Its Now 2019. We now have Lobb and Hogan capable as spear heads or at least the likely players to be double or triple teamed as a FF. Tabs, McCarthy, Cox, Hell even a Nathan fyfe can play as a Roaming CHF as a 2nd or 3rd tall.

Now you say Tabs will likely to be finished at 28-29. I doubt it.

Jono Griffin lasted until he was 31/32 years old, thats mainly because he played every 2nd game as a depth ruckman as Sandilands was injured every 2nd game.

I dont think it will.....

If Walters plays Half the game on the wing and the other half on a forward flank. He can still kick his 30-35 goals a year. That means switkowski and Matera plays on a forward pockets.

This 2019 season stats wise, is walters best in his career: 40 goals from 22 games on an average at 21.8 disposals a game

Would think it would be the same as this year except less battering of his body. Put Brayshaw/Cerra inside for replacement...

I think it is being generous to compare Tabs to Josh Jenkins, similar height, etc. Jenkins was traded at 29,
and kicking around 150 goals for Adelaide?
I can see a similar path with Tabs, handy player but always waiting for that breakout season.
If Cox does come on, and we keep Dixon? This year will make or break a few of them.

Jenkins kicked 296 goals from 147 games for the crows. But he started late though. His 1st game was 94 days after his 23rd birthday. Played 11 games in his 1st season then was in the Starting 22 from 2013 onwards.

He was the last good gem they got under that recruiter matt rendell. Ironic, they got him as an insurance player in case Kurt tippet left.

But he was fortunate with the crows midfield and forward line

The midfield was good, if you take away the 2017 Grand final and a few horrible games in the last 2-3 years.

The forward line in 2017 Had Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins, Charlie Cameron, Eddie Betts, Tom Lynch and Mitch McGovern. Thats 2 tall 195 cm and 100 kg KPFs in Walter and Jenkins, 2 190cm guy in Lynch and McGovern and 2 small blokes in betts and Cameron. Yet the 2 only guys left in that forward line is Tex and Lynch.

Jenkins was the 2nd tall as walker was likely to be double teamed. Jenkins did get a few cheap goals from 10 metres out directly in front.

Cox will always be kept since he can play both ends.

Dixon? Sure he has a good 1st game. But next season, I see him play 5-10 games off the bench and on a forward flank as depth. Kerstens departure opened dixon his chances.

I agree.

Our list isn’t ready to make finals and it’s better for us to make some medium term decisions.

We don’t play Cox he’s off to SA and Taberner will retire in three years.

The retention of Ryan depends on Cox. Got a feeling we lose one, we lose both.
