Am I the only one who is concerned we may have taken GWS players that are looking more likely to be duds than guns?

So much of our rebuilt will depend on these 6 players. We need to move past mediocre but I'm not sure we have. Not one was a regular at GWS. That's a RED FLAG.

Whiley - no class, poor skills, gets caught too easy and not a good shot at goal. Looks less likely than likely.

Jaksch - Horrible debut season, and haven't heard a word about him so far for 2016. Weitering showed more in 1 quarter. Looks to be timid and second guesses himself. Needs to show something this year. Looks less likely.

Plowman - probably the best of the lot but how good? Has shown glimpses at GWS. ??

Phillips - Not impressed with his first 2 games this far. Poor hands, lacks presence. Needs to improve dramatically. Big men take time though. ??

Sumner - is this guy in the country? Haven't heard a single peep about him. Is he any good? ?

Lamb - struggles to find ball in first hit outs but overall poor performance of team makes it hard to judge. ??

Compare this to Collingwood -

Adams and Trealor - we would swap all ours for just either of them. They are both quality. Ours are all ?? We have no idea.

Whiley has shown signs. needs some class around him to shine

Jaksch Needs to show some agro this year. Has the skills.

Plowman Injured

Phillips - surprisingly average during NAB considering his preseason was very good

Sumner- Injured

Lamb I think he will surprise to the upside.

Adams and Trealor- how much did they pay for them though

We have no idea about them because more than half of them haven't even played a game for us yet.

Jury should not have reached a verdict yet, none of the evidence has been presented. Circumstantial evidence is not permitted.

We can't wait to surround blokes with class - they have to be the class, or at least some sort of quality.

Our rebuild DOES NOT depend on the GWS kids turning out to be guns. There's no shocking answer to this thread. None will become guns. None. We'll have done well if a few of them become decent role players. If you ever expected our GWS kids to all turn out to be superstars then you were very much living in a dillusion.

We paid almost nothing for most of our GWS players (with the exception of the insane Jaksch trade). Collingwood traded a young All Australian and all their draft picks for two years. Of course Collingwood got better players.

Our rebuild depends on Jacob Wietering, Harry McKay, Charlie Curnow, David Cuningham and Patrick Cripps. Those are the players who lead our future. Not a bunch of fringe dwellers from a bottom 8 club who are only on our list because we had to trade or delist half of the club.

Fair Questions raised. Whiley doesn't impress much. Jaksch does the odd good thing but doesn't look overly impressive. Haven't seen enough of the rest they seem to be mostly injured. Fair chance that none of them would be key players and that some of them will just be good ordinary peripheral players.

My best understanding:

GWS trade 1: #7 (Duggan) for Boekhorst, Whiley & Jaksch

GWS trade 2: (Menzel) for Kerridge, Plowman, Phillips, Sumner & Lamb...........and a little bonus of Geelong's first rounder for next year for #8, this year.
If this trade didn't happen, we wouldn't have H.McKay on the books. He'd be playing for Adelaide.

I'd expect at worst, to have Boekhorst, Jaksch, Kerridge & Plowman playing good football for the CFC.
You have to take the trades in context and there's little doubt some of these guys won't make it, but we had a good idea that would be the case.
We did the GWS a favour and they sort of did one in return for us.

The other thing we have to remember is that we couldn't just take on too many 18 year olds or carry players that had had their time at Carlton. Must say I still feel somewhat disappointed for letting Giles and Holman go. Reckong we could have given them a little time under Bolton.

Agree with the concerns raised in the OP, here is my take.
Whiley - average player, slow and poor disposal, nope
Jakcsh - too skinny (Has he seen the inside of a gym in his 3 years in the system?), poor disposal and lacks aggression, nope
Plowman - never seen him play, holding out hope, could be the best of the GWS lot
Phillips - jury is out, I prefer Wood at this stage
Sumner - injury riddled
Lamb - jury is out

gandaal goes WHACK.

Hoping SOS knows what he is doing !!

With respect to SOS, which part of what he did should we have concerns about? The GWS guys?

Kerridge alone may prove to be the better fit for Carlton. Menzel is more talented, no argument, but Adelaide are already having issues around him.
We had to take Lamb & Sumner off GWS's hands for the deal to work, but that wasn't a problem for us given where we are.
Club is very happy for Plowman and Phillips has been terrific all pre-season.......not so much in his couple of NAB games though.

Now we don't know where Geelong may finish and what their first rounder may net, but I'd say that SOS and co, were more than happy getting Harry McKay.
They met all their objectives and did it very shrewdly and systematically.

I'm pretty confident on Plowman if he gets his body right but would be very surprised if any of the other guys make it when hopefully we are a top side.

no love for jack?

Our drafting history around 2009-2012 left a massive age gap hole in our list. We needed to fill it with competent players of that age quickly before we became a real disaster, despite last season's results we have not become a real disaster. Because of the dire need to find these players we haven't been able to fill it with starts, that's what we will be doing with the guys we have been drafting recently.

This massive drafting hole is not only the reason for our demise but it's the reason why we have a whole heap of GWS players in their early 20s on our list.

While these players might not be much good, it's a win for us if some of them turn out to be. These guys serve a purpose. Without them we become a list with very few AFL capable players for depth and support, too many kids and a team forced to play kids who aren't ready.

With them we have some young guys who are potentially going to make good footballers, who can play senior football, carry part of the load and protect the teenagers we are bringing in.

Unfortunately due to where our list is, rebuilding is not as simple as going out and chasing draft picks and teenagers. We need to create an environment and a list that will protect them and see them develop properly. This has meant picking up young AFL ready players who may not be that great and shedding some talented but not ideal role models.

Our top end talent will come via the draft. We will hopefully have some wins with trades like this where some of these guys will go on.
