One thing that surprised me was when Hine said Bucks would play Mooney in the forward 50...

I know he has extreme pace, but I would have thought we would use his pace running with the ball (i.e. wing, high half forward / half back), rather than running when he doesn't have the ball (ie forward pocket to tackle / chase / get to the ball). In my opinion he would be too restricted as a deep forward.

Plus, deep forwards generally need really good finishing skills to be able to make the most of limited opportunities, which I wouldn't have thought Mooney would have yet...

Not trying to second guess the coaching staff, who I know would know far more about where / how to play him than I, just for the sake of discussion.

Maybe they think him as part of the forward setup released from the kick in, and hoping his pace will burn a defence and that his kicking will just need to be dobbing it on the run from 15-20 metres right in front.

Bouncing the ball will be a skill that he needs to learn, because the Sherrin bounces a little differently to a soccer ball.

Basically if he plays forward I think his aim will be to drag the defence out, and then to outrun them back in. More a positional thing, trying to give us numerical advantages in contests.

But heck I'd have little idea either in the plans! Will just be great seeing it all come to fruition.

Yeah, interesting.

I know he has great speed, but there is different types of leg speed in AFL (and different positions tend towards different speed types). I would just rather see him play a position where is is able to use 'run and carry' type speed (which is the only type of speed that requires having possession of the ball), because that will be the most similar to what he does in Ireland right now, and it de-emphasises the need to be a terrific kick, and would be good to use in conjunction with good agility.

No doubt this is tempory, as he doesnt have the engine to be and AFL midfielder yet, but when he gets more endurance he'll be moved up no doubt. Plus his extreame pace will be VERY useful in forward 50 make defenders shit themselves

I guess my main point is - you want to play this kid in a position where he has room to run... That generally is as an outside mid (wing) or flanker. In the forward 50 means he will be doing a lot of defensive running (i.e. pressure on the ball carrier) but not a lot of running with the football and breaking lines.

The guy also has to learn to play footy as well. Being in the forward line could be a good way to introduce him because he wouldn't have the added pressures of making sure tackles stuck etc which isn't part of Gaelic football, plus he could use his speed to damage the opposition. I know most guys start off back so they learn where to run and also learn the defensive aspect of the game but depending on what the club sees in him it could be a great position to start at.

And imagine his forward pressure. I think the best man we have at the moment for forward pressure is Leon Davis and when he is out of the forward line the pressure quickly drops away. Mooney could add that spark.

He's fast, he's really really fast, he's so fast he make fast guys look not fast. (The longest yard).

I don't think he'll play AFL football next year, and in the VFL he'll probably play an assortment of positions.

And when he does come up to the firsts, I see him starting out as a super sub.

Don't forget his vertical leap, could fill the mobile ruck posi.

I reckon Witts might be senior listed and Mooney would be fighting for a post round 11 elevation.

If he started inside the 50, with an extra man in defence, could be hard to find space for him to run into. But with that pace he could make a lot of players shit themselves coming out. Even if his tackling is not vice like yet he only needs to hang on to a defender whose taken two steps.

That type of harrasing pressure is enormous. Daisy's harrassment is sometimes like having two players in one. Player A lobs one over his head and it's barely reached the target and Daisy's already there on player B's hammer.

Like to see him nab Wojinski trying to burn out of our forward 50. You could almost think about setting him tasks to mow down dangerous pacey players around the ground. Just mow them down and then dish off.

On the results, I thought it was best in this combine, not best ever. Can someone confirm that?

I posted this in another thread, after listening to the CTV interview with Hine.

Derek Hine said:
At the recent draft camp ..... he (Mooney) would have broken the all-time records for speed, agility and vertical jumps.

At 185cm or whatever he is, I'd doubt he'd fit into the role of mobile ruck, no matter his leap. Possibly could do a Jordan Lewis though.

Also there is often differences in how club and official tests are conducted I think. Still great to see a player with genuine elite athletic traits at the club.

Stalked his FB as you do...

There are a few pics of him playing Gaelic back home, geez just from still photos you can see he has an amazing vertical leap on him, some people even commenting that he can teach some kangaroos a lesson in how to jump!

He is going to be something special if he gets his skills up to a good level...

Yes, it wasn't a funny joke, but a joke nonetheless.

I also just stalked his facebook, as you do.

His info says, "Rookie player at Collingwood Football Club"

Should we read into that much?

Also, if that's his missus in his profile pic, I'm mirin' hard.

No idea if I'm allowed to do this but facebook is a public domain and his privacy settings are obviously set to 'public'. Anyway, check this out.

Please mods, delete if I've done the wrong thing.

Although I think its rough tapping a youg kids Facebook page I will say when you look at how high he is the bloke he is jumping over is well off the ground too, he is a top 10 ten pick if he was in Australia. Can he adapt? Worth the punt.
