Was bored so I was looking through AFLtables and saw that we have won 80 of our last 100 games over the last 4 years. We have played 25 games every year since 2011.

Even more impressive is we have won 42 of our last 50 including 6 straight finals.

Brad Hill has won 43 of his 51 games the 3rd best winning % of any player ever to have played 50 games or more and highest of any current player. Izzy, Pop and Breust are also in the top 10 all time.

Of those 20 losses 8 were to Geelong, 3 to Sydney and 2 each to Collingwood and Richmond, with single losses to Nth,WC,Ade,Port and Freo.

13 losses were at the G (8 to Cats and 3 in Finals), 1 in Tas, 1 at Etihad with 5 interstate.

Also, of those 20 losses 9 were by 10 points or less and 7 were between 11 and 20 points. with just 4 by over 20 points.

The biggest loss was a whopping 62 points to Richmond, followed by 41 points, again to Richmond and 41 also to the Pies.

In 12 of 20 losses we scored more behinds than goals, including all 3 finals losses.

Also just noticed that all 5 finals losses under Clarko we scored more behinds than goals.

In our 13 finals wins we scored more behinds than goals just twice winning those games by less than a goal.

Amazingly in 2014 we only scored more behinds than goals once, in the rd 5 los to Geelong.

Great read. If you're still bored, how does this compare with Geelong's famous run? Or even BL?

Geelong have won 75 of their last 100 games or 75%

Geelong best years from 2008-2011 have played 100 games and lost a total of 16 games with 84wins.

Geelong's best was 86/100. They won 19/20 from Round 6 2007.

Pretty sure Brisbane never had such a good run, they just turned it on in September.

Edit: the soonest the Hawks could theoretically equal Geelong's record would be to win the 2015 GF after going through the entire season undefeated.

The Lions did win 16-in-a-row to claim the 2001 flag (a feat matched by Carlton 1995 and Essendon 2000)

That said their best run was Round 1 2001 to Round 1 2005 (76.5 wins in 100 games)

Evidently the only club that touches the Geelong 2007-2011 / Hawthorn 2011 - 2014 run is:

Hawthorn Round 1 1986 - Round 1 1990 (82/100 games)

Notable mention to Essendon 1999 - SF 2002 (74.5 / 100 games)

For Hawthorn to equal its 82/100 record it would need to win the first 6 games of next season...

Here's what I think might be the top 6 'best out of 100', but I haven't scoured every VFL/AFL season:

Geelong R6 2007 to R5 2011 86/100

Collingwood R3 1926 to GF 1930 84.5/100

Melbourne R15 1955 to R13 1960 83*/100

Hawthorn R1 1986 to R1 1990 82/100

Carlton R1 1906 to Round 1 1911 81.5/100

Hawthorn R1 2011 to GF 2014 80/100

*includes 82 wins and 2 draws

Note that in each case above I tracked from the earliest date (e.g. the Cats also won 86/100 for 100 game periods starting between R6-R14 2007 and ending between R5-R13 2011).

Hawthorn's record against all clubs save Geelong is 78/89 (or 87.64%)

Also worth raising that of the 6 clubs we have won the fewest flags during our run...

1. Geelong won 3 flags (07, 09, 11)
2. Collingwood won 4 flags (27-30)
3. Melbourne won 4 flags (55-57, 59 and on their way to 60)
4. Hawthorn won 3 flags (86, 88-89)
5. Carlton won 3 flags (06-08)
6. Hawthorn have won 2 flags (13-14)

Just shows that we probably should have snared a 3rd flag in 2011 or 2012...

Just for a bit of contrast how many of our first 100 games in the VFL did we win and what was our first ever win

All I seem to hear about when Geelong is playing is Bruth and Dennis jizzing over Duckwood and how he has the best winning percentage of anyone ever to play the game..
Thanks for that visual, mate, and not a pleasant one at that! :D;)

14.5/100 R1 1925 to R11 1930

North didn't do much better - 15.5/100 over the same period.

First win v Footscray Round 5 1925

Just shows that we probably should have snared a 3rd flag in 2011 or 2012...
2015 will do the trick

Thanks for that Whirling. I am not sure Gold Coast and GWS are tracking much better in their first 100 games despite the crazy amount of concessions they were given

Yeah, but luckily we still have a chance of amending that situation...

In '11 there were two teams clearly better than us (Coll, Geel). '12 was the one that got away.

Agree. 2011 was pretty amazing in that we still went 18-4 for the home / away season.

In 85% of seasons that sort of record would net the minor premiership and we would have gone into the finals series as deserved premiership favourites. I'm not sure if that record was more indicative of the lack of competitiveness across the competition (the gap from the big 3 to the rest was massive) or that we ran into two of the greatest teams ever in the one season (Geelong 2011 - 21-4 with one of the best offensive game plans ever vs. Collingwood 2011 - 22-3 statistically one of the best defensive set ups ever)
