Personally I agree. I think as a general rule AFL clubs are far, far too conservative. I mean you can pretty safely cut a Chris Hyde and get an Adam Bentick or the like on the cheap. AFL clubs are very very keen to stick with what they know.

Probably like most things the aim is to be about in the middle of the list. The Carlton, Richmond and Hawthorns are up the top against their will because we are rubbish and cutting deadwood.

I think some of the St Kilda, Melbourne, Adelaide types are perhaps a bit too complacent and think they are closer to success than they are.

I like the Eagles cutting seven guys after a premiership (lots of retirments and easy decisions). I think that every year you have to do that sort of surgery.

Tivendale is a 22-game a season player. Not popular, but none-the-less a key guy in the team and a top-10 in the B+F.

The days of trading Hall are over. Might as well keep him around as a 10-game a season back-up. Can't hurt too much.

Gaspar is playing out time. He is toast.

Hartigan, Moore, Jackson, Meyer and Krak have to be under the pump a bit.

Hyde will want a good season as well. Tough to see Wallace finding room for Johnson, Hyde, Hartigan, White, Newman, Foley, Raines, Polo, Connors, King and Collins on next seasons' list. Probably 2-4 more back-pocket / inside midfield / rover types than we want.

Agree the Saints and Melbourne do have a bit of complacency about their list-partIcularly the Dees. Can understand Saints a bit, they were wracked by injury last year. After this year will probably see them sort the wheat from the chaff.

I suspect club decision makers treat the concept of 'turnover' too conservatively because they fear being seen to make a mistake. It's the same reason precious few trades get made these days, during trade week.Bit like politics in a way, once you get into power,no need to rock the boat too much.

The way I see it,we're paying guys like Miller and Terry pretty good bucks-the're our paid 'experts'-trust in them-they should trust in themselves.Go make decisions.Decide if, say Moore or Hyde(just examples) are up to it.You've had a good look at them. The RFC aren't in the buisness of making Coburg competative.-38 spots on the list, they're precious.

Pretty much agree with the rest, bar Meyer(he's clearly talented, just a little immature-happy to give him a little breathing space.

Hall i don't agree with too. He's exactly the sort of player we should cut come seasons end.He hasn't got any better in the last 3 or 4 years. We now have Schulz,Polak,Moore Maguane and soon Hughes who can do his type of roll.I'd rather find out definately if Schulz or Maguane has what it takes to make it than keeping putting a very average player like Hall in the side each week.

Anyway, 7 is the type of number we should see as about the right number to cut each season.

There's no doubt we've been a good pruning team recently ( we had to though)
We only have 8 players on the list with over 100 games experience and 15 over 50.
I haven't looked at all clubs but the 'baby' Hawks have 7 and 14 respectively, whilst someone like Sydney has 6 or 7 more of each.

That says we have done some serious pruning and that we have a way to go still.

Meyer is clearly under the pump. Why can't people see this? What has he done in two years? One half-reasonable game against Geelong last year and one clever goal around his right side at the G.
Just because he was drafted highly, doesn't automatically make him a gun. I've seen little to suggest Meyer will carve out a successfull career as an AFL footballer. I hope he can do something this season. Based on what I've seen, I remain unconvinced.
As for Quentin Lynch? Pleaaaaaase! The guy is a Scott Cummings clone. One dimensional and the only real weapon he has is a booming kick and a clown-act of throwing his glove away. I wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle this year and forevermore.

2 years? Why would you expect so much from someone, let alone a young man after only 2 years.

Agree with Hyde and he is in a lot of trouble if this OP affects during the year.

Johnson won't go anywhere, so there's 1. Foley will be our #1 midfielder after 2007, 2. Newman is more than an inside player, his skills are very good, 3. Raines showed in 2006 that he is a player, 4. Polo looks the goods but still has plenty to go, 5. Connors will be there next year, has to be, 6.

Our 2 rookies will get 2 years IMO, so they all stay. Hartigan is gone unless he can perform consistently in 2007. White is interesting. He showed a lot in little game time...but is another Hyde IMO.

You are probably right. I also think that it is the 'mates' factor. The idea that mateship is almost number 1 ingrediant in a successful footy team. I think a lot of the AFL decision makers have never worked in another industry and think that 'team' is a far more fragile concept than it is. You get stories of Mark Williams refusing to attend trade week for example.

I agree. There does seem a huge fear in making a mistake. You make decisions then you will make some mistakes. Only way to avoid mistakes is never make a decision - which is the AFL motto.

Cut Rodan. Sure he might go on to star - but make a call. Stop giving guys 6-8 years to prove beyond any shadow of a doubt that they aren't up to it.

(What the hell were we giving Tommy Roach extra time for :thumbsd: )

If he isn't prepared to do the work then cut him for someone who is prepared to. No point keeping a Xavier Clarke type around for the 2 games a year he feels like playing. If we are going to be good we can't carry passengers.

Also I think there is going to be a lot of competition for spots on the wings / flanks which is why Meyer might be in bother. Casserley, Oakley-Nicholls, White, Connors could all go past him.

I don't rate Hall but I'd keep him around until someone shows that they can do his job.

Schulz has done enough at Coburg to suggest he needs some time in the 1s. Polak we all have our fingers crossed.

Moore, McGuane and Hughes haven't done anything yet at Coburg to justify keeping them on the list ahead of Hall. I have never warmed to the idea of giving a guy games just because he is young and untried. If one of them shows something by all means Hall can go - but until then he is worth keeping.

because they still laugh when hall fumbles out of the backline or when tivendale starts in the centre or when krakouer still gets games, and then when we draft kent kingsley

plain and simple
We picked him up in the preseason man. We didnt lose anything to get him on our list. He will have a good season you watch, and even if he doesnt, what have we lost? Kids are the future, but you cant have 44 kids on your list!

Your the kinda person that will be calling for us to trade Deledio for picks when he turns 25, simply for the fact that he is no longer "a kid".

Get a grip.

chris hyde should not be on that list. was drafted in 2000 delisted and redrafted in 2001. a hard worker who gets the best out of himself. its a shame others didnt work as hard as him. but is nothing more than a foot soldier and is expendable. at 25 you have to wonder how much improvement is left in hydey. he is one you would hope one of our kids displaces in time.

whoops clicked on the wrong quote.

Rory Hilton was a top bloke, i remember he came down to Bendigo and we had a competition to see who could get the most goals from the toughest angles LOL if i remember we neally won. The day he was delisted was sad :(
