Opinion Our Midfield

Our #1 got completely towelled up by a kid playing in his 2nd season, Ollie Wines.. The most concerning thing about watching footy over the weekend was that there is just so many super talented 19-22 year olds running around, its just none of them play for Carlton.

Based on comments across the board seems many are expecting Robinson to drift into fringe/depth territory - I'm tipping top 5 BnF. On the flip side lot of overrating of Bell across the board - will have his moments but has a way to go to just be considered a solid contributor.
We will have a very disappointing year if this eventuates...

Robinson doesn't even deserve to be called a midfielder. He hacks the ball onto his boot any chance he gets, even at the goals straight in front.. No composure, no poise. Hard at it for sure, but a lot of players are hard at it that actually also have skills (or at least show them)

Let's get Crippa, Graham and Bell further up the rankings please. Like to see Temay debut in the midfield as well.

For the future we should be looking at Docherty and Menzel playing on-ball as well.

I was impressed with Curnow last night. Showed great pace and kicked 2 great goals.

What I still don't get with our coaches/development staff is how we cannot drill into Robbo some composure into his game. Love his brutal attack on the footy, but he undoes alot of his good work because he simply cannot kick consistently. Would not surprise me one bit if he's not part of our best 22 by years end.

I have thought about this often also HBF, He is either not getting the feedback required or he has an inability to take it on board and change his behaviour.

Either way there is serious concerns and I just will not believe that he isn't getting that feedback.

Or you could approach it in a more brutal way. Tell him he won't be selected again until he gets these clangers out of his game. We simply cannot carry someone like him anymore. In fact, the game has all but gone past him.

Would love to see Cripps, Graham and even Menzel all given serious midfield minutes in the seniors. Get games under there belts and with Cripps and Graham being inside mids free up Murph for the outside!

True, have never been a huge fan but have certainly admired his bravery and attack on the ball, but what you do with the ball in hand is important to your ability to score and defend.

If it gets coughed up with regularity as seems to be the case often with Robbo then it throws out your entire team defense or ability to defend and cover players in transition as we are caught well out of position on the rebound.

And guess who handballed backwards to Watson midway thru the last Quarter with a Port player waiting to pounce on him...............

And that handball would go down as an effective possession, some are saying that he only had 5 clangers in 20 touches which in my opinion is far too many anyway but they also dont factor these instances in.

The running shot for goal is another example, goes done as an effective possession or behind when it is just as damaging as a clanger, so deflating to the psyche of the entire group.

Yeah we seem to have couple of good ordinary battlers in our youngsters but no futures stars.

Le Menzel disputes your claim but he was twiddling his thumbs on the bench for 3 and a half quarters. Plenty of hope for Graham and Cripps as well if our development rises to the occasion.

Agree re menzel. Absolutely wasted yesterday. Is he going to be a gun midfielder or more of an impact fwd tho? I hope its the former.

Judd is still our best mid. Only one we can count on to stand up and drag this team over the line when it needs to be done. Sad state of affairs.

I suspect his early games will be up forward while he builds his fitness up to play in the midfield. Already runs both ways at the moment which is a good sign. Has the size, hardness and skill to play in the midfield.

Agree with all that. I guess the comparison is he Will be 3rd season before Being damaging whereas guys like wines played 22 games in yr 1 and is a genuine top 3 b&f chance at his club in his second yr. Our young guys never seem to make that immediate impact.

Port have had better draft picks then us though. Menzel was unlucky with injury in his first year which limited his immediate impact as well. I actually like the look of Graham ( reminds me more of Luke Ball then Mclean) from the 2012 draft. Temay doesn't look like a bad footballer either although he is a year or two away from aiming for a best 22 spot since he lacks size and consistency (good patches followed by quiet ones). There is also a good chance that Holman or Cripps could be best 22 by the end of the season if they play well enough since it's only rd 1 mate.

Overreaction.

They have Wingard when we had pick 22 due to the GWS concessions.

Jacobs was a bust who left for nothing.

Wines and Menzel were in the same draft.

Rest of their players are nowhere like looking at GC and GWS. They have players who you can write them down as a first or second round pick in the draft.

Polec and Ebert came from other clubs.

Pittard, Moore and Butcher haven't smashed down the door like Fyfe.

I meant that they had higher picks then us. That was all I meant by my comment. We also have better older players then Port which is why our kids were immediately thrown to the wolves.
