Yeah you would but you wouldnt get Congilio at Carlton for $900k , GWS,Hawks,Saints,Dogs & Eagles Can all pay that and he is not from melbourne so it would need to be a bigger amount. Try $1.25-$1.35

Yeah righto mate. Hawks I'll begrudgingly give you though I disagree but youre taking the piss with them other two.

‘If’ Congilio wants to leave GWS, you can bet your bottom dollar, we will be in there with 1 decent bid. Just like Richmond and Lynch.....

Saints could easily fit him in their cap , During the draft it was mentioned they are one of the teams that have the most cap space of just about any side
But thats besides the point he would either stay or go west for a million - Offer would need to be bigger (Even Polec is getting 750k)

We will be front loading the whole list soon

Mate, we've been banking cap space for 4 years now. In that same time period, we've lost Gibbs, Henderson, Rowe, Yarran, Jamison and others that would have been on reasonable coin. Thomas has taken a pay cut, and Murphy is on no-where near the same cash he was on a few years ago.

We're paying Cripps top notch coin. Also Charlie would be on some good money. Docherty, Kruezer, Murphy, Ed and Simpson (and likely McGovern) are also on decent wages.

Who else? The rest of our list is nearly wholly comprised of 1st-4th year players who havent (yet) set the world on fire, and even then they're already been locked away on frontloaded contracts already (intentionally done in order to create a massive hole in the cap over the next year or two).

Also, Murphy, Thomas, Kruezer and Simpson have approx 2 years left (max). There is a very conservative 2 million P/A in those 4.

We can easily bring in a couple of elite or A grade players over the next few years as trades and F/A on frontloaded deals without blinking, and still have tons of room left over to ward off the inevitable F/A offers that Cripps will be getting in 2 years time from the WA clubs, plus resign all our kids.

We've been planning for 'Phase 2' (switch our focus away from the draft, and go all in with trades and F/A) since we started this rebuild man.

We just need to convince those elite and A grade players to come. On field improvement is vital, but so is frontloaded 'overs' in terms of $$$ on the contract.

Thats just the nature of the beast.

I thought we could only bank money for 2 years?

Not denying we should have some money but everytime I hear of a possible recruit we are apparently going to front end the deal like we have with Charlie McGovern Setterfield Weitering Cripps etc

Dont change your argument. You said he wouldnt go to Carlton for $900k but Saints and Dogs could get away with offering that as if they a better destination. Laughable.

I dont think he'd choose us either outside of a godfather offer but to suggest he'd go to Dogs or Saints on market value is ludicrous.

Collingwood, Richmond then Hawthorn.....
Hawks were higher than the Tigers , Richmond the lowest at $950k and pies highest at ($1.25 8 mil over 6 years according to sen)

* Also Fairfax
"Fairfax Media believes that Hawthorn’s offer for the former Sun captain was greater on an annual basis than that offered by the Tigers.

Didnt say he would select the other teams over the blues , Perhaps could have been worded better
What i meant to say is that all these teams could put an offer around the $1.2m range which would mean that he would have to select the blues due to either love or loyalty which doesnt exist between Blues/Cogs but he would either stay at GWS or go to eagles for less

Maybe even the Hawks if the bro love Jom & Cogs is true as the hawks supporters keep telling us exists

Cripps is the best mid fielder / footballer in the league, hopefully your powers to be surround him with decent support which helps prolong the career of a true champion of football.
Hi fellow Dragon.

Agree, Cripps is the best mid in the league.:thumbsu:

How much money do you think those guys are on exactly?

Cripps is on good money (close to a million PA), and Charlie OK money. Gov is getting a nice amount this year (then it goes down next year and the year after). Weits and Setters wouldn't be on more than average wages.

Mate, were paying 95 percent of the cap (largely on front loaded deals), and can afford to go to 105 (and a lot of that front loading expires this year as well meaning wer likely to be paying around 80-85 percent of the cap in 2020). That's before we factor in retirements and delistings.

We should have 2-3 million spare each year, this year and next.

If it takes offering Kelly 2 million a year for those 2 years (then 1 million a year for the next 3) then we do it without blinking.

I have no idea what people get paid or how it works. I was just interested that every time a recruit gets mentioned people say we can front load their contracts.

That’s all

Just remember Dow and O'brien's contract extensions kick in next year, which will take them off the base draftee wage.

Then you have Walsh and Stocker the following year.

If their payments increase by say an average of 300k each, that's adding $1.2mil to our salary cap.

This needs to be considered when talking about trading for a Big Fish.

When you look at teams like St Kilda and North Melbourne, they can afford to be more frivolous when recruiting a Big Fish as they don't have as many talented rookies on their list. This means they can expect/anticipate fewer players to receive a substantial pay rise in the coming seasons.

I think some focus on the dollars / salary cap space but as you note the on field improvement is just as important. I suspect it is very difficult for any club that finishes in the bottom 4 to reel in a big fish FA. Unless we make a significant step forward this season this is no chance of attracting a gun player.

Lobbe,Simpson,Casboult,Thomas will all be gone by then and thats probably close to $2 mil that will be released

Dow and Obrien are already locked in for 3 and 2 more years respectively. We had to use our 95 percent of the cap minimum somewhere.

You'll find the same across the board with all our kids. We even had the room to renegotiate Cripps contract by pouring a ton of cash in to convince him to extend by a year to take him up to F/A.

You should expect Walsh and Stocker to be locked in on 2 or 3 year extensions each (in addition to their initial 2 years) over the next few months as well.

Mate, we have a ton of spare cash to throw around. We've been planning on this for 4 years, and managing the salary cap to enable us to have a lot of space over the next 3 years.

To say we will be active players in FA and trade week this year is an understatement.

It's vital that we show enough on field to convince those elite players and FA to come. Money isnt the issue
