Our Most Important Player

Michael Johnson is an interesting one now, maybe not our most important player but a 195cm All Australian who's about the perfect loose man in defense and now mature enough to fill a given role as well. Certainly not one that can be replaced like for like.

Not saying he isn't important, but we did pretty well without him against the Cats in the QF. In fact our back line did remarkably well without Johnson, Ibbotson, Pearce and McPharlin playing his first game in 8 weeks.

We won plenty of games last year without Pavlich, Mcpharlin and Sandilands, beat Collingwood and Gold Coast without Fyfe etc... Really we're a more balanced team then ever, and if Gumbleton and Sylvia come in as strong as we're all hoping Freo is going to have even more depth this year.

There's a pretty large core group where our team will always be weaker with any combination of them out but Freo can now cover anything but a horror injury run pretty well and I suppose 'most important player' is just a good idea for a preseason thread cause imo we just don't have one most important player.

Great thread which has confirmed for me that we not only great depth, but also that there is no single player whose loss would shred our chances. We are facing some big potential changes. Mundy to FA. MacPharlin, Pavlich and Sandilands to ol'-bugger-hood (wonder what their bf usernames will be?). Those are difficult things for any club to cover, but we will cover whatever happens and move on.

It's just a crazy good time to be a Freo fan, for so many years we've had definite most important players and half a team that couldn't stand out in the wafl. The proof will be in the results (and there's still plenty of prediction/unknowns) but this year we could have as much depth as any team in the league and a good number of fringe players who are absolutely AFL ready.
