I would take Ken Hinkley in a heartbeat.

Not gonna get us a flag. But if you told me we would have him for 5 seasons from 2026-30 I would take it if we have 2 finishes of 5th place spots in 2026-8 which means 3 years we get Elim finals wins then 2 years of 9th to 12th and flick him after that then yeah.

Or if Ken Hinkley hangs around for 12 seasons and gives us similar finals success like he did at Port Adelaide from 2013-24. That is 3 or 4 preliminary finals and 5 or 6 finals wins in 12 seasons, then I am keen for that stability.

Ken for the season as caretaker.

He'd probably enjoy the freedom of leaving Adelaide and a free hit at a flag.

I’d much rather get a flag and then have 5 years of mediocrity if that’s the price to pay for actually winning the damn thing I’d take it. Simmo over Ken.

You keep banging on about being satisfied with a few elim final wins and maybe making a few prelims and it's ****en stupid.

Whats the point of even supporting a team if you don't care if they ever win a premiership?

Ken Hinkley won't be slaughtered by the local media on a daily basis here

Yes he would be.

Anyway, I think we have to go the first time coach route again. It's where almost every premiership comes from, rather than a recycled coach. If we can't poach a top tier coach at the top of their game again, ala RTB in 2011, then it's the best chance of striking gold. You run a higher risk of striking fools gold too aka JL, but its a better bet for winning the ultimate than going for a safe option with a low ceiling aka Hinkley.

We went the first time route with JLo, and it hasn’t worked out.
There are two premiership winning coaches available right now - Longmire and Simpson, one of them lives in WA. You are not a serious club if you aren’t at the very least picking up the phone and ringing them.

Simpson's personality is too similar to JL. We need a contrast if we're going to change coaches.

Longmire is the only currently available* coach I would look at.

*Assuming he'd be interested.

I guess the difference between Simmo and JL is two things - Simmo’s messaging is clear, concise and he doesn’t mumble. Secondly he’s won a flag, he knows what it takes. Genuine question, if the choice was between Simpson and JLo right now to coach this list, who are you taking? Potentially if you go down the first timer route, get Simpson in as a senior assistant then?

I agree, Longmire would be my first choice, he is the one I’d throw big money at, but I’d happily have Adam Simpson coaching this list over Longmuir.

First time coaches are high risk high reward but they do deliver the majority of flags. You shouldn't abandon that option because we struck out last time around.

That said you're right it would be unserious if the club didn't call up two recent premiership winning ex-coaches. Basically we need to cast a much wider net than we did last time and leave no stone unturned in order to find the right guy.

If you do down the first timer route, at the very least get a senior guy like Simpson next to him as a senior assistant coach. That may also appeal.

He still has similar mannerism and coaching philosophy. He's a better communicator no doubt. I think it's important that the players can see the change. If you're trying to break bad habits etc the last thing you want is the new voice being reminiscant of the old one.

I'd take Simpson over JL, but I'd rather get a first timer than Simpson if we're moving JL on.

I do like the idea of Simpson as director of coaching or whatever though with a new coach.

Preferably someone who has not overseen any period of the clubs 30 years of failure, and definitely nobody involved in the current football program. That rules out Graham, who would likely be JL lite anyway.

Identify any successful football program in the past few years and work from there. We need someone with an edge who is going to drive up the standards.

And please no more defensively-minded coaches. 13 years of defensive sludge and an inability to score has made me feel completely jaded as a supporter.

This is the one for me, if he’d come after we flicked his mate JLo.

From what I’ve seen, he’s in a much better mental state than he was at Collingwood. But only if he still has the fire.

Yeah that’s the issue with Bucks. I don’t see any way he would come to Freo if we turfed JLo given he’s such a huge fan.. maybe a big pay packet? My gut feel is he’s being sounded out to be Tassie’s inaugural coach.

Because we are a long way of that elusive dockers premiership.

I would tolerate a couple of Elim final wins for 2 or 3 years in a row over the current garbage of falling short or underachievement under Justin Longmuir.

Did you enjoy freos 2023-4 seasons? I didn't .

Making Elim finals to me is progress. Finishing 9th or lower isn't progress for a team expected to make finals and top 4.

At this point in time, as a long suffering Dockers fan since 2001, I want Hinkley.

Yeah we might fall short but at least he can make finals and win finals with this squad.

Again.... I am happy to remind you about freos finals history from 1995 to 2024.

8 years of finals out of 30.

-2003
-2006
-2010
-2012-5
-2022

Made finals in 2012-15 under Ross Lyon. Only time freo had a sustainable finals run or made back to back finals.

I wished we made finals in 2005 and 2021. That means back to back finals In 2005-6 and 2021-22.

If we are gonna be crap for 30 seasons, I want a few periods of finals eras where we made finals for 2 or 3 years in a row to look back on.

You don't spend 5 or 6 years in a row in bottom 4 then win the flag just after that, it just doesn't work that way.

We traded a fair bit to get Shai Bolton to get us a flag. We won't even make finals

Yeah a first time coach could work. Justin Longmuir is going ok.

Hell Mark Neeld worked out well for the demons in 2012-3. LoL

Again... I won't mind Ken Hinkley handing us 2 preliminary finals in a row like Port in 2020-21.

Anyone wants to trash Ken Hinkley. Well he has had a decent finals run from 2013-2024.

6 finals wins in 12 seasons. Dockers have got 7 finals wins in 30 years.

Port has got 4 preliminary finals from 2014-24. Dockers .... 3 preliminary finals in 30 seasons.

Let that sink in.

Port has finished top 4 only 4 times from 5 years from 2020-24. Dockers have got top 4 only 4 times in 30 seasons.

Again... Let that sink in

You have different ambitions to most other posters here. You seem resigned to the fact that Freo will never win a flag and are content to just play finals. Everyone else here wants to aim higher.
