What are we thinking of or ODI team make up moving forward?

Finch and Warner should remain opening for the immediate future, however both are 33 and will probably not be a fixture of our next World Cup team (both would be 37). Trying to name their potential replacements leaves us with nothing but speculation and conjecture, as their retirement is probably around 2-3 years away. I think it's more productive to talk about our immediate future, rather than crystal balling too much.

Therefore I'd love to get everyone's opinions on our ODI side moving into the 2019/20 Australian summer.

For me it's:

Finch
Warner
Wade
Smith
Handscomb
Maxwell
Carey
Cummins/Pattinson
Starc
J. Richardson
Zampa/Lyon

That leaves us with only the one all rounder in Maxwell (who I'm not fully convinced of) but personally, it doesn't bother me too much. I figure Maxxy can bowl at least 6 and the other 4 can be made up by Smith, Wade and Finch. Maybe if an all rounder presents themselves over the summer (dare i say Mitch Marsh, perhaps?) then they could easily replace Handscomb.

But that would be my 11 starting off this summer.

Thoughts?

It should be treated as a 2-4 year cycle building up to the World Cup/Champions Trophy.

My best XI
Finch
Warner
Smith
Carey
Maxwell
Turner
M Marsh
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Peripheral players that should get opportunities through rotations:
D’Arcy Short, Chris Lynn, Peter Handscomb, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Agar, Billy Stanlake, Jason Behrendorff, Michael Neser

World Cup members I would say goodbye to: Khawaja, S Marsh, Wade, Coulter-Nile, Zampa

Selection smokies (guys that could get a gig if they show form): Weatherald, Harris, Heazlett, Lehmann, Green, Burns, Labuschagne, Phillippe, Faulkner, Harvey, Sangha, Pucovski, Bell, Tremain and Pope.

Matt Kelly should rate a mention ahead of a lot of bowlers listed there. Genuine death option.

I think we should look at injecting some youth into the squad at least; especially with the bat. Stoinis should definitely be moved on and Maxwell just can't be relied upon. I like the look of Bryant, Philippe, McDermott and Heazlett as good options.

Based on our previous history and general approach we start planning for the next WC around now.

I can't see Finch + Maxwell + Warner + Lyon in the team in 2023, so i'd say Finchy and the Big Show are on borrowed time.

Carey/Turner/Cummins are the future we'll be building a team around them.

Not saying this is what we should do immediately, but with a focus on the next WC this should be what we work towards.

Ben McDermott
Chris Lynn
Darcy Short
Peter Handscomb
Ashton Turner
Mitch Marsh
Alex Carey +
Pat Cummins
Mitchell Starc
Jhai Richardson
Adam Zampa

The next WC is so far away its not really feasible to start talking too much about individual players.
And there's no real hurry to force players out ahead of their time yet. That said, Stoinis had his run and isn't up to it.

Any trial and speculative type picks should be with the WC in mind, but not necessarily trying to shoe-horn people into slots this far out. A couple of the players thast make that squad will barely be in Futures League yet, others who are currently looking very good will fall away, and some who look mediocre may well come good in the format.

As players young enough earn a spot, give them a run. If they fail, there's time for them to come good and get another go before worrying too much about trying to select provisional squads. But there's no need to rush people before their time, or force too many out just yet.
We have to hope at least two spinners come good, rather than the zero that has been the case in LOI for a long time now, it is in India.

Why would you replace Khawaja with Wade?
I simply don't rate Khawaja and his WC campaign proved he isn't up to it. Wade's form has been pretty damn good for quite a while. I think he slots in to the ODI squad this summer for sure. As for how long he maintains his form remains to be seen.

Pattinson and Cummins have never been good ODI bowlers and that is what gets us into trouble - reliant on the magnificent Starc to take all our wickets. Behrendorf, Richardson etc need to push into the side.
I kind of agree, however I don't think Dorff is really up to it. Definitely think J Richardson should be a lock, provided his shoulder is ok.

Another solid one day cup from Heazlett and then I'd love to see him get a few games soonish. Averaging 54 atm.

Going nowhere and the lads know which one are going to be chopped. haven't thought of any myself because they are all
slanting on the level of 'who needs me'.. and 'they are going to chop me' and all language is left to a rude utterance..

Cummins Avg 27 In 50 something games fair effort Pattinson not a great white ball player tbh Cummins is differently in our Best 11

Disagree. He was ordinary at the WC yet kept getting games over Behrendorf who played better. For a guy who was selected on T20 (albeit he was getting spank wickets not genuine good ball wickets) he doesn't have any death bowling nor variety or control.

I'd be backing Cummins in to succeed at anything he does, but what I really like with Behrendorff is his effectiveness in the early overs. With the way ODI's are played now an early wicket or two is just so vital. In theory Starc also plays this role too though so for me first choice lineup should be Starc, Richardson (presuming he's back and fit) & Cummins with Zampa as spinner. We'll see how Maxwell and Stoinis bounce back from terrible world cups but they should remain in the mix along with Mitch Marsh as well.

I actually agree with this. I think Cummins is a little too one dimensional at the moment for the modern ODI game.

Shame about the Dorff, sounds like a Pattinson situation which at his age probably suggests a future confined to continuing as a T20 specialist.

On the positive, I only saw parts of the WA batting innings but appeared decent figures for NCN and Agar with the ball. And is nice to see all of Bancroft, Maxwell and Stoinis return to some form after a few tough months :) Daresay we may see Phillipe in the national ODI or T20 shirt before the summers out too.

Yeh I agree here I feel as if Phillipe should go through the T20 format starting against a team like Sri Lanka possibly one of the weaker international sides I reckon his ready
