Ben Robbins 181cm... Ashley Watson 181cm...

Hmm....

Dunno that we were screaming out for short midfielders.. A midfielder with good size and speed would have been preferable. But then what do I know?! I wasn't too impressed with Watson in the TAC - ok speed but thin and short but yeh again, just my opinion..

Pretty wrapt with Hale though. After I got over the Corza/Lindsay thing, I guessed they might have been looking at this bloke. Maybe they feel he will be superior to Lindsay in the long term? Imagine if he's half as good as Ottens!

Foott is surprising, he didn't look that flash in the U-18 GF.

Hey Roowatch - what's the scoop on Crowe? Good mark? kick? This draft more than most, I'm reading all about a guy's athletic traits and very little about his football ability!

It'll be interesting to see how our picks pan out.
I think the whole thing is very hit and miss - our best draftee last year was probably Corey Jones, who was taken with our last pick.

It was probably wise, I think , to pick some key-position size players. I think that it is this area that will become a deficiencey in the next few years as our current key position players are getting nearer to retirement.

We don't really have any young good key position playes, I think they've tried to address this very problem.

Salmon evolved into a ruckman and Ottens probably will too.

But the fact is that they are more than compatent in these positions and the only reason Salmon became a ruckmen is because he had the desire to be one and Ottens probably will because Richmond need a ruckmen and enjoys playing there. Hale has played forward all the way threw juniors and the fact that we have Burton/Porter/Petrie already will mean Hale will be played where north want him to play, which will not be in the ruck unless of injuries or just for a short amount of time during a game.

living on the gold coast i've seen david hale play around 3-4 times , and he is very mobile for a big man , a very big kick for goal , kicked some big 70m goals
needs to put on some weight though , played under john northy for broadbeach , mainly changing from full forward - ruck

If he grows another 1-2 inches (remember he is only 17) there is no way he is going to be an effective key position player the way the game is played these days.

OR

He could be an absolute freak of an athlete and prove me wrong.
In which case he should have taken up basketball instead and earned sqillions taking on the likes of shaqeal oneal.

Don't forget that Corey had played a year in the SANFL already, so could be expected to develop a bit quicker than the others. Although he showed promise this year I doubt if he will end up being the best 2000 draftee in the long term, as Harris, Smith and co start to step up.

Speedy shut up,

If he is 17 and 200cm its more likely that he will fill out than grow taller, you have no idea who this kid is but the club does obviously they see some future with him

Whether you like it or not no amount of whinging will get him off the list

Benny Robbins eh...

Add that to Calthorpe's recruitment and I think we're now just about all-square with yous after that '99 Prelim. ;)

I'm glad to see it still hurts... and it nowhere near makes up for missing out on a premiership...

Crowe is good overhead. He plays a very aggressive, physical game, using strength to advantage. Not the greatest kick in the world. Was a terrfic asset as a team member in Vic U.16 squad.

Good point Hurricane, I hope you're right.

Jones was a fantastic pickup - he's got some nice skills and is pretty fearless. If Smith and Harris end up being better players I'll be very happy :D

Could you liken him to Archer and/or McCartney????

Speedy,

Did David Hale steal your lunch money at school or something?!

You seem to really dislike him!

Now I have nothing against some healthy dislike. In fact there is one recent recruit to our club who is the son of the legend who *****s me to tears.

But Hale sounds good!

As mentioned, Salmon was over 200cm and a gun forward earlier in his career. Ottens is 199cm and a very effective forward. Ball stands around 199cm and was a premiership forward in 94. Alessio (200+cm) won a premiership playing forward. Spider Everitt has kicked 10 goals from full-forward and stands clear of 2 metres.

If a player is quick and has that kind of height, I'd have thought that'd excite people - ESPECIALLY - if they're not a one-dimensional ruckman!

But I do accept your skepticism. I guess we'll only know in around 3 or 4 years whether it was justified..

I thought we drafted ok, the only worry I have with Hale is that he will want to go back home..interstaters are just a huge risk, I prefer sticking to the local talent.
I still think Daniel Harris was the best of last years talent, Corey Jones has nice skills but Harris will be a engine room player for years to come...a Ratten or West type of player.

Go Roos in 2002

I'm over it now.
You get access to player profiles and all of a sudden you think you know more than the experts.
I'm sure Stibbard and Co. know what they are doing.
