These are the guys recruited from 06-10 in the draft that are still on our list, everyone else = gone:
2006: Leuenberger
2007: Polkinghorne, Hanley
2008: Rich, Redden, Rockliff
2009: Harwood
2010: Lester, Green, Beams

Plus the exodus of all our good draft picks pretty much since 2011 (except Mayes). It's no wonder we're not looking good. Apart from 2008, we've been rubbish at the draft. Here is hoping the 2013 draft will be another 2008...

I tend to look at our drafting as pre-2008 and post-2008. When you add Golby and Beams in 2009 (rookie draft), and the fact that we had no first round pick that year, it looks a little less depressing and a bit more "league average". Before 2008 we were striking out so often it was horrific.

They have taken steps to improve the NEAFL and our development spend. Hopefully that starts to pay dividends. Personally I would like to see Canole moves aside. Last year looks fine but I have not loved he and Kerr's draft table work since he was promoted.

Maybe our recruiting is Ok...but our development of these players is less than desirable. The NEAFL is not a good enough testing ground for our youngsters.
I find it remarkable that we have the highest ratio of players that cannot kick semi-precisely on regular basis.....Golby, Merrett, Clarke, Lisle, Polkinghorne, Lester....I'm sure there are others. Have a look at the worlds best practise..The Hawks...All of them can kick, no exceptions.

I remember someone, might have been Kerr, can't remember, mentioned that the average pick that players on our list was about 30-40 something. That was when Kerr made the aim to get 3 picks inside 30 for a few drafts to try bring down that average, and get some higher pick players, on average, on our list. For the most part, he did exactly that.

TBH the go home 5 have affected us more than I thought it would. Injuries certainly have not helped. But Funnily enough all of them would be getting a game on Thursday night. I think our drafting has been above solid without killing it. The retention of players is what has brought the overall rating down.

Swans youth is having no problems and they had to play weaker sides than us more regularly in the Eastern NEAFL. Yet the Swans are the leaders when it comes to drafting/trading in mature players maybe the poor reserves has been one of the reasons why they do that.

The old argument that because the Swans do it then we should be able to do it. The Swans would have almost unlimited resources to put into player development, sourced by the AFL of course...we don't. It's not just the NEAFL that develops the Swan players. It's also ludicrous to suggest a lower standard may develop the players better.

There's more to player development than what you do at the training track and what program your multiple coaches have set you on. You still have to play reserves and improve your game sense, skills under pressure and show the ability to stick to your role all of which can't be bought with money. Which is funny since you said it's not just the NEAFL that develops players yet on the other side of the coin it's not just money that they get from the AFL either ;).

I never suggested that playing in a lower standard will develop players better/faster just that they play the majority of their games against weaker opposition than we do (I don't know if that's the case. I just assumed that the standard of footy is lower in NSW/ACT than up here in QLD).

Without GWS/GCS/Melbourne concessions over the last few years we would have had access to a lot better picks, and our 1st round pick would have had a lot more value if we wanted to trade in an quality experienced player. For a club with little F/S opportunity and little to no high rated kids from the area we have been hit the hardest by the domination of first round picks.

It's safe to say we could have snagged an O'Meara, Patton, Cameron type at some stage if we'd just been given a chance. The GWS/GCS picks should have been a bit more staggered to allow clubs down the bottom at least some chance of snaring a real top 5 players or their no 1 pick actually holding some value. As it is our pick was worthless at the trade table because GWS/GCS could offer more and we had to sit behind them and take whomever they didn't want in the draft.

The club has made some poor choices recently and we need to look inwards to resolve these problems however it's worth considering that we haven't had the same privileges when trying to rebuild as the clubs who were in this position 5 - 10 years ago had.

It's amazing how shitty a teams kicking can look when team mates aren't working hard enough to break free from their man and provide an option. Watching Port on the weekend, how many times did they work free from their man and a team mate would just kick a little 30m pass for them to run onto. You can move left or right if you have space and it makes the kick look a lot better than it is. It's not hard to kick 30 - 40 metres into space for your team mate to run onto it.

Heard Dermott on radio recently talking about the resources the Hawks were able to put into recruiting that unveiled gems like Breust, Suckling etc.

They put significant additional funding into scouting other sides reserves and rookie lists as opposed to TAC cup - History would say that it paid off. That's really why our financial predicament will prevent us from ever challenging for a long time.

They also scouted smith from some country footy league which they then had too convince him to enter the draft I thought

Smith played in the VFL with North Ballarat after being recruited from Redan in the Ballarat League after coming to Ballarat for Uni from Cootamundra.
