Do we have the best rookie list in the comp at the moment?
Hendo and Atkins both in or around our best 22.
Okunbur looking promising.
GWS rookies look ok with Mumford and Reid the experienced ones.
Maybe Richmond has the edge with Stack, Pickett, Baker and Chol?

We have potential improvements in our depth on the list, it’s a big call to say we have the best rookie list.

there’s a lot to play out but I like the balance of the kids on the list atm

I’d love to have Stack and Pickett but I think our list overall rookie included is shaped nicely. There are some spots such as a developing ruck which would be ideal. But we’ve got a list to compete now. And a good collection of players to develop or who are developing.

Our rookie list is good. We have a few players who are serviceable afl players on it. Only thing I would prefer is a developing ruck and maybe a small forward to develop

There's always a chance we could draft a young ruck mid season if we lose one to injury I guess.
I think we have a few small forward options already.

Has Pickett played a game yet?

I remember when Jack Viney first came on the scene as an alleged tough guy....decided to show David Wojinski a thing or two...

That didnt go so well for him....eating through a straw for a month puts things into perspective.

AFL football is a whole new ball game.

Pickett as the player who was a contempory of kelly , drafted mid year by richmond and who was close to BOG in the GF? I think he has played one game but it was a good game...

The best rookie list? ... I guess if we have a group of 4 players that manage to play a game in the afl in 2020 ..we will have done well with our selections ..id think other clubs would have players that will play games. Henderson is a funny one..we probably hope he is not required to play.

I fear in a couple of years time we will look back and be able to say ..why didnt we pick this young 200 plus ruck .. admitadly thats a 20/20 rear vision type situation ..and it would have been easy to fail ..like we did with Read a while ago. So I can only hope we have some sort of plan to redress our long term rucks. Clubs like Freo seem to cover theirs much better ..they have had Sandilands for years but still they drafted multiple rucks..

Maybe, but who exactly was this young 200 plus ruck?
I'm assuming we looked, and came up with a list of zilch.

It was, but the footy world is littered with one-game wonders.
Marcus Baldwin?
Anyway, I agree he's made a good start and it's entirely possible he'll do a Kelly at Richmond.

For sure no one obvious for our eyes ... thats the issue ...but would we have said Close was out there or Evans... there are players that could be given a shot. Yes they may fall short and may not work..in which case you have to go the trade method. As it is atm... its seem lets skip even the attempt of trying to develop a player. Go back a couple of years... did the club consider Rowan Marshall? He was a rookie.

Baldwyn ... a long bow there I think on that player... but your point is correct... there have been planty of players who played out of their sock in the first game for a club ..and never reached that standard again. Was It Metropolis for the Eagles? Even Mark Jackson I think had his best game for Geelong in G1.
If I were to guess however I think Pickett will offer them plenty to justify his Life Membership

Dek... may or may not be the guy...its handy that he is over 200...it does give us some options ..but its also a little bit of a positive/negative that he has not played the role when younger. He might play as a ruck like he is a mid ..he may also not like the role. Truth is .. i think they have put money down on more than just one number in this spin of the roulette wheel.. and being such and early pick id hope they have a specific role in mind rather than..lets just see how it pans out.. after all he is no rookie pick.

To say the club didn’t recruit a 200plus ruck project is wrong

The fact that he might be good enough to play another position is why he went inside the top20

Sure he might not be good enough at afl level but that’s the draft. The real problem is we won’t know if he any good for 4 years. Sean Darcy still has question marks over him going into year 4 with only 20 odd games

I would think this only a hindsight thing.

The team that has the best rookie list at the moment will be the team that ends up with a 200 game player from it.

For us Henderson and Atkins should be on the senior list and two of Parsons, Zuthrie and Simpson should be delisted.

So yeah while our rookie list is good as far as AFL ready players goes it is only that way because we muffed the senior list contracts.

Ideally the 2 guys I mentioned should be on the senior list and we should have an additional 2 rookie spots to try and jag that 200 game player....

I dunno, "jagging" a 200 gamer through the rookie list seems like trying to kill mosquitoes with a dart.
I actually think we use our RL differently to many clubs.
We seem to be using it to manage and balance our list, rather than just stacking it with "spare part" players.

Im happy with my opinion that he was recruited as a backman. with the advanatge of height so he may be able to do other roles...

Name our specialist small forwards and compare that number to Richmond. A lot of very good small forwards have come from the rookie list throughout the league
Why would l want to compare everything Richmond are doing ?
They beat us with a 199cm CHF; do you remember a guy named Lynch?

I really loved the rookie list management we had in the 2016 offseason.

We went from having

  • Read
  • Lucey
  • Bates
  • Delaney
  • Cornell
  • Parsons
  • Ruggles
To
  • Parsons
  • Simpson
  • Henry
  • Zuthrie
  • Jones
  • O'Connor
Imo it's the kind of stark improvement very rarely seen in footy. How many times have Carlton attempted a clean-out and just wound up with fresh chaff?
