Our Ruck Division

Well it seems most of you have seen something in Jamar this year that I have missed.

I will pose another question.

Can Gawn or Spencer lock down the number one spot post Jamar or do we need to trade or use a high draft pick to find his replacement?
Jamar has been alright this year. It's hard to say whether the problem is he's hitting the ball to nowhere, or our mids are too crap to get to his taps but I think he's been better than most of our players (not hard though).
I think long term Gawn would make a good no.1 ruck, however he isn't ready yet and probably won't be for another year or 2. Spencil is alright depth, nothing more. Don't think he'll be getting the gig. I'd say trade for an experienced ruck, even if it's a Ben Hudson type situation where he's only around for a season to ease the load on Gawn; drafting a young one is too risky.

Just another indication of how much we take Jamar for granted.

He's ineffectual because we have a VFL midfield.

Meanwhile, the above are not AFL standard players. West only looks it because of the midfield he's tapping it to.

Dear Mrs Jamar,

Mark's inability to offer us anything around the ground, to take contested marks, to impact the scoreboard and be a genuine presence has absolutely nothing to do with our midfield.

PS: I hear the Gold Coast is a lovely place for the aged and infirm , perhaps you could mention that to him next time you speak.

I've always wondered, what if you just didn't play a ruckman and had an extra rover instead. Ruckmen can't take the ball straight out of the air these days because of the HTB rule. With an extra player you'd be able to cover opposition midfielders. Still a chance their ruck could get it out to one of their midfielders, but this happens when you're playing with a ruckman anyway.

Obviously this would never work, but it's the kind of scheme I like to cook up on BigFooty so that I'm prepared when the Dees give me a call and ask me to be coach.

Bailey actually did this on more than just a couple of occasions by playing Dunn at the centre bounce ruck contests when Jamar needed a breather (when he didn't play two rucks). My verdict of what transpired at those centre bounces: extremely embarrassing. ;)

Why are we having less than total faith in Max?

He's having his first real season now after spending time developing his game both on- and off-field. He's hulked on big-time while he was out with his knee. He can tap. He can play. His kicking at times is the only gripe (and let's be fair, any person that big will struggle with ball drop due to sheer size). He's going to be number 1 if not next year then the year after.

Haven't you guys been listening at all? Clearances are useless because Geelong sometimes lose them yet still win matches.

It's the child-who-missed-out-on-the-toy syndrome... someone else gets him and suddenly we all want him. MUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMM, IT'S NOT FAIR, I WANTED IT FIRST!!!

by no means I think he would be another Jeff White or even a number 1 ruckman, more a solid option for us at this present time and with jamar's descent into his 30's, the extra years left in hannath by the time jamar goes would fill a gap for a few years in tandem with gawn compared to spencer, who I do not think should ever be considered to play afl senior football.

He's not what he used to be, but he has taken the second most contested marks of any of our players this year. Which is not saying all that much I concede.

Maxy Gawn is the man for the job. **** trading for a ruck, we need mids.

Just don't waste energy on trading for one of the only positions our club has been able to manufacture in house!!!

Mids will be good next year with Daisy, M Jones, N Jones, Evans, Howe, Grimes, Trenners all lining up.

Jamar will be the man till the end of next year, while Gawn learns the craft and how to jump into people.
I also think that long term we will see Mitch ruck a lot more and provide us a mobile option. If Hogan comes up as expected then this will release Mitch. He would be a great mobile ruckman who can take marks around the ground and go forward.

I think Mitch needs to play a consistent year or two before he gets more than a token go in the ruck. He isn't staying on the park, ease him in.

Yeah you are spot on.. i think for his confidence he needs to string some games together, can be hard when you lose faith in your body. I just hope that Neeld doesn't rush him back in a bid to help Neelds career.
