Opinion Our running defender conundrum

Judging by the noises coming out of the club we will see the four talls played regularly on the basis that Kolo plays on a small.
Won't surprise me too see that happen, however for me it makes us too slow and tall and robs us of run/rebound from the back half.
Those 4 listed in the back 6 will require our midfield to apply some serious pressure for 4 qtrs to limit the effectiveness of the opposition forward entries.

Just how tall is tall now I wonder. In this age of 190+ type mids ...is Mackie a tall? Is Kolo?

But no matter what I can see a lot height down back , they may not play as talls but they will not be short.

Give me strength. Fair to say I'm sceptical of it being successful.

I'm not necessarily a fan either, but I can see it happening since:

1. They want to get games into Kolo yet we have spots sewn up by Taylor, Lonergan and Hendo.
2. We lack a quality small defender and they seem to 'rate' Kolo more than they do other main option in Bews.*
3. The noises that he's working closely with Scarlo and in particular on being able to play on the 'Eddie Betts types'.

*Unknown: Ruggles may emerge as a stronger contender if he plays and plays well against Freo

Hope that's just white noise with no substance to it, if it happens on a regular basis, especially round one, I'll seriously consider joining the "lynch Scott" brigade, a back six containing all four would be a disaster, seriously can't see it happening regardless of whatever noises the club appear to be making.

Would be putting it mildly to say it's odd that 193 cm Kolodjashni is possibly being considered for a "small" defender role, the fact his two worst games have been in that role makes it even more bizarre.

Cant see the 4 tall backs playing together much either. Especially Round 1 v Hawks smalls.
The point you are pushing about Kolodashnij missing out (i agree with you he should be a regular) was raised on here when Henderson was drafted .
Will be very interesting too see how selection unfolds as i have a feeling the MC feel obliged to play Henderson but still want to keep Kolodashnij in the 22.

As I say above, just can't see it happening myself, surely the MC wouldn't go with such an unbalanced setup simply to squeeze one player in there, although the last point you make does give cause for concern.

Reckon you're showing great restraint in merely being skeptical. ;)

Think we've done this one before Cattery. Not sure it will end differently without more facts on which to judge.

We need Lonergan and Enright to do 6 week calves.
That's what we need.

Yeah shoot me.

Because then we'll find out if we have what we need to win the flag. And yes, Thurlow has hurt that.
4 talls? For gods sake.

Jono Brown said it best on commentary on the weekend.

All thought he was in his last year in 2015 and was going to retire. Finished the season so strong that he convinced himself to go around again.

Wouldn't even be slightly surprised if he was again amongst our best defenders in 2016.

And I did say 6 weeks :)

Oh that doesn't sound good.

Was just hoping you'd seen the light since then. :D
I'm reserving opinion on Kolo as a small until I see more. Hendo I'm confident but only time will tell.

I don't think that's unreasonable.

Why exactly?

He's here because he deserves to be. 17 games. That's the number that matters to me. 17 games.

He has been defying gravity for a while, no doubt. But no way is he a worry for us yet.

If a few weeks convinced him to do another 40 weeks of work, I don't like it.
And no, ian deserves to hold the record.

Don't know how he does it but I struggle to see at present how we'd cope without him in 2016. Those other small defenders we have all have big ??? over them, Thurlow excepted.

Of course we'll have to get used to it in the future, he won't be here forever.

Well then you won't like it then on both fronts.

Mentioned at times last year he was approaching 2015 as his last year. Then bam, 2016 contract. Something swayed his thinking.

He stays fit and he'll be our record holder and I'm sure quite a few of our many members would say he deserves it.

Not at all.
I'm not convinced but am willing to reserve my opinion on Henderson, will be stunned if Kolo makes it as a "small" defender though, perfectly suited to the Rivers type third tall IMO.

Agree that he's well suited to a Rivers role and in 2017 in sure that's where he'll mostly be used.
