in 2011, when I believe we will seriously challenge for the flag, our spine looks pretty good:

FB - Martin
CHB - Warnock/Garland
C - Jones/Grimes/Petterd
CHF - ???
FF - Watts
R - Spencer

CHF is the glaring issue here, and hopefully we can find someone to make that position their own.

Chuck in our quality youngsters Blease, Strauss, Morton, Maric, Bate, Jurrah, Buckley, Cheney, Jetta, Bennell etc etc and a few veterans who should still be playing good footy in a couple of years (Green, Davey, Bruce, Rivers, Beamer etc) we have to be confident of doing well in the not too distant future.

It might take a couple of years, but we've got the nucleas of a very, very good team on our hands.

CHB: Garland/ Rivers/ Frawley
C: Jones/ Moloney/ Grimes
CHF: ?(please draft John Butcher this year)
FF: Watts
R: Johnson/ Spencer

Damn good spine if you ask me, and alot of talent to fit around that too.

Are we getting carried away with Jurrah considering he was the no. 1 pre season pick (and although had not lodged paperwork in time) probablywould not have fallen till much later in the national draft if he had done so. Can we really expect that he will be a gun if we had have drafted him at say no. 60 in the ND?

You would hope whatever position we finish, and whatever first pick we have, we will pick a key position given the focus we seem to have had on smalls in the previous few years.

So while not getting involved in the 'tanking debate' - Buthcher would seem to be a decent addition to the club to complete a youthful spine.

yeah butcher or mckenzie (i think), plus a daniel rich type with pick 2!!!
its as if we got our timing perfect to become shit and then rebuild in the perfect year. hate to be richmond with about 15 of their players over 30 with GC17 coming in

To picks1and2: your user name is a F@cking shocker - don't give us a bad name please. We aren't Carlton.

Sure, if we have a terrible year and finish last, picks 1 and 2 make it a little easier to swallow.

But no supporter should be hoping for another year down the bottom.

mate i've been going to the football since 1985. ive seen it all. i went to the 2000 granny , 2002 loss to adelaide in the final and i dont wnan put up with anymore of this shit. if its what it takes these days to get ahead, well ill easily suffer through another year to take full advantage of the system.
free country dude!:thumbsu::):cool:

Watts is more of a CHF than FF IMO.

FB: Martin
CHB: Warnock
C: McLean
HF: Watts
FF: Jurrah

I know I'm putting a lot of faith in Jurrah but he could be ANYTHING.

It is a free country mate and I am in the same boat to you. But right now I just don't want to finish bottom again this year. If we are 2-16 after 18 rounds, then I my mindset might change. But as it stands, I don't want to tank after round one.

Not every premier has made it to the top through bottoming out - look at Geelong, Sydney etc.

No one plays with a CHF these days anyway, it's about mixing it up. But what you do need is probably 4 or more players who are capable of kicking 4 or more goals on any one day. Plus it helps to have 2 of them being big units who can take a contested mark when needed. I haven't seen Jurrah play but his 3 goals on the weekend was a nice sign. However both he and Watts aren't built like Franklin and Roughead were when the entered the game, so I'm expecting 2011 might be a bit early for them to have reached there full potential.

Backline looks great but I'm not sure if our midfield has the potential needed to become elite. I want to see more of Morton, Blease, Grimes and other players like Bennell and Jetta as they (MIGHT) move toward the midfield. Not sure the McLean, Moloney, Jones, Bartram, Buckley, Morton combination which is our current midfield minus the old timers in Green, Bruce and McDonald is up to it.

not the old look other teams not bottoming out excuse. for starters the AFL handed sydney their flag and i can say look at hawthorn, look at what carlton are doing now. How'd ya be if we were like north and richmond and just finish mid table every year. Sorry to say but this is the system.
dont think of it as tanking after round 1, think of it as a 2-4 year rebuilding phase, with total domination and a new winning era for the melbournefc

i know its not on the subject but watt do u all think of sylvia in defence. he clearly cant be arsed playing in the forward line maybe he should go back. he's a nice kick, could be our quarter back hodge style

Unfortunately I don't think that Brock McLean is the man going forward into 2010, 2011 and beyond, for that important pivotal role .
He is just too slow, as was clearly and painfully evident against North. I mean, other sides have guys that just speed right through the centre. Harvey for North , Mitchell for the Hawks, Cas have about 5 of them, we have no one.
The Dees have a need for speed. Opposition sides must find us easy to play and match up against, for the fact that we don't play a fast brand of footy.
Thats the way it is, we are just short on talent in teh speed takes.
If Flash Davey was a slightly stronger build, he would be perfect in the middle.
The rest of your picks down the spine look ok.

Lets be realistic to start off with, I think the dees can win 3-4 games this year with the young list we have. I love the dees and always have and I hate the losses just as much as the next guy but why on earth would we want to win more than 4 games and miss out on the top pick. We win 6 games, who cares and we miss out. We need to be smart and use the system to our advantage. If we get the wooden spoon this year, yes it'l suck bigtime but in 3-4 years when we have a team of talent that can threaten for a flag I think those few hard years will be worth it. Your right about some top teams not bottoming out to get back to the top, but we have bottomed out massively and have no choice. The difference between not getting those top picks will be massive. I don't care about wins at the moment, I care about rebuilding and watching the young kids develop. The club is finally on the right track on and off the field.

this thread went nicely off track
do we need to have this debate again.
You play footy to win, first game last game, 4 wins or 18 wins.
You play for the jumper not for draft picks

The Dees have a need for speed.

Sam Mitchell a speedster. Now I've heard everything.
Cats speedsters. lol.
Out of all their guns Gablett is the only one.
Bartel, Corey, Chapman, Selwood. No speed found here. They are however quick in the head.

Try again champ.

If we go all out to get Roughead for FF position, together with lead up half fowards that we have already, add Watts @ CHF, all the players that look slow now would suddenly gain an extra yard.

Why are you so determined to get Roughead? i highly doubt he is going to leave premiership winning hawthorn for us.

You guys are kidding right? 2011 is a bit far fetched you guys are easily 4 to 5 years off even challenging for finals.
