Needs to be dropped from our playbook.

Continuity only works for players who are in their prime. They can back up 22 weeks in a row and be consistent over the course of the season. They've banked enough preseasons to have fuel in the tank and a hardened body.

The kids haven't. They'll need breaks here and there, even if they're going ok.

The oldies are typically a bit banged up after years of punishment. Still plenty to offer but will need refreshers.

So as a rough guide
Younger/newer players: Strategic rests
Guys in their prime: Continuity
Older guys: Strategic rests

Now, this may sound like kindergarten stuff but for the AFC it is an unfathomable concept.

The beauty of it in a rebuild is that those strategic rests can be used to usher in new players and give them a taste. It keeps kids up for the whole season instead of burning out. It extends the quality output of your veterans.

It's win-win.

Continuity has done more damage to our club than Trigg and Burton and the Camp combined

The worst thing is we only ever apply it when it comes to senior players.

Whether it is Jacobs "thriving" on his heavy workload (read playing injured every week) or "you tell Thommo he's not playing". Lynch not training for weeks but still getting a gig was straight out of the late-career Ricciuto playbook.

Meanwhile we select guys like Gallucci, Davis and Murray only to drop them after their debut.

We're not rebuilding. Every selection decision is about this week's 4 points, there is no other factor that enters the discussion. We'll be even more focussed on the now after yesterday.

Yeah, this is exactly it. Young players you are trying debut/develop will significantly benefit from continuity, the senior players on the otherhand become support pieces. That's not to say the senior players aren't important, they are, but not to the extent they get played week in, week out no matter what.

Nah you have this all wrong.

Injuries or rests are perfect opportunities to bring back experienced players that have never been good

Continuity is great when you've built the group that's about to contend in the top 4 for the next 3-4 years. Continuity as a mid table team is poison. You need to be prepared to drop a few spots chasing the improvement required to rise a few spots. We're still fixated with the Neil Craig philosophy that a bunch of ordinary players can be the best team if they just keep working harder and keep playing together. The quotes from Nicks in the Advertiser is frightening reading. It's almost like he did his entire apprenticeship under Craig. He actually said individuals don't need to do more or be better, the team just somehow needs to improve. It was weird reading.

Even as a contending team. continuity destroyed our finals run in 2017.

That and completely ignoring any personal issues bubbling under the surface, seeing how quickly we ended up pointing fingers at one another during the grand final.

No doubt. But I think that it works as an overarching philosophy. And we hadn't built a 4-5 year top 4 contending group, we had 1 year with a soft draw where we won enough to finish 4th nearly every other year. Pretty sure we earned more points in 2016 and finished 5th, which was the norm. And we lost the same way every time and we didn't try and improve at all.

They've gone for the short term sugar hit, rather than building for sustained success.

Trying to win games and get near the 8 with an underbaked group of youngsters before they're ready and oldies with one foot in retirement who can barely train during the week.

Yep, we're not rebuilding under this senior coach. People assume that if you finish bottom then you're actively rebuilding. We haven't made a single selection decision that prioritises the future ahead of perceived 4 points benefit.

And yet we threw out the 2nd most inexperienced and youngest team in the league on the weekend (Gold Coast pipped us at the post in both facets by 3 months and 0.6 of a game). I'd say that safely constitutes an actively rebuilding side. Especially factoring in that we're yet to dip below playing 14 players below 50 games at any point this season.

There are things I'm critical of, namely dropping Fogarty and selecting Mackay, but it's an overreaction and a half to say we're not actively rebuilding at this point in time. It is very difficult to not be, given the state of our list.

That was by necessity. We simply don't have many uninjured senior players. But every single one we've got is getting picked in the 22 every week.

Difference between choice and necessity though. How many available senior players weren't played?

Just some clarity as to where we are at the section table... And then you can continue to discuss 'continuity'...

Round 7 - Number of Players Selected who have debuted in 2020 or 2021...

10 - Adel
5 - Coll, Nth
4 - Bris, Ess, Frem, GC, GWS, Haw, Melb, Port, Syd
3 - Carl, Rich, StK
2 - WB
1 - Geel, WC

You were up and about banging on about wins earlier. Now we're losing you've turned 180 degrees.
What? I never once said we are a finals team, all I've ever said was I see an improvement in the group with excellent youngsters coming through. And that I see a game plan and Nicks has shown he can or is willing to change his game style during game day......and you call that "banging"? That's just stating the facts.

We need to Strategic Rest ROB after the next two games.
However...I’d love him to defer this by kickin’ Puffer arse and NicNats.:drunk:
We should try using Frampton as a lead ruck.
