If he leaves for more money is that a non-loyal act?

I mean, he has stuck with the club during lean years but is it the club or him at fault if he chooses to leave for a massive contract?

Neither, I think.
I think if Rockliff leaves, it is certainly disloyal on Rockliff's part. FWIW, I hope Rockliff remains at the Lions, irrespective of receiving a fancy "draft pick".

Go back to 99-04 and pretty much every player put the club before their own personal gain, monetary or otherwise.

It is quite sad if this is the norm that a player leaving just so that they can get heavily remunerated is justified with a supporter base.

More credit to the likes of Daniel Rich for remaining a one club player.

Yeah, pick 2 for Rockliff wouldn't be worth it.
Only if that pick 2 turned into a ready made player , you have to ask can the club afford to go backwards to go forwards ?
We are already on the bottom and quite frankly another year at the bottom and we'll see the positive outlook in the club being tested.

Hypothetically if Rocky goes and we have a few injuries in the midfield area , we could be regretting this trade.
It's not hard to project D. Beams not playing all games next year or the next.
As some have said it might not be the Clubs decision at the end , but I would hope the club would regard him as a player we might pay overs for considering our young age and the fact they need older heads around.

Sadly, player loyalty is now non-existent & so is club loyalty. Don't think for 1 minute that almost ALL players on our list would not be traded if Noble & Co think there is a better opportunity to win a flag with another player/players. Whatever Rocky decides to do, supporters should be OK with the service he has given the club over his stay in Brisbane. I would prefer him to stay a Lion rather than move to another club to finish his career, BUT if he does he goes with my best wish's. I believe the offer Brisbane has given Tom is fair. What he decides to do is his choice. It was mentioned on 360 earlier in the year that the average playing career of an AFL footballer is 6 years. That being said, players need to do what they feel is right for them because I am 100% sure that the club will do the same.

That is a very different scenario - if we were still winning premierships, or even making finals, I'm sure we'd have a lot more players lining up to put the club before their own personal gain.

It is quite sad if this is the norm that a player leaving just so that they can get heavily remunerated is justified with a supporter base.
If you got offered a 50% pay rise to move to a competitor to your current employee, would you consider it? I know I would and I feel uncomfortable holding people to a standard that I would not consider for myself.

Daniel Rich has been handsomely compensated, and probably earned more with us than he would have with another club. Is that really loyalty?

FWIW I'm more than willing to continue respecting a player leaving for a pay increase than I am one leaving for homesickness.

As much as I would like to keep Rocky as well as bring in some high performing recruits, I don't get too invested in the comings and goings of high paid players. They are the lucky ones when it's all said and done. I do get emotional when good blokes have their AFL dreams shattered by serious injury or by being delisted.

I don't begrudge him leaving for money - I just want him to stay.

If he goes I'll wish him well and hope he wins a grand final but I'll still hate it when he plays against it.

I also hope Tom stays at Brisbane and is a 1 club player. Will be a good example for our young team.

This is mythology and is laughable if not for the fact that you have said it and more so that you believe it. Every Player? Many tested the market at contract time and improved their Lions salaries as a result. Which was their right to do so. Have we forgotten the angst about Bradshaw shopping himself around every two years, have we forgotten Leigh and Gubby having to travel to Powers' home get on their knees and beg him to stay and the only reason he stayed was for a monster five year contract. Browny tested the market regularly and even by his own admission he was on the verge of leaving. There are more examples but the Mythology of Player Loyalty is bullshit, just as Club Loyalty to a player is also crap. Let's not mythologize and turn these guys into Gods. Normal people like you and I who will consider many options before committing to a contract. Including money above other matters such as loyalty to a club. What loyalty do you have to the delisted players just announced? Where is your loyalty to a good club servant like Harwood or a F/S like Clayton. Don't they deserve some club loyalty or is that reserved for the Special Ones?

If we can get pick 2 for Rocky the paperwork will not get signed quick enough. That being said we are not getting pick 2 for Rocky. No one is paying him over 800,000 a year.
There was an article the other day that suggested 700k would be enough to net us pick 2 as compo. Not sure it sounds right but there would be a couple of clubs prepared to pay that you would think. Especially considering that our offer is believed to be around 650/yr over 3 yrs.
Here is the link to the article. Last paragraph.

“If they get a first rounder for him — if he gets up towards $700,000 a year the Lions get Pick 2 — I’m pretty sure the Lions would be happy to let Tommy go,” Brown told On the Couch.

Just read an article re Carlton chasing Devon Smith from GWS and expecting to pay $550k. At that rate I reckon Rocky would be worth >$700k. My suspicions are that the Lions have offered Rocky sufficient such that any other club's successful offer would fall into Band 1 compensation.

My personal preference is that Rocky remains.

Considering the lack of big name players available in FA and how many clubs are cashed up and ready to grab someone, i find it very easy to believe Rocky will get offers pushing a million a year. FA get a premium, because clubs need to pay that lil bit extra to entice them away, and clubs are prepared to pay it because they get a high calibre player with no trade cost.

It is a free hit at getting talent onto your list, and if you have the cap space why not? This will be the money contract for Rocky, 3-4 years and he will probably earn more on it then nearly the rest of his career. Even for clubs not in the finals race like North, it makes sense to chase them. They have cap space to use, they can probably front load his contract and get him across without causing cap stress on signing young players.

Didn't he also say pick 15 for Schache?

I think we're all just gathering proof that Browny isn't list management material. :)
