Even with Rocky and Beams hampered in the second half of the season; we actually ranked 3rd in the AFL for centre clearances and 8th in the AFL for clearances around the ground.

For mine - a brilliant effort from where we've been ranked in previous seasons :thumbsu:
Always felt that our clearances were rubbish in quality compared to the opposition though. We win it it's scrubby and rushed, opposition win it and they waltz out with plenty of time on their hands.

Exactly this. I would like to see the "clearance to hitting the opposition on the tit" stat.

Wanting to move on Rockliff because "he is 27 and won't be part of our next premiership" is a terrible plan. Whilst I'm all for him having a chat to other clubs, we should match the offer and hang onto him. Rockliff is a known quality, vice captain and has shown a huge amount of love for this club. Rockliff has plenty of great football ahead of him and the younger guys are only go to reach their potential by trying to push him out of the team.

St kilda based their rebuild on 3 picks in side the top 20. We have that this year plus we had 3 inside the top 25 in 2015 and 4 inside the top 25 last year. We don't need to let go of a key player for another draft pick. We just need to keep the players we have drafted and keep our top end talent and be patient. The next couple of years are going to massive as our young cubs hit their straps.

We were 10th overall for clearances but 18th for contested possessions.
Stoppages were a problem - ranked quite low, taking our overall clearance ranking much lower.

With contested possessions; I'd suggest most of the differential would be from F50 and D50 where our players are much younger / smaller and often pushed off the ball.

I don't think we are that bad of a side when it comes to stoppages and clearances, however we often aren't able to capitalise on the good work we do when we do win them. We lack the outside polish or the break away ability. But i do think there is potential for improvement in those areas on the list already. We do lack quality midfield depth, but hopefully after this draft we should be pretty good. The clearance and stoppage part of the game is still an area where as a team i believe we perform much higher than what we are rated ladder wise. More and cleaner clearances will result in more goals for and less goals against. Could see the tide change pretty quickly in this area in the next 24 months i think.

Rocky is one of our better ball and clearance winners, but he isn't damaging with the ball. If we lose him, team wise i think we might drop back 12 months, but TBH i think we can cover his loss pretty well. Matho can pretty much play the Rocky midfield role of tackles and just contested ball. Similar strengths and weaknesses to Rocky, good inside, not much chop on the outside.

What people aren't thinking about here is the cultural expectations and understandings that all our younger players are forming as this situation drags on. Why worry about being loyal to the club as it is obvious that they sure as sh#t won't be loyal to us even after 10 years service!
In a Hawthorn system the player with longevity and loyalty is rewarded. HENCE strong culture! WE have it all WRONG here! This will be the start of another disaster. I lived through it at Fitzroy with trading PERT and Blakey and then the player group fractured. Our small signs of stability will be eroded with this and we will lose young players- most likely starting with With and Lugga next year. How good will we look then???

We must stop this cycle!
I understand the point you're trying to make, but using Hawthorn as an example of loyalty being rewarded given their trade period last year is a bit rich

The thing to remember when discussing how effective he is, or our team's ranking for contested possessions, or even defensive traits is that both Rocky and Beams have just played the majority of the 2017 season with shoulders requiring surgery.

It's a bit average to suggest he's not all that when Rocky and D.Beams have effectively had one arm tied behind their back in terms of full potential for most of the year.

So Fagan asked Rockliff to play out the season with a shoulder that both the club and Rockliff knew required surgery, all the while Rockliff had a contract on the table that he believed didn't reflect his value.

Now Rockliff is out shopping himself to the highest bidder.

Not sure if there is more to the whole story, but how many players in an out of contract season would play on and risk a career ending injury, without assurances from the club one way or another.

Fact: Yes, Rocky was asked to play out the rest of the season carrying a shoulder injury. (injured it against Hawthorn in Launceston)
Fact: Rocky's shoulder injury was never a potential career ending injury. I can assure you that no further damage to his (existing) shoulder injury could occur while playing out the rest of the season.
Fact: Rocky did not have a contract tabled to him midway through the season. (good or bad one)

Not having a medical degree or knowing anything about the injury, the bolded section is the bit I am iffy on. But, not having a medical degree I'm in no position to discuss further.

He was lucky when it popped out that he suffered limited ligament damage. Once you dislocate a joint it's a known issue of possibly coming out again and with that risk comes the chance of further damage.

Barrett seems to think he will be at Port or Carlton and 0% chance here. Don't know if it's legit or not because he is a squib and has history with Rocky
That's because we're not broadcasting a running commentary on unfolding situations....he's getting nothing... so he's reporting nothing

I don't have a medical background either. Just quoting what was said to me by Rocky himself about 6-7 weeks ago.
In saying that, I do think our club's ethics/credibility would seriously be questioned if they asked him to play the season out with an existing injury that could end his career. Furthermore, I would be stunned if Rocky agreed to play knowing that he would jeopardise his career if told that his shoulder injury might stop him playing permanently.

No way he plays risking permanent damage.

Good luck to him, last year I wanted him out, this year I am ambivalent. If he goes there is a reason, this will be his last big, long term contract.
