Really BK? That is pretty poor if they did do that. When you think about it they are being "employed" to do a job & if they aren't doing a good job people are entitled to have a say. When you think about it, players & supporters are the people who are paying for them by making there ay through the gate every week!
Very good points you make there BK!
Yeah, I don't have the record on me at the moment so I can't post exactly what was said, but I think it was something along the lines of stop criticising, and an invitation for "us" (i.e. the posters on this site) to go down to umpires training to have a go at it.

Yes Bk , im not sure what happened but Bright turned the switch right off and we managed to get the score even with about 3 mins to go so there were some tense moments as both teams had the ball in fwd 50 during this stage but fortunatly it was us who managed to sneek through the behind that mattered whith about 20 seconds left to play. It made for a pretty good night it would be fair to say !
Sounds like one of those matches that players hate to be a part of with some nerve racking moments late in the game - very similar to our season opener against Milawa. Milawa were five goals up in the last but threw it away as Bright did. Encouraging signs for the Moyhu boys and it must give them confidence knowing they can fight back from a fair deficit.

Perhaps BK the umpires board would be happy to allow clubs to fill out umpire report sheets that addressed key aspects after each game [ like the old days].

Ha, I couldn't see that going down too well slim! Umpires at all levels sometimes think every little comment about them is a negative one, whether that is the intention or not. (Shit, does that mean they are going to think this post is having a go at them :confused::confused:)

Look, in general umpires do a good job and it's obvious that without them we wouldn't have a game. I just think they need to be able to take any feedback on board and cop any criticism on the chin - as players/clubs do week in, week out. If they aren't prepared to do so, then maybe they can employ Milawa's tactics and stay away from this forum :p

My prediction was correct :D

I will be looking forward to the Bright/Moyhu rematch this weekend, hopefully it's another tight encounter. Virge can you provide a quick rundown on how the match finished? I heard there was a shot after or close to the final siren. Bright must be pretty disappointed in only scoring two behinds in the final term.

I expect Milawa to be far too strong for Glenrowan, wouldn't be surprised if they dropped out in straight sets.
Not as disappointed as us Greta boys!!

Just on Milawa boycotting this site - has any other club seen Milawa after a game in their rooms for a beer?? On Saturday they only had their runner (who is a brother of one of our reserves players) and a netballer who is originally from Greta hang about. The rest disappeared. I thought that the league had a pretty good standard with teams hanging about after games to have a beer with the opposition - is this a one off - or has it happened elsewhere?

Tarra to be the run away winners this year - they have done what they needed to all year and in the last month have really put their foot down with some very impressive wins. I think that Milawa will win against Glenrowan and Bright to beat Moyhu. I really don't think that Glenrowan will go out in straight sets - they will beat Bright and push Milawa (who will lose to Tarra in week 2) in the next final. Tarra v Milawa GF with Tarra to win by 5-8 goals.

Conversly BK they could join in [ as nonch did] and help to achieve an outcome. Players, technically, cant speak to/ question them on the ground and you dont see them after the game and its difficult to meet with specific umpires unless you know them personally. Any other thoughts???

I'm all for that slim, it was only tongue in cheek saying they should stay away. Just on that though, I've found most umpires easily approachable during and after the game for interpretations on rules etc. We've had the umpires hang around for a drink after the game on several occasions this year which was good to see. Anything that improves the player/umpire relationship has to be a positive :thumbsu:

I see the umpires hit back at the criticism coming from this forum in their umpires report in the weekends record. I'm not having a go at the umpires here, but surely they must realise they aren't above everyone else. This is an open forum where people discuss anything related to our league. Players, coaches, officials and supporters are commented on weekly, so the umpires aren't alone. I've heard many umpires over the years comment on players and their performances, so it does occur both ways. Umpires are being treated like anyone else, so surely they can't complain about that.
I think it's called "contructive criticism" BK. And you're right, they should be able to take it on the chin, listen to what people are saying, learn from it and implement it.
It's getting to the point where the umpires think they have to make a decision and pay a free kick at every contest. Well they don't. If it's blatantly obvious: pay it. If not: let the play go. That's what everyone wants.
As Sam Newman says time and time again: "It's not the ones you don't pay, it's the ones you do pay that pi$$ people off".
People get over missed free kicks because the play flows. It's the stupid ticky touchwood ones that stop the game and frustrate the supporters, coaches AND players.
UMPIRES: LET THEM PLAY FOOTY and if it is BLATANTLY OBVIOUS pay a free kick.
*Side note: one of the umpires on the weekend would've paid at least 80% of the free kicks in the senior game and copped it from both sets of supporters. The other umpire did a FANTASTIC JOB and I didn't hear any arguing from anyone. Just want it to be known that there are some really good umpires out there that can be proud of what they do.

TGN its that knobhead and his umpire bashing that give other knobheads the belief that it is open season on umpires. Other than that I agree with what you said.

He does cross the line with most things and is a bit of a knob, but I agree 100% with that quote.
If that makes me a knobhead, then I can deal with it. I don't think I was umpire bashing as I actually complimented an umpire. Again, he did a fantastic job. But as BK said, the umpires should be able to take "constructive criticism". And if they were serious about improving their standards, then having the coaches fill in a report with any issues/concerns or the areas they can improve would be a great idea.

Not having read the rules of recent times can someone answer this for me.

Is the non-controlling umpire able to call a free kick on the play that isn't paid/ missed by the conrolling umpire.... AND

Is there such a thing as a senior umpire out of the two on the ground who could over ride an incorrect decision by the junior? umpire....disregarding trainees...

I don't know what the correct ruling is, but on the weekend we had three umpires again and a couple of times a non-controlling umpire paid a free kick that the controlling umpire missed (most likely because his vision of the play was impaired by other players).

Is there such a thing as a senior umpire out of the two on the ground who could over ride an incorrect decision by the junior? umpire....disregarding trainees...
Again, not sure of the ruling but I have seen decisions get overturned by the other umpire. But on the other hand, the other week an experienced umpire paid a dubious decision and the younger umpire (although he wasn't a trainee) who I was standing next to chuckled and said that it was an incorrect decision. I queried him on why he didn't overrule and he said something like "C'mon, he has umpired hundreds of games and I have only done a couple. Can you imagine how well that would go down?". I found it quite funny but it just shows that he didn't have the confidence to overrule the more experienced ump.

Anyway, these would be perfect questions for an umpire to answer. If there are any lurking out there...

You guys see the Border today, O&M pushing Myrt to re enter merger dicussions with bright and form Alpine Eagles in all grades. Assume the new entity would play O&M.

Yeah I saw it slim. I wouldn't be surprised if that did happen given that Bright aren't happy with G'bat and Swapool joining our league. It will be interesting to see if they push for the merger to get fast tracked for next year, I would think most likely not though.

G/Bat and Swannie are both within 10=15 mins drive Nth/Sth of Benalla.Don't they have a fair few come up from Melb anyway, it would be closer for them
than a home game

Milawa and Bright would be favourites in the senior games this week, but how does everyone see the reserves panning out?
Glenrowan and Whorouly have been playing some good footy of late and the Tigers will have their whole list to pick from. Many players able to drop back JB?
Milawa missed the double chance at Greta on Saturday and will not want to get knocked out in the first week. I've heard they have about 3 players coming back from last week and will also have their whole list to choose from.
Slim, do the Blacks have many players that haven't "busted" their allowed senior games?

They'll have a full list to choose from and will be probably almost be at their strongest. Will probably have 3 or 4 come in who were out injured over the last couple of weeks......Quite a few of them played 5-6 snr games during the year at some stage.
