Corowa-Rutherglen is set to go into recess by the end of the week.
Roo officials made the bombshell decision at a meeting on Monday night which is set to have huge ramifications for the competition.
A chronic player shortage coupled with the clubrooms being off-limits for at least this season due to the health risks associated with the recent floods have proven to be insurmountable hurdles for the immediate future of the club.
The 'Corowa Cluster' which was identified a major issue to the sustainability of the neigbouring clubs several years ago was also significant in the Roos' demise.
With the club having one of the smallest population bases in the O&M but facing stiff competition from neighbouring clubs Rutherglen, Wahgunyah and CDHBU to recruit players and help fight dwindling playing numbers.
The ongoing issue always threatened to force one club in the area into recess but most people would have predicted that it would be a district league outfit before the club playing in one of the strongest competitions in country football.
Roo president Graham Hosier declined to comment when contacted by The Border Mail on Monday night.
The Border Mail believes the club wants to inform its members and players of the decision before making an official announcement on Friday.
It's hard to fathom how quickly fortunes have changed at John Foord Oval.
The rebuild under coach Peter German appeared to be gaining serious momentum at the half-way point of last season with the Roos in fifth spot with a 5-4 record.
The resurgent Roos had lost to powerhouses Albury by two points and to Yarrawonga by seven points to highlight their rapid improvement under German.
However a crippling injury toll in the second-half of the season robbed the Roos of any chance of playing finals.
They lost eight of their last nine matches with a one-point win over Wodonga Raiders, the club's sole win in the second-half of the season.
The Roos finished eighth with a 6-12 record and were on the lookout for a replacement for German after his decision to coach Perth in the WAFL.
Although the seniors missed finals, the Roos' thirds and A-grade netball who finished minor premiers both featured in September action.
Despite being flag favourites, the A-grade netball stumbled in the preliminary final against Wangaratta losing 33 to 31.
After finishing fifth, the thirds went on a barnstorming September run to make the grand final against Wangaratta.
Lavington Sports Ground was a sea of blue and white for the thirds decider as 100s of success starved Corowa-Rutherglen supporters made the trek to cheer the young Roos who hadn't won a flag for more than two decades.

Very sad read.

Maybe that’s other clubs plan, hold on until others in the region fall over and be the last standing

So now the comp will be a 16 round league. Surely this means the salary caps must change?

What does it mean for Players points from players who played at Corowa last year? Surely Cam Wilson doesn’t go to yarra as a 1 point player?

As sad as it is for Corowa this has a big effect on the league as a whole
As good a player as Cam Wilson is, I reckon he has made a big mistake going to Yarra. He will be at least a 5 point player as he won a club B&F and has transferred to another club in the same league. You wouldn’t think he would be getting a game in the guts ahead of the Wheelers x 2, Gibbons, Fothergill, Whiley. I know all those blokes drop a point but gee it was already getting tight towards the end of last year for the Pigeons.

Officials at Corowa-Rutherglen are targeting a reset in 2024.
The Roos released a statement on Tuesday afternoon addressing the prospect of going into recess caused by a mass player exodus.
With flood damage having rendered their clubrooms unusable and an 'extended timeframe' required for the rebuild, Corowa-Rutherglen confirmed they were 'increasingly unlikely' to field senior football teams in the Ovens and Murray this season.
"Player losses to this extent have never been experienced in our history, despite the sustained effort from the club football department to attract and retain players," Roos president Graham Hosier said.
"The club will continue to exhaust all avenues to play football and netball in 2023.

John O'Donohue dropped the one point penalty for moving within the league to assist Rovers cheat the system a couple years ago. Was a stupid decision at the time and this is what it's lead too. Wang and Yarra both poaching a player in Corowa's top 5 and not paying the penalty. Also doubt Muller would be getting his 80k from Albury if he carried the extra point

Has nothing to do with John O’Donohue.

The cluster report clearly outlined issues in the area and the 4 clubs have done nothing about it since the report due to ignorance and this is why the situation is the way it is.

How do you even go about starting a club again in 2 seasons? Not many clubs got into recess and successfully come back
Exactly no juniors, as they'll play elsewhere, the o&m say they are dumbfounded, a real head in the sand moment and a real club eat club feel about it. If you go from a lower side to a higher side you should be 4 points plus a point for every ladder position the side your going to is above your team. If Wilson and co stay maybe so do 10 other guys, once you see your bnf go, you know the clubs in trouble and more go as well

Unless the clubs in the cluster merge, there's no coming back from this, who can the O&m get as another club to join the league? Maybe mulwala or Benalla, but it hurts the league as well.

Latest news in interesting within the context of your prolonged debate last year with your number #1 fan Magnets! As i recall it was pertaining to community football and recruiting from within your own competition v professionalism. The potential outcome from predation/recruiting of one's own competitors was their ultimate demise.

Hmm. Who would have 'thunk' it!!

Jesus gyv, loosen your grip on it or it will fall off. Your beloved Wang have been poaching players from other teams within the league since Adam was a boy. They wrote the book on it.

To make a claim that a regional director altered the rules to allow a team to openly cheat is nonsensical, even for you

You still pissed from last september gyv?

Just a few comments on the Corowa situation.
Cluster . Do you choose to loose the top club in the best league , or the bottom? Both football and netball. Relates to opportunities to juniors with skills.
Money. Do you complain about a committee that keeps a lid on $ because they have a smaller community that has limited businesses, or do you spend and end up with nothing.
Players. The club has a serious history of providing serious players for both the football and netball club .
Community .
Mental health .
Facility : if 3 levels of government can’t rebuild CRFNC facilities ?
opportunity : ? Players of both football and netball need and deserve opportunity . To play at the highest level available locally .
Aging: play at the highest level you can for as long as you can .
youare retired for a long time ( I hope ) , dead even longer !
A few posts , very recent , bit sad .

Was a fairly commonly known fact at the time actualy. But you probably still had your mums T**ty in your mouth back then.

Point is when blood was in the water afew months ago, the rule should have been reinstated to give Corowa a chance of holding onto enough players to field a team.

Agree what's in it for Wang and Yarrawonga, having the league a team short

Proof, or it never happened. I’ll wait with anticipation for anything more substantial than ‘commonly known fact’ 😂

And am I hearing you correctly? You are saying that the league forced clubs like Wang and Yarra, who played off in the most recent grand final, to go and pick the eyeballs out of a club that was on its knees and fighting to survive like a couple of vultures?

IIRC , NEB the only region who didn’t drop a point for players during covid .

Longtime follower from a distance, few questions.

How did this happen?

Did German unsettle the playing group/club for this to happen?

Why did it take so long to appoint a coach when they new German was moving on 3 quarters of the way thru the year.

It’s a sad time for not just the community and members of CRFNC, but also all local football followers.

I hope they get in touch with Kyneton and Rob Waters who was the president for some tips in how to bounce back as Kyneton was in the exact same position around 10 years ago and came back well as a club.
