I agree of course that something needs to be done to 'close the gap'.
However, for this idea to work the number of imports allowed would need to be proportional to the population each team can draw on.
For example, Yarra have done incredibly well to be as strong as they have been over the past 15 or so years. However they would very quickly join the ranks of the uncompetitive if they were not allowed any more imports than the Albury / Wang teams, based purely on population.
As a side note, it's a pity (but a reality) that any measures introduced to even up the comp are based on weakening the playing stocks of the strong clubs with no guarantee whatsoever that the lower clubs lists will improve. In the AFL, if player X is squeezed out of Club Y due to salary cap issues, player X will still be playing in the same comp. In O&M (or any country league), if a club cannot recruit a player due to equalisation measures that player is at least as likely to end up in another league as at a rival club in the same competition. So while any new measures might reduce the gap between top and bottom, it will almost certainly result in fewer quality players in the O&M.
Aren't the AFL the GM of every league they are now affiliated with, so every league has signed over the power to AFL vic
It only works if it's done through the state, and there are more stringent rules in metro comps. You could have metro leagues need to play a minimum 18, 1 point players and go for your life on the other 4. Regional cities with unis 16, 1 point players etc. And allow leagues to give allowances in special circumstances. Not sure that helps though long term, as stronger clubs are picking off the weaker clubs. Maybe to go to another club in the same league it goes to a tribunal hearing instead of just getting cleared

It doesn’t even work in Geelong. No one can match St Mary’s, St Joeys and Torquay for junior numbers. No surprises to see them 3 clubs continually up the top in their leagues whilst down the bottom it’s the same each year for clubs like North Shore, Portarlington etc

This is the reason Wang are such a strong club at the moment. They have a really strong base of locals.

Ankers - Played footy with Newton and Bordignon in NT
McVeigh - Come with Clarke from Preston
Reid - Lives in Bright, chooses Wang because of friendship with Kelly and Grossman
They are the ring ins to the club that already have strong connection with players there.
Yes, obviously they would all be getting looked after at the club but already having a connection with the playing group before seeing a contract is key.
If you can sort out that local base first, become competitive while improving your culture and standards before adding top end talent then you will get sustained success. Clubs that think they can buy in players with little to no connection first, while forgetting their local players in the process, are absolutely kidding themselves.

No they weren't. All country leagues were put across to PlayHQ whether they liked it or not.

I spoke directly to a metro league GM and he said there’s no way they’re going over to it - it’s not ready.
Metro leagues haven't signed over the GM to the AFL, that's why they can choose, all country leagues bar picola have
The stand rule i believe was a league by league decision. Some league implemented others didn't. Yes they are part of AFLVIC

Every league bar picola in country footy used play hq, as the AFL are the GM for those leagues and it was forced on them, where many AFL employees are associated with play hq, no conflict of interest at all there, metro leagues haven't signed over control to the AFL hence why they haven't gone play hq
Stand rule was implemented as a rule of the game for which afl vic country didn’t attempt or gain an exemption .
country league(s) were encouraged to negotiate with gameday on return to using gameday if that was their wish .
When that occurred the AFL locked league(s) out of the clearance process and didn’t provide the league or its club the opportunity to reject any outgoing clearances.
So yea I guess you could say AFL Vic did give leagues the option to stay with gameday .
I agree about the NAB League but the VFL needs to stay. Clubs such as Williamstown and Port Melbourne have provided great opportunities for players to play at a higher level. IMO the Academies at U/12 level set the tone where kids walk away from the game because they didn't make some bs academy. The other issue is that country cities that have a Uni tend to diminish numbers from regional towns.
No reason a metro region or two couldn’t be part of the monthly senior matches.

Thinking outside the square could they play Netball on Saturday as well as the juniors who normally play Sundays? That would guarantee that they could still see people through the gate each 2nd week.

And it seems odd they didn't do what benalla did last year and put a call out to players. They haven't got a ground to use at the moment to play have they or at least any facilities at the ground

AFL Vic have gone with it and it’s a very poor system. Inferior to Gameday, which is far from perfect.

I read in today’s BM that C/R have also supposedly had a mass exodus from their netball sides as well, with only the new A grade coach Hanrahan staying across both B and A grade.
