over possessing?

the commentators had a lot to say about us over possessing in the first quarter. i don't believe that was the problem.

the problem was that the possessions weren't sharp. they were looped, floating and generally weak. it gave time for the hawks to get to our man before he got the ball and our man was looking through the roof, because the handball was floating in from high altitude.

a simple problem to fix.

all is well.

was just a practice match.

It was intimidation and pressure, actual or perceived. It was also the players consciously wanting to do the opposite of what Pagan would want them to do. Simple as that.

when you have 15 more handballs than kicks, it's over-possessing

We did over possess the ball, but it probably looked worse than it was because the Hawks put on lots of pressure and the disposal was generally pretty poor.

We nearly had 200 handballs for the game. That's way too many

You should have at least 100 more kicks than handballs

I personally didn't mind our overuse as I felt there was a lot of pressure and it's better to find shorter options that blazing long and turning over - they are learning and will get better at this style of play. Its our skill level that needs improving.

Our ability to finish off our attacking thrusts was frustrating. We dominated for the last 6-7mins of the third quarter and got 2 points (A Cloke easy miss and a Fev supergoal shot that he would normally get). We should of had 2-3 goals in this period IMO. We could have made it interesting with a bit more polish as we were easily the better (more intense) side in the second half.

On a side note - Did Murph hit a target tonight? I recall a lot - at least 8 - turnovers, plus two shots at goal that resulted in 1 point. Lets hope his form gets better over the next few weeks as we need him to be sharp this year. Also, how impressive was Gibbs - someone should start a post to discuss this point. He will clearly be a big improver in 2008 and will lightup the comp.

Didn't Geelong have 250+ handballs last week? I think they set some sort of record. Admittedly they do it a lot better than we do, but it is the way the game is being played. Players are running forward in a line, almost rugby league style, sharing the ball until they get someone in the clear. When well executed, it cuts the opposition to shreds because, similar to rugby league, there is regularly someone on the defensive side of the ball who doesn't cover their opponent & creates an opening for the team with the ball.

As stated above, the key to the success of this style is execution & at this stage our guys just don't have the skill level to consistently make it work. It is going to take some time to get to a level somewhere near Geelong. We will see some games this year where we do it really well & then we will see some games where we 'suck' at it. In the first quarter tonight, we really 'sucked' at it.

That was my point. We hardly have the skill level to be handballing 200 times a game

I'm guessing our players were told pregame to always look for options around them and use them as a way of encouraging the players to bring their teammates into the action, which in a NAB Cup match is fine but I'm guessing that when the real stuff begins player will be told to trust their instincts. It's not a big deal.

Another major problem was the decision making. Handballing to a team-mate who is "hot" creates turnovers and plays into the oppositions hands. Fortunately in the second half we started to run a bit more and find some space.

My opinion is that we are lacking in the skill of handballing without the reciever having to break stride. When they learn to pass to a spot infront, the game plan will work fine.

in all fairness i gotta say as the game progressed we did begin to get a hang of it.
But one BIG problem was the boys were continueously handballing it to players who had an opponent ON THEM, or close to them, but as was said only a practice match, and with practice we can only get better. No BIG lose.

Not convinced that we can play a game like the one they played in the first quarter. Our skill level just isn't up to it.

In saying that, blazing away and kicking long is not a good thing either...

We miss Walker's run from the backline. And our midfielders still run forward too often and don't run the opposite way.

Marc Murphy had 30 possessions tonight which included 10 contested possessions. I'd like to know how many targets he hit.

11 out of 15 kicks were effective, although it was one of the worse games I've seen Murph play disposal wise.

The thing that killed us in the first quarter was over-handballing, and horrid decision making. The contrast with Hawthorn was clear - whenever they handballed, they'd handball to a man who was in space and open up the play, or else go for a long kick. Meanwhile, we seemed to handball at every opportunity, and they seemed to handball to the first person they saw, regardless if they were 2 metres away under pressure or free. Not to mention sloppy handballs (that hospital hand pass to Murph by Grigg comes to mind).

Thanks for the stats.

Not sure what's happening in Murph's world at the moment but I'm sure he'll be fine.

Handball game a big no no

That amazes me. I wouldn't have thought he would have gotten anywhere near that amount.

Can anyone shed some light on how many of these were effective?
