Steak, like coffee & 'health bowls' (salads) have been marketed perfectly to sheep so those sheep pay over the odds for average food in order to look trendy...

Steak is trendy? You can get a cheap rump or a steak sandwich in a pub for $10-15, it's not exclusive. Alternatively you can pay top dollar for dry aged, grain fed whatever if that's your jam.

Coffee has a definite wank culture but everywhere you go it's only $4 a cup, give or take. It's not like people are paying $10, $15 etc. for exclusive coffee. Well not to my knowledge anyway.

I love a good steak(tomahawk, t bone or porterhouse) but only have it 3 or 4 times a year.
Im not paying top dollar to have someone else cook it either,I do it myself.

I dont pay for salads or coffee either
If Im going out to pay for something its got to be a fiddly, pain in the arse to make at home or some secret grandmothers recipe I havent mastered yet

There's obviously cheap versions of all this stuff but we've all been places where steaks are $60+ and no better than what I'd make at home. ie trendy, wanky nonsense

Same with coffee. Absolute wank fests. Marketed perfectly, brings in the suckers at an exponential rate

But coffee costs pretty much the same everywhere. If you find some hipster cafe in a Melbourne laneway that can only be found by people who already know where it is then your skinny long mac whatever is still going to be $4 or $5, same as going through McCafe drive through in Broadmeadows. Unless you think that is too much for a coffee which you can make for about 20c in ingredients? I make more coffees than I buy, but that's because too many cafes **** it up.

I have never had a $60 steak. I've had pub/restaurant steaks from $10 up to about $40 and I've had a two $100+ steak meals that were incredible. Agree there's a lot of overpriced crap that's no better than a cheap pub steak, but given a nice cut of steak from the butcher is usually $40-50/kg and serving sizes are usually 150-300g then a steak shouldn't cost $60+ unless it's a very expensive cut that you can't get at the local Woolies. By the same token I've had moderately priced steaks in suburban pubs that were fantastic. Like a lot of things, people often either don't know what they are doing or don't take pride in their work.

I was shouted a $110 steak at Rockpool by an IT vendor, it really wasnt that good and it still only came with mustard, no side dishes or salad. I have done much better buying a scotch or bone in rib eye from the local butcher over the Weber. The price comes from being "at Rockpool".

at least his staff made money out of it.......................

Pretty much all vegan food is complete crap and overrated by the 21st century brigade. Most of the IPA's that you spend $90 a case on.
Much prefer a good Steak with Eggs and Chips and a couple of Carlton Draught Beers...in fact that is what I am having tonite with a Penfolds Shiraz thrown in.
