Totally off topic midweek musing, but who would be our #1 target if all GWS players were available, but we could take only one?
Sam Taylor, just turned 26,198 cm KPD, who is equally adept 1 on 1 as he is intercepting, would be mine.
Darcy Jones or Aaron Cadman for mine. Love their work

One slight problem is the 14cm of height difference and the fact that Tom Green can kick on both feet
No not a problem, height isn’t the hallmark of Greens game….

You will find that the best clearance midfield players in the game are either 190cm or quick nimble guys

Matt Rowell is like the only except in the top 10.

If Gussy Sheldrick is to look at anyone for inspiration it is probably Tom Liberatore tbh

Umm, ok.

I'm a big proponent of this. 2 capitulations, albeit GF's, is not a statistically significant sample size in determining how bad we are. Losing a GF is a 50/50 chance, and getting smashed is just a simple possibility in the world of football, it can happen to the best of the best. Sometimes it even comes down to sheer shit luck.

What is a statistically significant sample size however, is making 2 GF's in 3 years, because the body of work throughout a season to make it to the final day is too much for it to be considered luck or coincidence.

But i don't look at it negatively like you are here, i don't think the mental issue around it is as big as what it is made out to be. I think it's just pure man-made hysteria for the sake of sensationalism. Unfortunately though, a lot of people are buying into it, including our coach who is seemingly hell bent on changing our whole set up based on those 2 games which puts our successful chemistry at risk.

If you're good enough to make it to the gf, you're good enough to win it. Goes for both teams - but one has to lose - so there doesn't have to be a deeper meaningful reason or issue for the losing team every time, even if that is 2 gf's on the bounce that were smashings. Our best chance to make another GF and win it is to continue doing what we were doing in those 2 seasons, because you have to be able to make it first which is bloody hard in itself. Trying to figure out another way is just too hard of a task and not worth the risk of throwing off the balance in a side that has proven it can make a GF.

You could replay last years GF 10 times over for 10 weeks straight with the same players, same coach, same tactics - and i guarantee brisbane won't win all of them. A few will go our way, with one or two potentially being big margins too, that's just the nature of footy. It's basically a lucky dip as to which one of those results is going to occur, and we've drawn the short straw 4 times in a row now. It's unfair and unlucky, but it was always a possibility.
Great post and I hope you’re right.

I can only say that if it were ME in that situation, the GF track record would absolutely mess with my head, which is what I based my thoughts on.

But I’m not a highly paid professional that gets paid to be judged on my performance week in, week out so I have no idea what it’s really like.

I would hazard a guess it's even more likely to mess with their heads because of the very fact they are highly paid professionals who get paid to be judged on their performance week in, week out. All of the work, both physical and mental, they put in to a premiership campaign every year, the dreams they've had since childhood... all down the tubes.

Grand finals can never be reduced down to "one game", because the simple fact is that to make a grand final is the result of nearly twelve months of work. That's why grand final beltings are so much harder to come back from than, say, a home & away season belting in May.

Thanks , but weren't we expected to ?

Not really. Well, not after Cal Twomey insinuated Green and then pushed Beatson into an answer, at which point he said there are lots of different types of midfielders, or something to that extent.

That's when all the air came out of the balloon. GWS were always going to match, but he was exactly what we needed

Also just one other thing to note we're still challenging for the worst contested marking season since that stat began in 1999, and likely in modern history since if anything the volume of contested marks has decreased over time.

We're averaging 6.7 for the year. It's a race against the 2005 Bulldogs who had Brad Johnson as their leading contested mark winner and finished on 6.7.

We lost this stat 21-7 on the weekend.
16 and 10 in the 2 games since the GWS game. The average is up to 7.3 and we only need one more CM to beat the 05 Dogs. Blakey has 7 in the past 2 games, after 7 in the first 19 games of the year.

Blakey 4-3
Grundy 1-2
Heeney 2-1
McCartin 3-0
McLean 0(DNP)-2
Rowbottom 2-0
Buller 1-0
Florent 0-1
Gulden 1-0
McInerney 0-1
Melican 1-0
Rampe 1-0
