Just wrote down a few points about Paddy for people who don't know to much about him!

Very Tall and Strong (194 95)

Was born in tassie and moved to victoria as a child

Played for 4 teams as a teenager- Geelong Facons, AIS, VIC Country and Geelong Grammar

Imposing in the contest, aggressive and strong (Loves to Crash Packs)

Off the field is a great bloke with great character

Came through the Falcons from a young age

Has velco like hands and an accurate kick for goal from a set shot

Tom Hawkins type!!!!

I, too, was really impressed with how he spoke. I remember Billings last year being nervous as hell, and he still is a bit when he speaks, but Paddy is just a natural.

Can't wait to see him tearing defenders in two! Petracca who?

If Petracca is as good as its said, it'll be spoken about for ten years regardless of what McCartin does.

Unfortunately its not just about who the club felt internally was the better choice; you get judged in the court of public opinion, and most have a low opinion of the Saints in general, so if you pass on a stud ("once in a generation player" was how plenty on here described Petracca when they thought he was ours) you get flak, and that has a number of knock-on effects.

Your first word says it all - IF. It could go the other way and we've got Plugger reincarnated.

He's another boy from the St Josephs College Geelong football factory, ignore Geelong Grammar, he's a St Joey's boy at heart, just check out his twitter pics, all Joey's boys.

Ameet Bains on St Kilda’s four draftees:

1. Paddy McCartin
“We have loved watching him play for more than three years. He is a big, imposing, aggressive key forward with a first rate character and work rate. He is 194cm tall, which is one centimetre taller than Nick Riewoldt and Jarryd Roughead. He takes big pack marks and he shows great leadership.”

Born: 19/4/1996
Height: 194cm
Weight: 95kgs
Drafted from: Geelong Falcons
Position: Key forward
Plays like: Jarryd Roughead

[QUOTEPersevering Saint, post: 36249375, member: 43324"]Don't worry about Petracca. Melbourne will do what they always do, and even if he was going to be a gun, they'll turn him into a dud.[/QUOTE]
No we won't.

Paddy on Triple M: https://audioboom.com/boos/2688716-paddy-mccartin-on-triple-m?playlist_direction=reversed

Cops a few digs in regards to dwarves, Seaford and whatnot. But handles himself well and gives a pretty good detail of what he needs to do every game due to Diabetes. Basically 1 finger prick each quarter and between quarters as well as before and after the game. Has a bag of sweets (glucose and sugar) on the bench if his levels are low or he's feeling down. Was diagnosed when he was 9 though so has had it half his life and knows how to play footy with it.

By the way guys, as much as I like Petracca, he is not a once in a generation player as a few of you are saying, don't read into it, media says that every single year. He's not a once in a generation player when we're watching Dustin Martin and Paddy Dangerfield running around. Looks like a great player, but not once in a generation, ignore the over-sensationalising haha.

Brayshaw considered perhaps just as good. Heeney considered perhaps better. A couple from next year perhaps even better still.

How short are these generations? o_O

Regarding the #1 pick the more I think about it the more I think we drafted for what we need, not so much in the immediate term but for what we will need in another 2 years.

By which time we will figure high enough in the draft to pick up one of the best young mids going around this time next year. To build up the mids now, who generally have a higher output sooner, could leave us short up forward in a couple of years, as anyone we may draft for forward roles won't be as highly developed.

There you go, well and truly placing my faith in the recruiting team :D
Absolutely spot on Judge.

We're not drafting for 2015, we're drafting for 2018-2025.

I fully expect Petracca to have a fantastic 2015 & for the usual suspects to bleat about the decision.

No matter what anyone says you need A grade talls to make Grand Finals. Sometimes the big guys don't single handledly win them but you need them to get there in the first place.

Couldn't care what Petracca does in 3 years time or over his career, will be to busy watching Paddy playing 200 games and kicking 800+ goals for the mighty Saints

A fairly well used term that one. Often it doesn't eventuate either. It's to me impossible to judge who will be the best of individual drafts let alone before they play against AFL level players. To me the guy who looks most likely to be a gun is Cockatoo, but he might have foot issues and never scale the heights he should.

I dont really feel a need to have a dig at Petracca now just because we picked Paddy instead.
a couple of days ago we all loved Petracca:p
I Wish the kid all the best. Except when we play the Dees and I hope Dunstan smashes him into the turf:D
Hope people realise Paddy will probably be very inconsistant next yr and will need time.
But i think we are going to have an absolute gun full fwd after hes played a couple of yrs:):) Very excited to have him at our club:thumbsu:
