I have highlighted all the ruckmen who have a significant height advantage over Ryder. It is surprisingly few.

The AA from last year (Lade) is only 2cm taller. The bigger problem with him playing in the ruck is his weight , only 91 kg.

A strange stat is that Jason Blake is only 189 cm, meaning Jobe Watson is taller!!

i really rate ryder this year, last year he looked lazy and bored, this year looks good

Actually this just highlights the difference between having confidence in your game and not having any.

The game has changed from short ruckmen. Jeff White was playing with ruckmen that were 199cm now we have the animal sandilands and cox. Ryder is a very good player but i dont think rucking against sandilands and cox is easy with a 10 cm advantage. And to be honest jeff white isnt a ruckman but his leap makes up for any height defecency, but we must keep in my mind jeff white also used to play when there wasnt that little circle so he could have a huge run up.

Just as well there are another 13 teams for him to play against.

Cox and Sandilands aren't so good because of their height, they're so good because of their ability to run and cover the ground. They are good because they are as good below their knees as they are overhead.

Ryder has that.

He is going to be a star.

I am prolly the only one who thinks this but imo he is our best kick in the club over 40+ metres, Fletcher included.

I agree. It's funny though, whenever he got the pill last year I was constantly worried about him turning it over. Gosh was I oblivious :D

Top game.

this freak of nature is going to go down as a steal at pick 7.

Unlike other physical specimens who are athletes learning to be footballers, blind freddy can see this guy has as poised a head, skills and footy brain as any highly touted draftee.

A package and a half!!!

I will put my hand up saying that I thought drafting another tall in Ryder was a mistake. Nothing against the kid just thought we became too top heavy.

However, Paddy is a special talent and I'm glad he's at Essendon.

just thought we became too top heavy.

Never understood this thinking, we are going to be a very rare position of a club requiring to pretty much replace a 4 decade playing spine nearly at once, definitlely in football terms at once.

We have 2 to 3 years to develop another starting 4 to take over, and that isnt even mentioning the fragility and limitedness of our ruck division.

Remember, these guys, including Gumby & Ryder, will take about 3 years to get physically and mentally ready to take over from the talent we are going to lose.

I don't mind Ryder at Centre Half-Back. He has key position written all over him. He's not too tall for a key position - he's a similar height to Fletcher, and he can play the ball around his ankles like he's a crumber with freakish natural agility. Already he's far better then the Sheedy "Kepler Bradley" project - our only other prospect for holding down Centre Half-Back (unless you feel like sacrificing Lucas there).

I too have to eat my humble pie. A couple of times last year I was wondering why Sheedy persisted on playing Ryder... now I'm so happy he has. It's a bit like me now saying, "Wow, I can't wait until Winder's in back in the team", when just a couple of months ago I wouldn't have had him in our best 22.

Winderlich was in our best 22 last year before he got injured.
Always had the makings of a great player - just had to put it all together.
When he starts (and my word he will) kicking goals on the run - well, watch out world.

Hopefully we can give him enough hope of a premiership to resist all the advances he'll be getting from other clubs as his career proceeds. I'd certainly think AA ruckman by 2010 - like I already said, White men can't jump!;)
