He's rapidly becoming my favourite player. I was just wondering where people thought he would play the bulk of his career. The way I see it there is 3 possibilities, either as a key position player forward or back, as a ruckman or doing an Adam Goodes and playing as a very tall midfielder. My personal preference would be as a ruckman, but atm i think he could just about play anywhere.

i'll admit that i judged him way too early last year. i just couldn't see his talent from the games he played.

he's stepped up in a huge way this year. reads the well so well. he still makes the occasional mistake, but the good things he does far outweigh the bad.

i heard that sheedy would have taken him number 1 in that draft. we have a star on our hands. the problem is, where is he going to play? he's so versatile.

I coudl see this coming from a mile away. I was defending him all last season/pre season now the boy is proving me right to the opposition supporters. Too much talent to not succeed.

that certainly is not a problem, it's an advantage

Good to see the kid come along in leaps and bounds. Every game is a learning curve for him and from what I've seen this year (v Adelaide and v St. Kilda) he's got a bright future. Given he was tipped to be a ruckman come forward but has been playing as a backman, where do you guys see him ending up?

Sheeds has said he wont be a full time backmen and will get expierence in various positions. Right now its unknown where he will end up. Probably as a Ruckmen.

I don't mind Ryder at Centre Half-Back. He has key position written all over him. He's not too tall for a key position - he's a similar height to Fletcher, and he can play the ball around his ankles like he's a crumber with freakish natural agility. Already he's far better then the Sheedy "Kepler Bradley" project - our only other prospect for holding down Centre Half-Back (unless you feel like sacrificing Lucas there).

I too have to eat my humble pie. A couple of times last year I was wondering why Sheedy persisted on playing Ryder... now I'm so happy he has. It's a bit like me now saying, "Wow, I can't wait until Winder's in back in the team", when just a couple of months ago I wouldn't have had him in our best 22.

I fail to understand how you can be too tall for a key position. You can be not agile enough, but this is not the case with Ryder.

As for Barnes being a pretty short ruckman, he didn't have the rucking circle to contend with and could jump into his oponent without being restricted by the new rules. Now it is almost a jump ball from basketball.

He's a better field kick than Lucas.

His vision is incredible, his angle kicking in probably the best in our side.

Don't agree with that. Lucas and McVeigh would be our top 2 field kicks in the team.

Lucas can hit targets on the chest > 60m not many in the AFL can do that

Lucas can also miss targets.

If you watch Ryder's kicks, you will notice he also puts them either on their chest or if they are moving, exactly where they are going to be when the ball gets there.

I rate him, from what i have seen of in game time, our best kick over 40+ metres

Lucas hardly ever misses a target from the field. I've seen Ryder kick the ball and for a bloke that's 197cm it's quite stunning. Lucas has an amazing penetration with his kicks, he barely misses a target especially if its > 40m

I agree with Merv. Lucas kicking to a moving target isn't in the class of Ryder.

Lucas kicks the ball in straight lines, Ryder works the angles brilliantly.

Ryder has the ability to kick the ball over opponents and through traffic to a target. Lucas doesn't do that. Have a look at some of the targets he spotted up in the middle of the ground.

Moot point anyway - he's a great kick

Ryder would have to be up there with the classiest Essendon players under pressure I've seen in the last 8 years I've paid serious attention

And his career's just 13 games old
This is going to be fun, watching him develop

I actually rate Fletch as our best kick over distance. Rarely misses his targets whether they be 40m away or 60m away. He's a brilliant kick of the football and not just for distance's sake. Take nothing away from Ryder, he's a great kick as well.

Fletch is in his own league when it comes to kicking out of FB. However, it's much harder to do that on the run

For what it worth, Paddy Ryder is a shoe in for Mark of the week. That makes it two marks of the wek, one goal of the week, one more nomination for goal of the week, and a mark which would have been mark of the week if a free kick wasn't paid. I'm still jaded about that. Antway, this just proves what people have been sayong about us: we are a far more exciting and free-flowing team this year than we have been for a while.
