FWIW I wouldn't think the majority of pokies money would come from problem gamblers, could well be wrong though.

This PDF states that 24% of pokies money comes from the problem gamblers, which make up 3% of the pokies users.

This is in New Zealand of course.
That is fair enough - but I am still very suspicious of any figures that come from people with vested interests...

In the article above John Lyons states

"Conservative estimates are that these reforms will reduce the revenue of gaming machine venues by a minimum of 30 per cent and potentially up to 50 per cent,"
I personally can't see how a large percentage of that would not come from 'problem' gamblers.

But, to be fair - in the same article Nick Minchin (we all know where he stands ;) ) accused the SANFL of a scare campaign that relied on inaccurate figures.

"Like the smoking bans in pubs, there will be a reduction in revenue but if, as they say, they don't have problem gambling in their clubs because they intervene at a personal level to stop it, then measures to stop problem gambling won't affect them," Senator Xenophon said.
I understand why people have to take responsibility for their own actions - and all of the examples that Tribey gives above are actually still ok  But, hey - if this could help the people with a problem I don't think 'community clubs' should stand in the way.

Speaking of our financial stability, I wonder if Mr Foley is looking for a new job? Looks like he's got a bit of time on his hands now.

Another reason why Port has to continue to be inovative to compete and one of the biggest reason driving the OnePAFC push - pokies

The Gaming Machine Entitlement Outcomes announced on May 20 reveal that nine of the 10 Victorian-based AFL clubs have bought gaming (poker) machine licences that will run for 10 years from 2012: in the auction Carlton secured 260 machines; Collingwood 191; Essendon 190; Geelong 182; Western Bulldogs 95; Melbourne 92; St Kilda 83; Hawthorn 75; and Richmond 70. Many of these machines are located in areas of Melbourne and Victoria in which the residents experience significant socio-economic disadvantage..............

SEVERAL Melbourne-based AFL clubs are involved in a bitter feud over the spoils of a multi-million-dollar bonanza to be reaped from the state government's recent auction of poker machine licences.
The pokies auction has secured the short-term futures of several clubs after they managed to secure licences at massively discounted prices.
But the Western Bulldogs and Richmond are seething after Carlton took over some of their lucrative venues - thanks to the intervention of pokies king and former Carlton director Bruce Mathieson.
The Blues have gone from having one pokies venue to four, with at least 260 machines secured at the bargain basement price of $5500 each.
.....
The Bulldogs have finished up with 55 machines, which the club purchased at an average cost of $62,000 each.
Licences for the state's 27,500 poker machine were sold as a result of the government's decision to end the duopoly on licences previously held by Tattersall's and Tabcorp.
Hawthorn was celebrating after the silent auction, having paid the $5500 minimum for some 100 machines for which it had considered bidding as much as $110,000 each.
Melbourne's board allocated $4 million for 92 machines at the Mathieson-owned Leighoak club, but ended up paying just $370,000.
Collingwood, St Kilda and Essendon - like Melbourne - took up the option of buying licences for 40 machines before the auction, paying between $25,000 and $40,000 each, before securing the balance of their machines at auction for just $5500 each................

This is only a 2.4 year bump not 10 plus years like recently.

It's not about Port but what the Vic clubs have managed to capitalise on the pokies purchased in May 2010 and how the competition for new revenue just got harder despite today's announcement.

CARLTON has hit a $16.8 million jackpot thanks to new Victorian poker machine laws.

And combined annual revenues for the nine Victorian clubs with pokies will climb by $42.9 million to $76.8 million.

A Monash University report reveals the Blues will gorge on gaming revenues this year -- more than doubling what they took in 2012.

Hawthorn will also cash in, with their cut of revenues under the industry's new tax regime set to soar to $13.3 million.

Collingwood and Essendon will also smash through the $10 million barrier.

The Blues control 290 money-spinning machines at four hotels gifted by club powerbroker and pokies king Bruce Mathieson.

Ten-year licenses to run Victorian pokies were auctioned at bargain prices by the Brumby government in 2010 and came into affect in August last year.

The new model has been criticised for being far too generous to venue operators.

Nine out of 10 Victorian AFL clubs control poker machines.

North Melbourne is the only Victorian club without pokies because of a no-gambling policy introduced by the club's board last year.

Critics say the move has made it "nearly impossible'' for North to compete financially.
