Club History PAFC Hall of Fame - A Numbers Game

Honestly I think Roger Delaney should be in there. 6 time premiership winner and the best full back of probably the last 50 years in the SANFL.

Bob Hammond would give him a good run for his money, he shut them all down.

Looks like there might be annual inductees up until the 150th anniversary. The Season Launch and HofF function has been combined. This will be as big as the B&F with 1,200 attending at the Convention Centre in March.

IN 2018 the Port Adelaide Football Club is excited to announce a combined Hall of Fame and Season Launch gala to kick-start a blockbuster season. The combined event will become an annual tradition for the club, with existing members of the Hall of Fame, members, and supporters invited to join the festivities in March. Port Adelaide’s Executive General Manager said the Club is excited to celebrate the heroes and legends of the club in this way, while also presenting the 2018 playing list to those attending.

“Bringing the legends of our Club together at the same time that we introduce the new players for 2018 feels like a great way to launch our season. Port Adelaide is a very special club, 148 years old and full of amazing people and amazing stories and keeping this alive and celebrating it is an important part of our future. In 2020 we will celebrate our 150th year and that will be hugely significant so want to make sure that leading into that we elevate and celebrate the people who have provided our Club the platform to be where we are today in the AFL. Our new players already undertake a detailed induction when they arrive at the Club, but the opportunity to bring these groups together each year when we launch our new season campaign feels like a wonderful way to celebrate the past and the future at the same time.”

A bit expensive but it might be part of the Player sponsor package we work out for Big Footy as the season launch has always been part of the package

The Hall of Fame and Season Launch event will be held in the magnificent new auditorium at the Adelaide Convention Centre, with over 1200 people expected to attend this showcase event.

If we were going to add more players from our pre AFL days they would probably be there by now. Tredders, Choco and Bruce Weber all sound fine to me. Thus far the selection process has been spot on and I have only been surprised by one inclusion.

It shows we don't give these places away lightly - I expect many outsiders would be shocked that Choco isn't in there yet. Freo's eventual first premiership coach will probably get instant legend status, even if they were an ex Weagles player.
Bahahahaha freo.. premiership lmfao... yeah well they will jag one at some stage...

You got it in one. I am not disputing Craig's ability as a footballer but I was never sure he had done enough as a Port player compared to the others on the list. That said Craig did win three B&Fs so I do not begrudge him a place in the list.

Would've been four + a Magarey if he didn't jet off to England on the u19s Ashes tour, goddamn you Braddles.

Throw in a premiership, All-Australian guernsey and "Greatest Team of the Greatest Club" selection.

He was also on the back of my duffle coat.

Why have all the pre AFL guys spot be taken? It's all relative. They started with the best 20 and will add others irrespective of when they played coached or performed admin roles. The AFL HofF keeps on adding guys from pre 1996 when they set up the original inductees. When they get to 100 inductees in total probably half the ones added from now will come from pre AFL days.

It's interesting to note how few players really straddle the Fos and Jack eras. Bruce Light and Peter Woite would be a couple, probably Paul Marrett another. Russell played 6 years under Fos but many more after that.

If Bruce Light doesn't get in I'm microwaving my membership.

So where do you draw the line? There has to be some exclusivity to this as a Hall Of Fame with 200 members at this stage would be ridiculous. You could probably mount a case for seven or eight inductees every couple of years but eventually the merit in the exercise is lost. The inductees thus far have been pretty good and the three mentioned seem OK to me. What has the AFL Hall Of fame got to do with this exercise? We Are Port Adelaide.

You draw the line at excellence. We could go 20 years in the AFL and not win a flag so that won't be a metric for some players. We had over 800 plus players before the AFL days and almost 200 since, plus over 100 coaches presidents CEO's and other admin people. If we add 2 people a year for 33 years to get to 100 in the HoF we will still have way less than 10% of all possible inductees. I suspect after 2020 we will drop the annual inductees. Why is the AFL HofF relevant? Because we copy what they do and they and everyone else copies what the Baseball HofF has done since 1936 given they were the first one ever in sports. We might be Port Adelaide but we arent that original.

We are Port Adelaide and we are an original or at least that is what we have been trying to tell the AFL for 20 years. If you are going to keep inducting people from the distant past why not do it in the first place and save yourself some trouble? If If you want to follow the others that is your prerogative but personally I do not give a toss what the AFL or the Yanks do. We are Port Adelaide and we should do it our way.
