Pagan or Parkin? Who would you rather coach Carlton, i see this as a VERY hard choice, I honestly don't even have an opinion, i'd love to find out what everyone else thinks though, both so aggressive coaches i really don't know who i would choose if the opportunity came my way... thoughts people?

Parkin is a sensational motivator but as far as getting a team to play for the jumper and playing above themselves, I think Pagan has it all over Parkin.

Put it this way, would Parkin have got our team to 11th last year? I think not.

Agree with you bfe - this is a VERY VERY hard choice, made even harder by the fact that Parko delivered us our last flag!

You can't question the intensity of either coach. Statistically I think they are also on a pretty even par. Both are as good as each other in handling the media. As far as being a motivator goes I think Parko's just ahead of Pagan but when it comes to planning, building and preparing a young team I think this is where Pagan has the goods over Parko.

I love Parko (even if he does hate Fev) and have enormous respect for him but after some long hard thinking, it's Pagan for mine - JUST.

How can you choose? They're both great coaches and will have both had tremendous success at Carlton and more than one club when Pagan calls it day.
Which is something you can't say about Sheedy who has only coached the one club and never had to coach a side which struggles from day to day.
no contest...Parkin was finished as a coach when he left the blues , the stress of the job was getting to him physically , Pagan on the otherhand seems to revell in it .
Parkin has done wonders in the past and we should be eternally grateful , but our future is with Denis

Parkin was great for us, but I think he can get too depressed when the team is struggling and this is not a good thing for players to see.

Pagan seems to be an incredible motivator and eternal optimist which has really worked at Carlton so far...

Great point Lajon. I think that about sums Pagan up to a tee. And you're right - that attitude definatley rubs off on the players and indeed everyone involved with the club including the supporters.

NO MORE!!!!!!
;)

Now Pagan, over history Parkin.

Used to love seeing Parko's jugular bursting in the huddle. Certainly fired them up. Starting losing the edge towards the end though.

But David Parkin was one of Carlton's best coaches, not as great as Barassi, but better then Walls or Brittain.Pagan needs to win a premiership at carlton before being considered a 'good coach'.

spot on bombers2003.
Pagan's credentials are second to none but he has yet to achieve anything substantial at Carlton (albeit he is not at fault for the predicaments of the club in the last 2-3 years). He has performed well under intense pressure and with very limited resources (talent-wise). To compare with Parkin is premature.

I loved Parkin as Carlton coach. Intense, competitive, very astute and intelligent. Always great to listen to. Achieved results. However, a black mark will always remain against his achievements for the disappointing ending to the 2004 season. Carlton entered the finals campaign that year as minor premier (or 2nd ?) and was in good form (besides the last game of the year when we lost to the Bombers in extremely wet conditions). But the capitulation in both finals was very disappointing. Given we had thrashed eventual premiers WCE by 12 goals only 3 weeks before the finals began, you would think Carlton would have had a red hot go at them if they made the GF. Either way, it was a poor result for Parkin and as is always the case with the way a team performs, the buck stops with the coach.

As I said, over history it is Parkin because he has achieved more. Right now, it would be Pagan as I believe the coaching caper has passed Parko by now. He lost a lot of enthusiasm for the job whereas Pagan is an optimist. Now = Pagan. History = Parkin.

The question was "Who would you rather coach Carlton?" i.e. Who would be better for Carlton at this point of time .... Pagan or Parkin?

The question was not asking who is better or who has a better history.

And I think most supporters would rather Pagan coaching the side at the moment then Parkin.

Agree, but Parkin is the greatest coach we've had and was named the coach in our team of the century.
