Not saying i rate maxwell but he offers more than doolan
Lot of potential in Maxwell but he isnt quite there yet. The other problem is he is still a very offensive player. We have a real lack of guys who can grind out an innings when the going is tough (or when you need to grit out a draw). Outside of Rogers who else is willing to sit there and occupy the crease?

No, you are just deciding to judge Lyon on one game and suggest changes that will make the side weaker
Lyon has taken 25 wickets in the sub continent from his 7 matches, including 2 five for's

Lyon's bowling with the newer ball was good in this test, without getting results. He managed a fair amount of turn late on day 1 and was unlucky not to get a few wickets

If we had a better SPIN BOWLING option waiting in the wings, then I would say that Lyon could make way for them. However Maxwell provides much less in this regard, and his batting ability has nothing to do with Lyon
I think he has something against Lyon, to want him out after one down performance when the only replacements are weaker options is ludicrous. Same applies for Siddle as far as I'm concerned.
Just keep the team the same. Lyon was good in the ashes and vs SAF, plays his first test match in a completely different environment and people want him out. He's still our best spinner.
Baby out with the bath water mentality. Madness.

Maxwell isn't the all encompassing saviour people on here want him to be. Lyon is not as ad as is being portrayed on here but he does have a problem with darting the ball in under pressure which He needs to address before Thursday
No one is saying he will be, but in my opinion he is a better option than both Doolan and Marsh. Doolan has had a decent crack and has shown nothing.

Nothing? I'd argue he was reasonable against South Africa. Horrible this test, but number three isn't an easy position and he got a ton in the warm up match. He's overly tentative against spin i'd concede but tbh I'd prefer to see him be given one more chance than to give Maxwell a game

Well he has made one 50 in 8 innings so I can guess you can say he has shown something...?

An average of 23 is pretty poor for your number 3.

Maxwell had a better FC record and is a good player of spin.

Jeez there are some reactionary people on this board. This was always going to be a tough game given that Pakistan are pretty good, and we struggle against spin bowling.
Wait to see how we go in the second test before declaring the whole team needs to be dropped.

Doolan can build an innings and did reasonably against a world class attack in his debut series. I would give him one more test, if he fails, discard him for the foreseeable future. I just don't see how Maxwell slogging a 26 ball 31 and bowling 20-30 overs of non turning offspin is going to solve our problems

I'm more worried about getting Smith in at 3 than getting Maxwell in the side. First drop has been a concern since Ponting lost his way and we have a good opportunity to solve the problem by promoting Smith.

It's only a two test series so I'd be surprised to see more than one change (maybe swapping Siddle out for someone else, I can see the selectors going for that). Would like to see Maxwell and Hughes get a go but I think they'll give everyone a chance to make amends.

Doolan's career would have to be in trouble if he doesn't perform in the second.

The issue is and we saw it in the india series, we just don't have any replacements capable of performing in the subcontinent. Im all for dropping doolan have never been a big fan but i wouldn't be confident that any replacement would do that much better.

Wouldn't mind giving Starc a shot, Should still be able to get swing, whereas siddles seam isn't that great on these decks.

I don't mind Starc but I'm really iffy about Johnson/Starc/Marsh being our 3 seamers. Just seems unstable (although it's not like the fast bowling in the first test was great, perhaps excluding Johnson's first dig).

Doolan's career will be over if he doesn't perform in the second test (assuming he even gets selected for it)

It is, but Pakistan have clearly shown they aren't going to attack our pacers so Starc's bad ball every four or five deliveries isn't as much a worry as usual.
