Well, this is the thing about night watchmen. Okay, he's survived until stumps. That's fine. However, when he walks out today, he's no longer a night watchman, he's now a Number 3 batsman and has to bat like one. This is why the night watchman rarely works. And PLEASE ..... do not respond with the very few times a night watchman has made a big score. The failure rate would be in the high 90% mark, and yet we still do it.
Exactly Lyon or any other night watchman don't deserve to bat at three as these so called "batsman", we have in the team should go and do what their paid to do. Honestly at moment, it really doesn't matter who bats at three or any other position for that matter because none of them are deserving of their batting positions at the moment, let alone being in the team. Every single one of them have been pathetic to put it nicely. 1 hundred and only 3 or 4 50's in two tests is terrible batting, when compared to the Pakistan batting or just in general. Especially when 1 of those 50's came from Mitchell Johnson.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Another overseas series against a subcontinent team and more likely series loss, India will come down and we will smash them. Not sure of losing overseas and winning at home which is the norm in test cricket great for the game. India beat us comprehensively 4-0, yet in about a months time they will struggle to draw a game let alone win one, they have almost zero chance of winning the series.

With all this talk of Maxwell not having a temperament and patience, it's seems some forget that his previous best SR is 62.50 - hardly excessive.

That of course doesn't mean he DOES have those things, but using test evidence of him going out and just slogging doesn't really fly.

Test cricket is my no 1 format and I subscribe to all the key notions of succeeding in test cricket.

But when you see a top order batsman going at a 100% strike rate in a test, it is simply captivating.

Sehwag's 195 at the G, Chanderpaul's 69 ball ton and Gayle's 100 at the WACA come to mind. Also, I remember seeing Afridi hit McGrath for a six over cover at the SCG, that was just insane.
None of those innings were scored when the team was trailing by 300.

If you were captivated by that then I doubt you actually subscribe to the key notions of succeeding in test cricket.

It's nothing to do with strikerate. You can be aggressive like Marsh was without getting carried away and getting out with some of the dumb things that Maxwell does.

Afridi is a good example - an incredibly overhyped and mediocre career. Shit averages in all formats with bat and ball.
Afridi's test batting average was higher than Haddin, Maxwell and Doolan's, very close to Rogers and Smith, plus he averaged a reasonable 35 with the ball (better than Lyon). Would walk into this test lineup.

And look at his ODI record

The King of Hacks selected more on hype than performance
