Palmer Interview

It's only one side of the story but it's a serious inditement on Harvey.
As others have said we could see it from a distance and it's just another part of what was a ridiculous year on the coaches box and it's fair to say Harvey nailed his own coffin shut.

Might only be 1 side of the story, but its been rumoured to be 1 of the reasons as to why he was sacked.

Still wish we kept Palmer an think he will be great at GWS :(
I would pick Palmer over Mzungu, lower every day of the week.

Was treated terribly this year, maybe its coz they had heard rumours he was gone but still no excuse for the treatment.
With so many injuries he absolutely needed to be played in the midfield yet still wasnt given any real opportunities.

Very interested to see if there is a response from the club or Harvey. The season played out as if Palmer's leaving was already in place. True or not? That makes a massive difference to his treatment.

There are links to news articles making very certain claims that Palmer was going to GWS as early as October 2010, after he met with a GWS contingent who came to Perth to see him.

That said, he may well be back one day and probably regrets the decision now that Harvey has left.

Harvey obviously had communication problems and a lot of player relationships broke down over the last couple of years, including the one with Pav - think back to Pav's interview around August after Harvs said he might consider Fev. Was quite clearly some shit going on.

At the very latest, Rhys was on the outer with Harvey after the North Melbourne game in 2010. I recall rumours coming out that Harvey blamed Palmer for the loss.

Palmer was shit that match and his turnover swung the game back in North's favour, but the whole team choked up in the second half, that singling out a third year player who is coming back from a knee reco as the reason for a loss is pretty weak*. Maybe Harves should have singled out some of the club's "leaders" who did their usual magical disappearing act, or pointed the finger at himself for not playing a ruckman. As it happened Palmer only played one more game for the season - the Hawks game where we rested everyone else.

(*If true, of course)

Lyon would be the first guy to tell this princess to harden the **** up and dig in.

Palmer played like a bitch, no two ways about it.

I don't give a stuff if you're playing on a flank, you can still have an impact and not shank two out of every three kicks. You can still run hard. He was never the same after the knee - I guess a year of work with little reward in the short term would be hard for anyone.

Will struggle for his spot from 2013.

Palmer may have just given a politician like response to the interviewer..... and I wonder if the rumours of his own off field behaviour contributed to the overall outcome?

Admittedly, some bizarre treatment by Harves also.

I think we need to draw a veil over this and move on

If he had already signed with GWS, which is a real possibility, then it is in the clubs interests to move away from making Palmer a core part of the midfield. You are talking about a vindictive campaign, and I am giving the only plausible reason for what we saw occur. Got another theory, or do you think it was his haircut Harvey didn't like?

I also thought it was not uncommon for substitutes to do some post game training. You are posting that he was "forced" to. Well if that is part of the clubs training regime so what?

Ok , name the other substitutes who were ordered to do some post game training. Simple answer.....None.

"I am giving the only plausible reason for what we saw occur."

Plausible ? How can his treatment be validated if Harvey thought he was going, if it was going to cost us games.
Rhys had not signed before the season and this was a peurile campaign by a fool.

Players for every team did runs after the game to maintain fitness.
All teams were doing it. Gaff was the sub for something like the 1st halfa dozen games of the season so they needed to make sure his tank got used to only playing a qtr of a game. Teams made sure the player who only got a qtr or a half a game tops still emptied their tank so to speak so that their aerobic ability wasn't decreased, they still needed to feel like they played a full game. Just another pitfall of the sub rule.

Probably the fairest post in the thread. For a player coming off a knee reco and needing to do everything right, I heard far too many rumours of Palmer doing plenty outside the definition of 'right'.

But that's not to say Harvey treated him well, we could all see he was being played completely out of position.

I think we need to draw a veil over this and move on

Nah, it's legitimate off season chat.

Personally, I reckon Palmer could shine at GWS. He's going to be given a role similar to what he had with us in his first season, and he's going to feel a lot of pressure to perform both on and off the field. And he seems like the sort of bloke that needs it.

I saw Pitt doing it on one of the occasions he was sub.

Pretty sure it was standard practice across the league, just wasn't always visual to spectators.

Probably from here it is best to assume you have little idea about what you are talking about and are overwhelmed by some ordinary treatment of one of your favourite players. And I am not a Harvey fan, and thought how Palmer was used was strange. But I have challenged you to put up another plausible reason beyond that he may have already indicated he was going to GWS. You've come up with tough words and no substance.

Doing run throughs after being substitute is legitimate fitness management, and probably something Harvey had no say in at all. You make it sound like some unGodly punishment.

Oh yeah, there is another plausible reason.

In my opinion Palmer seems to have learnt the art of blaming others from Harvey. And he can take that with him.

Lyon visited Riewoldt and Lenny Hayes before boarding the plane to Perth so he obviously had his favourites too.

while lyon may have his favourites (and most coaches would love their superstars), he doesn't let any ill feeling with other players affect the way he coaches him. if harvey let personal differences with individuals affect his coaching, then he compromised the club out of selfishness.

Yeah , and the cemeteries of the world are littered with Martyrs.

Mark harvey made himself one.

My final post on this thread...getting too emotional for me.

If there is any truth to Harvey playing Palmer out of position (and I for one think he did) it's a dog act and he deserved what he got.

Whatever you think of Palmer, he's never struck me as the kind of person cunning enough to spin his way out of things, and I think this is a fair insight into what happened to the club after Barlow went down. It still astonishes me that Palmer was on the outer nearly immediately after that, while convicted drug abuser Johnson held onto his golden ticket through 2011. I mean, all the rumours of bad discipline about Palmer you could throw at Johnson just as much.

I think this is the key to the deterioration in their relationship. If the rumours are true there were was some harsh words spoken after Barlow broke his leg. Either way it was a burden he had to carry for some time and he strikes me as a confidence player who seemed to be overthinking things when he got the ball. It was a shame because I think that he was playing his best game that day following his knee.

Even if he had already signed with GWS in the off season I think he was handled in a strange fashion this year and was not given a fair go, especially with the injury run we had.

Either way it sounds like he doesn't bear a grudge and is on better money than he would get with us for the next four seasons, so good luck to him and I hope he does well at GWS.

Harvey would have been sacked at end of 2010 or even during it if it wasn't for Barlow. He is pretty much the sole reason for the catalyst of that season and without that miracle Harvey's losing record would have sealed his fate much earlier.

Yep was all barlow

Had nothing to do with the immense pressure applied all over the ground.
Great tackling and defense.

Was all due to Barlow
