Summer Paris 2024 - Volleyball

Super excited for the volleyball! Actually one of my favourite and most anticipated events on the whole schedule. Japan have shot up the rankings, now 2nd. So keen to see the human trampoline Yuji Nishida go about his business.

Men’s competition:

Pool A: France, Slovenia, Canada, Serbia
Pool B: Poland, Italy, Brazil, Egypt
Pool C: Japan, USA, Argentina, Germany.

watched the German men upset Japan in 5 sets this afternoon. What a great way to kick things off.
I don’t really understand what’s going on outside of the very basics but the athleticism and skill is incredible. I’m trying to figure out the positions and what their roles are but for now it’s just fun to watch them flying around.

Italy currently 2-0 up in a pretty tight game against Brazil.

Italy beat Dominican Republic in 4 sets. The second set was insane, some of the rallies were intense. Poland vs Japan next match.

My son has suddenly gotten way into volleyball (on the back of watching Haikyuu!!) so we'll be taking in plenty this Olympics.

Netherlands the big underdog. The crowd is hyped, the volleyball is fantastic.

This is seriously epic. My goodness. 10-10 5th set, rallies insane, crowd going off. Volleyball is the best.

How good is this sport, nothing between all these teams. Turkish girls escaped that one. Time for Gabi and the girls now, should be a comfortable opener for them.

Friday night vs Slovenia should be terrific. Both are through to the quarters, but think both would want to use the hit-out as a way to set-up for a Gold Medal run.

Volleyball is using a mixed playoff system, top seeds in each group are 1-3 but 2nd and 3rd ranked teams are jumbled up. And then 1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5.

In theory, a team could replay against their pool opponent (if top = 3rd, second = 6th). But the two top ranked teams will play third ranked teams.

Just caught up on replay. What a game to go to! Serve couldn’t have ended up in better hands at the end with Brazil coming at them.

Turkey looked super impressive against Dominican Republic earlier. Vargas dominated.

And now Brazil look brilliant against a very gallant Japan. First set 25-20.
