Parramatta ropes in underground pipes (Construction question)

What is the purpose of parra ropes being rigged through underground pvc pipes? When I was a kid my friends and I had a new estate being constructed behind us. The pipes for all the sreets were already installed & buried with pits at the end, all the ropes were linked throughout these pipes and tied together in these pits. We decided to take the rope as it was free and there was a lot of it. Ended up being about 4 blocks worth.

Always wondered what the rope was for and how much of shitstorm removing it would've created.

It's for running cables through the conduit.

Yes the rope is taped to the cables which are then pulled through the pipes. The guys would have spewed with the rope gone as they would then have to put rods through the pipe to pull it through .
