if your spine and your front row isn’t doing a great job
And yet the Eels first-choice halves pairing would be the envy of most sides in the comp, so where's the problem?
Would it?
Moses did an admirable job when he came into the Origin side, and the guy can play. Brown has some ability
But let’s have a look at a few stats:
Try assists:
Brown ranked 9th in the comp. Ok that’s not a bad effort…. 3 roosters ranked above him. 3. From one team.
3 sea eagles ranked immediately just after him.
Moses missed a fair bit of footy - two thirds of the season - so he’s not going to make that list. He gets excused for not actually being on it. But he averaged 0.5 of a try assist per game. The guys in the top 30 are all going at better than that rate and the likes of Cleary, Walker, Hunt, etc - they’re going at 1+ a game.
Gutherson to his credit also scrapes into the top 20 so that’s a better effort than I’d have thought.
That’s for totals. It gets a lot worse when you just look at averages (Brown comes in at 21)
Line break assists?
Again if you look at averages per game, Brown comes in at 25, Moses at 32.
I’m not saying these guys can’t play, but if your spine is supposed to be class and the two guys at the focal point of it are the 25th and 32nd most adept players at putting guys into space, you aren’t going to be scoring a lot of points.
Maybe it’s because other aspects of their side aren’t functioning; maybe if you put them behind the Penrith pack they dominate, I don’t know. But those aren’t the numbers of halves pairing that’s going to be driving a side to a title right at the moment
