Thanks for the reply.

Academics interest me the most, don't you feel like youre wasting your life? You have the intelligence why not work in the corporate side? By the time you're 30 could be on $200k
That would be different strokes... some people just aren't interested in $200k (or whatever)!

Did the your survey OP. Gee wiz some of those questions drove me around the bend - so similar, but just answered them with my first thoughts rather than think about them too much.

Best of luck with your thesis.
thanks mate,
I appreciate it!

Have a read of my occupation on my profile buddy. You do know the financial sector has led to the greatest growth and all the advancement we have?

Also the word entrepreneur is so badly misused these days.

I would have sworn that the greatest growth and advancement has come from scientific fields, but on second thoughts its probably the pr0n industry that has really led the way!

Anyway, how about that survey....I've completed it!

Hit it at 24 working for myself in IT.

Screw "careers". What a waste of life.

And what IT work you did?

Yes you're right 'careers' don't make everyone rich long term, only a select few get filthy rich.

I first discovered that distemper-like viruses initiated multiple sclerosis in those persons genetically pre-disposed to it. I later characterised a signaling protein that when mutated in a particular attachment location, could prevent metastsis of a range of cell types including breast cancer cells. I spent years on that work. Many of my ex-colleagues are still in the lab (in G8s) doing work like this day-in, day-out so that when you or those in your family get such a disease (1 in 3 get cancer) there will be increasingly better treatments and a better prognosis. If you believe that sits within your definition of "useless", then...well I could swear at this point and call you a DH, but instead I just feel sorry for you and wish you a Merry Capitalist and a Happy New Year
Haha, top shelf burn.

I freelanced. I now work for a startup in New York but still doing the occasional paid project on the side.
How long ago? Most freelancers I know these days are struggling, but it was pretty good back in the day.

Only joined this startup 8 months ago. Freelanced for the previous 4 years before that.

From personal experience, a lot of freelancers struggle because they don't know how to price themselves.

Most of my friends were doing quite well - I think it might be age related. Might be a bit like being single at 25 versus single at 40. Everyone wants the former, people wonder if there's something weird about the latter unless they're really good looking or something.

Oh there is definitely ageism and sexism in the IT industry, no doubt about that.

I don't plan to code forever. I reckon it would kill me.

Sexism is its own problem, but the ageism is quite stupid from a productivity point of view. Hang around long enough and you see people try to reinvent the wheel three times over (but this next time it will be in Go or Rust).

There definitely an odd preference for the "new tool" over the "right tool".

Many thanks to everybody who has participated so far.

I need more participants so, I'll continue collecting data for a number of weeks, so if you haven't checked it out yet I'd be grateful if you gave it a go.
