Tom Hawkins summed it up in one word “infectious”. In the last you could actually see it and once the dam wall burst they got belief . Confidence, it’s amazing stuff!

Also for a rebuilding side this really does hammer home how important whole ground and team defence first mentality is. I see why a lot of sides start rebuilding with that as a focus. Same inside 50s as the Bulldogs last week but we repelled them with ease.

After getting absolutely shit faced last night (something I haven’t done for about 5 years) I’m only just returning to functional human form.

The good news is I get to relive the blur that was yesterday afternoon when I watch the replay this evening.
Can’t ****ing wait!

So much to saviour on here but going to be dickish and post first, read later. Yep. That's how I roll.

Having had the pleasure of the mid to late 90s, 2000s/2010s finals wins, 2019 Poorta routing etc - as a day at the footy that was up there.

I'm always petrified of the North trademark slump but it was obvious from the opening bounce that both crowd and team were switched on. Sitting near the cheer squad (not my usual position) the energy was electric.

As a team and list we've had several issues in recent times:

  • No genuine key forward to work in with Larkey, straighten up our entries, take the heat off the medium forwards and actually make opposition defenders wary of not manning
  • No crafty small forwards (apologies to Kosi Mahony) to sweep, swivel and make something out of nothing
  • No hard hitting pressure small forwards to keep tbe heat on defences trying to rebound
  • A team of players largely running one way, some guys with no skill but some heart, some guys with some heart and no skill
  • A defence at war with itself with no apparent
  • Lots of goals left on the shelf with a lack of system and no forward dynanism
  • Sloppy ball handling, stagnant movement
So it was a surprise that suddenly on one magic day:
  • The opposition couldn't just have 2 blokes fisting Nick Larkey all game because Jack Darling was an ever present threat, forwards were constantly rotating, swapping roles and making it impossible to only blanket Larkey as a winning ticket
  • RHJ was hoovering up loose balls and taking off like a Kelpie
  • Konstanty was holding the "Callum Mills" hammer ready for anyone in his path
  • Midfielders were chasing, grafters were finessing, finessers were grafting
  • The defence were largely a unit, letting Charlie fly, spoiling, backing up, looking somewhat composed
  • Yes we missed some early on but we were generating a lot of systematic attacks before party time kicked in
  • Players were going one touch, playing hot potato and making ground in a form of Northball meets guerilla warfare
I strongly suspect this team has been given a clear message from the coaches - if our white collar players can play blue collar - who knows how far we can go? And just maybe a few blue collar types have been told to back themselves too.

Corr, Pink, McDonald, Scott were taking some real chances through confidence.

I've never seen Larkey, LDU, Sheezel play like that. Not their most statistically impressive games by a long shot - but they're exactly who seem to be playing with the ferocity of a fringe player clinging to a spot, with the assurance their class and talent will kick and do the rest.

~When the talent meets hard work - look out.

Fantastic win. Fingers crossed it's only the beginning. (Deborah Conway likes this)
