Finals is the aim for next year. We all want a flag, but realistically that probably isnt going to happen next year. In the years proceeding that it's definitely a realistic aim, but for 2010 we should look to make finals and continue to see the development of our young side.

I know that's an early call, but the position is there for the taking, and he needs to take the opportunity whilst it is there. Someone with his kicking skills kicking in from behinds will be a huge asset to our team, as it's something we have lacked for a while. It will free up Davey from kicking in duties. I want 15 games minimum from Strauss, and some pretty solid performances amongst them.

I'm going to add another one in here as well.
Morton: Obviously has the talent, and I know his season was interupted this year, but a lot of the time he looked disinterested. He needs to stay in games and consistently gathering at least 20 touches. 20 touches from him will be very damaging to the opposition. He has the size and running ability to be a very dangerous player as he can play forward or back or through the middle. He has the potential to be the swing man in our team and really punish the opposition. 22 games from Morton, 5 brownlow votes minimum, a few goals, and some big jobs for him this year. We need Morton to come on in leaps and bounds this year.

however 40 goals is a bit of an ask for Watts... next season he will be 20... NReiwoldt kicked 25 at the age of 20

Geez, where to start!

(a) Did you read my post before typing something? or did you just see 8 wins and get all excited there. I said that 8 wins would be a pass mark, no where did I state I would either be happy with 8 wins or we will only win 8 matches. A pass mark is a barely satisfactory mark, a mark I would not be
happy with but a mark that would say to me that we have not gone backwards.

(b) The real world? in the real world you are required to be realistic and realistically I think 8 wins is a bare minimum for us next year.

(c) Don't get so excited next time, its ok I think you tough now you have gone on with you rant little boy. So run along and leave the grown ups to do the talking here!

Personally I think a pass mark should be to make the 8, but I think they will settle on 10 wins. For the people who think we can't improve dramatically cos we only won 8 & a half wins remember that Geelong, Essendon, Brisbane and Hawthorn were battlers until they got on a roll that brought them premierships.

I think a pass mark for Watts is to kick more goals than games. If he gets dropped then he doesn't deserve a pass mark.

A pass mark for Strauss would be continually being in the best for Casey, if he can become a regular member of the senior side then that is just a bonus.

Sylvia is our most important player along with Moloney. If they can cause the opposition problems then that has to free up Davey to create havoc.

Correction, At this time of the year the draw seems easy. But as it turns out we could end up playing all of 2011's top 4 teams twice, anything happens in a year buddy, so ease up a little.

But to OP:

I agree I would see Dees making the finals as a serious possible and considering that Bailey's contract expires at the end of the year I am sure that would be a minimum for next year, just a thought.

Would love to see Watts have at least one game where he can look at and say that may have been the start... in a few years :)
 
Here are my criteria for a pass mark for 2011 (N.b I copied and pasted these from an earlier similar thread)

#1. Win in Adelaide- I've had enough of this AAMI Stadium bullshit, and I'm sure the players have too. If we don't beat either Port or the Camry's over there this year, I will resign myself to the fact that it is never going to happen.

#2. Win games we're favourites in- The game v. West Coast at the G this year was the most sordid affair I've been to. If we're a genuinely improving side, we have to start beating sides that we're meant to.

#3. Beat North Melbourne at least once- They have a great stock of developing youngsters, as do we, but they've had the wood over us recently. Would love to see us get over them at least once to get some bragging rights back.

4. Win at Etihad- Similar to the Adelaide scenario, we need to show that we're not a one arena pony. We went some way to dispel that myth this year with wins in Darwin/Brisbane, and if we can win in Darwin why not over the other side of the city?

#5. Beat Gold Coast - not as important if they have a win earlier in the year, but I do NOT want to be the first team they beat.

NOTE no finals on this list, make of that what you will. inb4 'you're not a real supporter'

I think a pass mark would be anything that's a slight improvement on last year. When you look at clubs with young lists, they often have a good year and then slide back down the ladder following that. Essendon is a recent example of this.

With this in mind, and when you consider the fact that we've lost two of the club's most experienced players, I'd be happy if we could firstly achieve what we did last year, and secondly build upon it with a couple of additional wins. As others have said, finals are not out of the question, but if we make the finals that will a great effort, and much better than what I would consider a pass mark.

On individual players, I think others have summed it up pretty well. I want Sylvia to finally have that season we know he's all capable of, I want Watts to rip a couple of games apart and just generally become more confident in himself and, further to that, I'd really like to see Morton come on in 2011, as he has all the talent in the world, he just needs to channel it and show some more determination to succeed on the field.

Finally, I think the ruck is another area where we need to see someone step up. From what I've heard, Spencer is impressing so far this pre-season, so maybe he'll be the man for the job when you consider that Gawn and Fitz are probably still too young to compete effectively at AFL level. Whatever the case may be, I think this is an important area for improvement next season.
 
10 wins is a minimum. But it's very achievable for our developing side.

Spirit of 39 & sivart youre spot on - ignore those morons. Good thread too PM.

A pass mark would be an improvement on last years ladder position and more particularly, number of wins. We should be categorically targeting 7th or 8th spot, but theres no point putting up such a hurdle for our young list - so that they 'fail' if we dont make finals.

As for players I would love to see improve the most Ive picked 3 guys that I think could make the biggest difference to our list if they step up another level;

Watts, Strauss & Bennell.

Others I wanted to mention were; Jones, Garland, Morton and Spencer, .

Not a troll, but I've got to say you do seem like a negative supporter. I think the Dee's will just make the 8 next year only because Richmond bewilderingly picked Brad Miller off the scrap heap. Now you have no inconsistent list cloggers left, and that means your younger kids will benefit and flourish over time.

It's a shame really because I like the Demons, and red and blue are my favourite colours.
 
Some good comments.

Just re finals, great if we get there and do something, but I don't see a lot of value in scraping into 7th or 8th, and then getting pummelled the first week by the eventual premiers.

But maybe that's just me.

I'm all up for getting some finals experience into our young list - not to mention the additional revenue.

I am surprised people are still all over Jack Watts. I expect no more from Watts than I do from any other player in the MFC.

He needs to continue to earn his spot and play good football.

As for a team pass mark I think it depends on the competition, sure finals are nice, but I'd rather finish 9th and be competitive with the top four teams every time we play them rather than finish 5th and get blown out of the water by the premiers.
